Synthesis, Characterization And Crystal Structures Of Platinum(Ii) Saccharinate Complexes With 1,5-Cyclooctadiene, Ceyda İçsel
Synthesis, Characterization And Crystal Structures Of Platinum(Ii) Saccharinate Complexes With 1,5-Cyclooctadiene, Ceyda İçsel
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Two new platinum(II) complexes, namely [PtCl(sac)(COD)] (1) and [Pt(sac)$_{2}$(COD)] (2) (sac $=$ saccharinate and COD $=$ 1,5-cyclooctadiene), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR, ESI-MS spectroscopic and thermal analysis (TG/DTA) methods. The platinum(II) complexes were prepared from the reaction of [PtCl$_{2}$(COD)] with Na(sac) • 2H$_{2}$O. The addition of the sac ligand resulted in the replacement of 1 and 2 chlorido ligands in [PtCl$_{2}$(COD)] to yield 1 and 2, respectively. The structures of the complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and showed a distorted square planar coordination geometry around platinum(II). COD acted as a $\pi $-donor ligand, …

Isothermal Compressibility And Isobaric Thermal Shrinkage Of A Porous $\Alpha$-Alumina Compact: Thermodynamic Calculations, Yüksel Sarikaya, Müşerref Önal, Abdullah Devri̇m Pekdemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Two methods were proposed to calculate the thermodynamic parameters of porous ceramic compacts depending on their molar volume change with applied pressure and heating temperature, respectively. Molar volume of the porous $\alpha $-alumina ($\alpha $-Al$_{2}$O$_{3})$ compact was evaluated according to literature depending on both the applied pressure at room temperature and the heating temperature at atmospheric pressure. The isothermal compressibility coefficient, Gibbs energy, and work done on the compact by compression were calculated. The thermal shrinkage coefficient and activation energy as well as the change in enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy were calculated for partial sintering. The spontaneous nature of …
Electrolytic Oxidative Coupling Of Alcohols With Aldehydes To Form Esters, Katherine L. Verboom
Electrolytic Oxidative Coupling Of Alcohols With Aldehydes To Form Esters, Katherine L. Verboom
Honors College Theses
There are copious amounts of naturally occurring and synthetic esters known that have a wide range of applications in industry to produce fine chemicals. Traditional methods of ester synthesis involve a reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol in the presence of a Bronsted acid catalyst. The primary objective of this research project was to carry out the ester synthesis using the electrochemical coupling of aldehydes with alcohols instead of with a Bronsted acid catalyst because the electrochemical coupling would be an all-around better alternative of ester synthesis than the traditional method of using the catalyst. Electrochemistry has long …

Understanding the atomistic origin of defects in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, their impact on the electronic properties, and how to control them is critical for future electronics and optoelectronics. Here, we demonstrate the integration of thermochemical scanning probe lithography (tc-SPL) with a flow-through reactive gas cell to achieve nanoscale control of defects in monolayer MoS2. The tc-SPL produced defects can present either p- or n-type doping on demand, depending on the used gasses, allowing the realization of field effect transistors, and p-n junctions with precise sub-μm spatial control, and a rectification ratio of over 104. Doping …
Antioxidant Intervention In Radical-Induced Protein Damage, Emmanuel Zubia
Antioxidant Intervention In Radical-Induced Protein Damage, Emmanuel Zubia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Many environmental toxicants are known to increase free-radical production, which can create cellular havoc and lead to a myriad of ailments. Antioxidants can be used to ameliorate the prevalence of free radicals, potentially serving as prophylactics against radical-induced disorders. Many exogenous antioxidants are phytochemicals in origin, such as ascorbic acid, gallic acid, and ellagic acid. Some of these antioxidants can be found in traditional medicine, like tanshinone and brazilin, which have been studied and are known to have low cytotoxicity. Here we test the radical rescue capacity of a selected group of phytochemical antioxidants on protein rescue models. Specifically, our …

From September 2012 to May 2015, a phenocam monitored the seaward edge of a protected mangrove forest. Calculated GCC revealed seasonal greening patterns of a mangrove species, Rhizophoa apiculata, and an overall increase in the GCC, suggesting mangrove expansion. In comparing temperature and precipitation effects, it was found that this particular mangrove species had a greening optima at temperatures between 28°C and 28.5°C, and greening and canopy development response lag time of 10 weeks in response to precipitation. Tree saplings were monitored and showed to grow by 50%, mostly during a three month period during the rainy season. The establishment …

Spectroscopic Techniques To Characterize And Develop Sensing Methods For Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles In Water, Reagan Scott Turley
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are being used in ever increasing amounts and applications in many consumer products and industrial processes including water treatment. These nanoparticles have not been shown to be toxic to humans via ingestion, but it is worthwhile to develop a portable and rapid detection method to quantify the concentration of nanoparticles in treated drinking water. Current detection methods include single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, tunneling electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. While extremely sensitive, these techniques are expensive and sometimes require extensive sample preparation before analysis. A preliminary study on …

Synthesis Of Nanotemplated, Glucose-Derived Adsorbents For The Removal Of Organic And Inorganic Pollutants From Water, Luis Alfonso Barrera
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
With an ever-present rise in population, along with an increase in industrial and manufacturing plants, contamination of potable water has become a global concern. While water treatment facilities exist which can help with the purification of water from bacterial and organic contaminants, these facilities are expensive to set in place and maintain. Therefore, in impoverished areas, point of use (POU) purification systems are often preferred, such as filters made from activated carbon. These filters are inexpensive and relatively easy to install and use. However, while activated carbons generally display excellent adsorption capabilities towards organic contaminants, their adsorption towards inorganic pollutants …

Method Development For The Analysis Of Fatty Acids In Adipose Tissue Using Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction Coupled With Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Angela Marisol Encerrado Manriquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The project was aimed to develop an easy and sensitive analytical tool to study the role of fatty acids (FAs) profile in periprostatic adipose tissue (PPAT) and prostate cancer (PCa). PCa is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among American men. Although obesity has been mostly ruled out by many researchers as a risk factor for developing PCa, it has shown to be associated with PCa metastasis and progression. Periprostatic adipose tissue, which was present on 48% of prostatic surfaces, has been reported to act as energy sources for facilitating a positive microenvironment for PCa tumor progression. To understand …

Some Fermi-Lowdin Orbital Self-Interaction Correction Studies On Atomic Systems, Christopher Alexis Ibarra
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Density Function Theory (DFT) is a popular quantum chemistry calculation method with many appeals but also deficiencies. Many modification and additions to the method have been made over the years, such as self-interaction corrections and new density functional approximations. We review here the theoretical background needed for a basic understanding of quantum chemistry calculations. In addition, we present the quantum chemistry calculation method used in this paper called Fermi-Lowdin Self-Interaction Correction (FLOSIC), including the base code it was implemented on, the Naval Research Laboratory Molecular Orbital Library (NRLMOL) Code, and the resulting modified code simply called FLOSIC. Furthermore, we explore …
Life Cycle Studies To Evaluate The Physiological And Biochemical Effects Of Copper Oxide And Surface-Coated Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles On Green Onion (Allium Fistulosum) And Carrot (Daucus Carota L.) Plants: Insights Utilizing Two-Photon Microscopy And Spectroscopy, Yi Wang
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
With the recent increase of nanomaterial production, nano copper oxide (nCuO) and surface-modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) are among the most widely applied nanoparticles in industry and daily lives. Their use has resulted in accumulation in soils as a consequence of their direct or indirect release. Hence, these NPs may raise a potential risk to crops cultivated in soils. Moreover, the physiological effects of nCuO on green onion (Allium fistulosum) and surface-coated nTiO2 on full-grown carrot (Daucus carota L.) are still unknown. Green onion is characterized by its high content of the antioxidant allicin, and carrot is a worldwide economic …

Discovery Of Glycan-Based Biomarkers For Cutaneous Leishmaniasis And Chagas Disease By Reversed Immunoglycomics, Alba Lucia Montoya
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Protozoa are the causative agents of a number of diseases that affect humans and mammalian animals. Several forms of leishmaniasis are caused by different Leishmania species (Leishmania spp.), while Chagas disease (CD) is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). These members of the Trypanosomatidae family have characteristic glycoconjugates broadly distributed on their cell surfaces, which can be useful for diagnosis and follow-up of chemotherapy for the diseases.
Leishmania spp. expresses an “exotic” surface glycocalyx mainly composed of a number of glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins, a complex lipophosphoglycan (LPG) and a family of low-molecular mass glycoinositol-phospholipids (GIPLs), some of them …

Vehicle hydrocarbon (HC) emissions can be emitted from either tailpipe or non-tailpipe locations and understanding their fleet apportionment is important for successful air pollution policy. Vehicles initially misidentified as having elevated tailpipe HC emissions first indicated that roadside exhaust sensors could detect the presence of evaporative HC emissions as increased noise in the HC/carbon dioxide (CO2) correlation measurement. The 90th percentile of the largest residual of the HC/CO2 correlation is defined as a running loss index (RLI) for each measurement. An RLI that is three standard deviations or greater above the instruments noise indicates possible evaporative …

Binge drinking is a dangerous pattern of behavior. We tested whether chronically manipulating nucleus accumbens (NAc) activity (via clozapine-N-oxide (CNO) and Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADD)) could produce lasting eects on ethanol binge-like drinking in mice selectively bred to drink to intoxication. We found chronically increasing NAc activity (4 weeks, via CNO and the excitatory DREADD, hM3Dq) decreased binge-like drinking, but did not observe CNO-induced changes in drinking with the inhibitory DREADD, hM4Di. The CNO/hM3Dq-induced reduction in ethanol drinking persisted for at least one week, suggesting adaptive neuroplasticity via transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms. Therefore, we defined this …

Transient, acutely toxic concentrations of pesticides in streams can go undetected by fixed-interval sampling programs. Here we compare temporal patterns in occurrence of current-use pesticides in daily composite samples to those in weekly composite and weekly discrete samples of surface water from 14 small stream sites. Samples were collected over 10–14 weeks at 7 stream sites in each of the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. Samples were analyzed for over 200 pesticides and degradates by direct aqueous injection liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Nearly 2 and 3 times as many unique pesticides were detected in daily samples as in …

A Simple Predictive Model For Estimating Relative E-Cigarette Toxic Carbonyl Levels, Shawna Vreeke, Xijing Zhu, Robert Strongin
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
E-cigarette devices are wide ranging, leading to significant differences in levels of toxic carbonyls in their respective aerosols. Power can be a useful method in predicting relative toxin concentrations within the same device, but does not correlate well to inter-device levels. Herein, we have developed a simple mathematical model utilizing parameters of an e-cigarette’s coil and wick in order to predict relative levels of e-liquid solvent degradation. Model 1, which is coil length/(wick surface area*wraps), performed in the moderate-to-substantial range as a predictive tool (R2 = 0.69). Twelve devices, spanning a range of coil and wick styles, were analyzed. Model …

X-ray radiotherapy is a common method of treating cancerous tumors or other malignant lesions. The side effects of this treatment, however, can be deleterious to patient quality of life if critical tissues are affected. To potentially lower the effective doses of radiation and negative side-effects, new classes of nanoparticles are being developed to enhance reactive oxygen species production during irradiation. This report presents the synthesis and radiotherapeutic efficacy evaluation of a new nanoparticle formulation designed for this purpose, composed of a CaF2 core, mesoporous silica shell, and polyethylene glycol coating. The construct was additionally doped with Tb and Eu …

Use Of Confocal Raman Microscopy To Characterise Ethyl Cyanoacrylate Adhesive Depth Curing, Kevin Raheem, John Cassidy, Tony Betts, Bernard Ryan
Articles
In situ spatial temporal measurement of monomer conversion during adhesive bondline curing remains a challenging area. The aim of this work was to demonstrate the effectiveness of using confocal Raman microscopy in a specially configured experimental set-up, as a versatile tool for measuring monomer concentration changes as a function of both time and adhesive bond depth during ethyl cyanoacrylate polymerisation. This also allowed monitoring of the extent of polymerisation at the adhesive substrate interface independently of the bulk bondline polymerisation region. Key kinetic parameters such as inhibition time tlag, rate of reaction Rmax and extent of reaction [at]max were obtained …

Mitochondria Imaging And Targeted Cancer Treatment, Tinghan Zhao
Dissertations
Mitochondria are essential organelles as the site of respiration in eukaryotic cells and are involved in many crucial functions in cell life. Dysfunction of mitochondrial metabolism and irregular morphology have been frequently found in human cancers. The capability of imaging mitochondria as well as regulating their microenvironment is important both scientifically and clinically. Mitochondria penetrating peptides (MPPs), certain peptides that are composed of cationic and hydrophobic amino acids, are good candidates for mitochondria targeting. Herein, a novel MPP, D-argine-phenylalanine-D-argine-phenylalanine-D-argine-phenylalanine-NH2 (rFrFrF), is conjugated with a rhodamine-based fluorescent chromophore (TAMRA). The TAMRA-rFrFrF probe exhibits advantageous properties for long-term mitochondria tracking of …

As water scarcity increases globally under the stresses of increasing demand, aquifer depletion, and climate change, the market for efficient desalination technologies has grown rapidly to fill the void. One such developing technology, membrane distillation (MD), has found much interest in the scientific community. MD has also been powered by solar energy and waste heat resources because it can be operated at relatively low temperatures. Recent studies indicate that MD could potentially achieve the efficiencies of state-of-the-art mature thermal desalination technologies, although additional engineering and scientific challenges must first be overcome.
MD can be used to treat high salinity water …

In this work, hydrothermal reaction and high temperature were used to grow ZnCo2O4 active materials on Ni foam. The crystal stuctures and surface morphlogies of four samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrochemical performances were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) testing and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on an electrochemical station. It can be seen that active materials tended to form denser stuctures with an increasing amount of NH4F in the solution system and four different morphologies of ZnCo2 …

Electrochemical Preparation And Photocatalytic Performance Of Lanio3/Tio2 Nanotube Arrays, Cheng Gong, Ze-Yang Zhang, Si-Wan Xiang, Lan Sun, Chen-Qing Ye, Chang-Jian Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
The LaNiO3/TiO2 nanotube arrays were prepared by pulse electrodeposition combined with high temperature annealing. The LaNiO3 nanoparticles modified on the TiO2 nanotube arrays had small particle size (< 10 nm), uniform distribution and controllable loading. Some LaNiO3 nanoparticles were deposited inside the TiO2 nanotubes. The UV-visible absorption spectra displayed that the absorption band edge of LaNiO3/TiO2 nanotube arrays was obviously red-shifted as compared with that of TiO2 nanotube arrays, and the visible light absorption was enhanced significantly. The photocatalytic degradation results of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light showed that the LaNiO3/TiO2 nanotube arrays prepared …

Electrochemical Behaviors Of Azopurine On Gold Electrodes, Ming-Xue Li, Hang Shi, Jia Liu, Meng Zhang, Jian-Zhang Zhou, De-Yin Wu, Zhong-Qun Tian
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this paper, we studied the electrochemical behaviors of azopurine on polished gold electrodes with cyclic voltammetry (CV). On the basis of analyzing scan rate and peak current, it was supposed that the redox process belonged to a reversible process controlled by adsorption in 0.2 mol·L-1 PBS (pH = 4.0 ~ 10.0) solutions. The potentials of redox peaks moved more negatively with increasing pH value. This proved that the H+ proton has participcted in the electrochemical reaction. The further data analysis and the calculation of surface adsorption excess demonstrated that the reaction was a two-proton and two-electron process. …
