E-cigarette (e-cig) use is rising, but much is unknown about the effects of its vapor. This vapor contains chemicals such as propylene glycol, a known antimicrobial, and nicotine, whose derivatives are carcinogenic. Here, we study the effects of vaping on resident bacteria of the oral cavity and on oral cell inflammation. Oral streptococci are major residents in the oral cavity, with S. mutans the primary cause of dental caries. Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) is the current gold standard for diagnosing dental abscesses in the Emergency Department (ED). There are limitations to using CT, including high cost, radiation exposure, and lengthy time to diagnosis. Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is an alternative imaging modality that does not have these limitations, and is already used to diagnose other soft tissue abscesses. The efficacy of POCUS for diagnosing suspected dental abscesses has never been investigated. The purpose of this project is to compare the utility of POCUS to CT in diagnosing suspected dental abscesses in the ED.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and amount of Ca(OH)2 extrusion in relation to the intracanal delivery technique, apical foramen size, and depth of placement. Methods: Standardized training blocks with j-shaped canals were used (n=64); half of the simulated canals were shaped to apical size #35(.06 taper) and the remaining 32 to #45(.06). The frequency and extent of Ca(OH)2 extrusion were measured relative to apical taper, the depth of insertion, and whether syringe or spiral filler was used. In order to access articles published in conventional (non-open access) journals, scientists must utilize tools such as subscriptions, site licenses or pay-per-view charges. In contrast, open access articles can be accessed without financial, legal or technical barriers. A large-scale study estimated that at least 28% of the academic literature is open access (19 million in total) and that this percentage is growing.^[1] A recent survey showed an open access rate in field of dentistry at 45.8%.^[2] It has been demonstrated that open access articles had 8% to 40% higher citations compared to non-open access articles; this has been …

การศึกษานี้เป็นการศึกษาทางคลินิกแบบแบ่งส่วนช่องปากซึ่งมีการจัดกลุ่มด้วยวิธีสุ่มและมีกลุ่มควบคุม มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเปรียบเทียบการลุกลามของรอยผุด้านประชิดระยะแรกเริ่มในฟันหลังแท้ที่ระยะเวลา 6 เดือนภายหลังการทาฟลูออไรด์วาร์นิชและคาวิตี้วาร์นิช ในอาสาสมัครจำนวน 30 คนที่มีรอยผุด้านประชิดระยะแรกเริ่มที่ระดับความลึกไม่เกินรอยต่อเนื้อฟัน-เคลือบฟันอย่างน้อย 1 คู่ที่อยู่คนละจตุภาค ซึ่งไม่เป็นรูทางคลินิกและมีการดำเนินโรค อาสาสมัครได้รับการถ่ายภาพรังสีดิจิทัลชนิดกัดปีกที่ระยะเริ่มต้น รอยผุดังกล่าวได้รับการจัดกลุ่มโดยการสุ่มเพื่อทาฟลูออไรด์วาร์นิช หรือคาวิตี้วาร์นิช (กลุ่มควบคุม) อาสาสมัครได้รับการถ่ายภาพรังสีดิจิทัลชนิดกัดปีกอีกครั้งที่ระยะ 6 เดือน เพื่อติดตามการลุกลามของรอยผุ โดยใช้วิธีการวัดผล 2 วิธี ได้แก่ การวัดความหนาแน่นแร่ธาตุของรอยผุจากภาพรังสีซ้อนทับชนิดดิจิทัลระหว่างภาพรังสีที่ระยะเริ่มต้นกับที่ระยะ 6 เดือน และการวัดความลึกรอยผุโดยตรงจากภาพรังสีดิจิทัลชนิดกัดปีกที่ระยะเริ่มต้นและที่ระยะ 6 เดือนด้วยโปรแกรม Image-Pro Plus พบว่าค่าเฉลี่ยความหนาแน่นแร่ธาตุระหว่างรอยผุด้านประชิดระยะแรกเริ่มกลุ่มที่ได้รับการทาฟลูออไรด์วาร์นิช (125.38 ± 6.9) และคาวิตี้วาร์นิช (132.63 ± 8.59) มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (p=0.001) เมื่อใช้สถิติ paired-T test ตรงข้ามกับค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างความลึกรอยผุกลุ่มที่ได้รับการทาฟลูออไรด์วาร์นิช (-0.0078 ± 0.13) และคาวิตี้วาร์นิช (-0.0227 ± 0.11) ที่ไม่พบว่ามีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (p=0.525) เมื่อใช้สถิติ paired-T test ดังนั้นจึงยังไม่สามารถสรุปผลของฟลูออไรด์วาร์นิชต่อการลุกลามของรอยผุด้านประชิดระยะแรกเริ่มในฟันหลังแท้ได้ และควรมีการศึกษาเพิ่มเติมในระยะยาวต่อไป

Periodontal disease is a bacterial induced chronic inflammatory condition that occurs in a susceptible host, affecting the teeth, gingiva, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. The resultant pathological bone defects often require surgical intervention, with the ultimate goal being regeneration of the periodontium through the application of grafting materials and biologics. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) show great potential in regenerative medicine for their ability to enhance cell proliferation and differentiation, increase angiogenesis, and modulate the immune response. Purpose: To determine how endodontic practitioners are currently managing cases of invasive cervical resorption. Also, to analyze how invasive cervical resorption (ICR) has been managed at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) over the past ten years.

Methods: Both domestic and international endodontists were invited to participate in a 14-question survey developed and administered via REDCap. Survey invitations were sent via email to currently practicing endodontists. Electronic dental records were queried for patients diagnosed with ICR at VCU in the preceding ten years. Streptococcus sanguinis is primarily associated with oral health as a commensal bacterium. As an opportunistic pathogen, S. sanguinis is capable of colonizing heart valve vegetations, leading to the disease infective endocarditis. Previous studies from our lab have identified the high-affinity manganese transporter SsaACB as important for endocarditis virulence. The impact that manganese depletion has on S. sanguinis had never been evaluated and a secondary manganese transporter has not been identified. This study demonstrates the efficacy of Raman micro-spectroscopy of oral cytological samples for differentiating dysplastic, potentially malignant lesions from those of normal, healthy donors. Cells were collected using brush biopsy from healthy donors (n = 20) and patients attending a Dysplasia Clinic (n = 20). Donors were sampled at four different sites (buccal mucosa, tongue, alveolus, gingiva), to ensure matched normal sites for all lesions, while patient samples were taken from clinically evident, histologically verified dysplastic lesions. Field cancerisation (FC) is potentially an underlying cause of poor treatment outcomes of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). To explore the phenomenon using Raman microspectroscopy, brush biopsies from the buccal mucosa, tongue, gingiva and alveolus of healthy donors (n = 40) and from potentially malignant lesions (PML) of Dysplasia Clinic patients (n = 40) were examined. Contralateral normal samples (n = 38) were also collected from the patients. Raman spectra were acquired from the nucleus and cytoplasm of each cell, and subjected to partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). This study sought to understand how patients’ perceptions of the nature and manner of communication with dental health professionals may impact their health self-management quality and habits in the context of preventable illness. Specifically, this study investigated the distinct and overlapping impacts of (a) communication based in the Common Sense Self-Regulation Model (CSM; Leventhal et al., 1980), and (b) the interpersonal relationship between the patient and the dental health professional provider on patients’ oral hygiene quality and habits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment and storage time on immediate repair bond durability of methacrylate- and ormocer-based bulk fill composites. In total, 265 discs were divided into 32 groups (n = 8/group) according to: (1) Material: X-tra fil and Admira Fusion X-tra; (2) Surface treatment: oxygen inhibition; matrix; Futurabond M+; Silane/Futurabond M+; Admira Bond; Silane/Admira Bond; ceramic repair system; and Silane/Cimara bond; and (3) Storage time: 24 h and 6 months.
