Background: Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) provide a versatile means by which orthodontic anchorage can be established without the need for patient compliance and complex force systems. Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement requires the precise coordination of a multitude of biological factors in order for proper bone remodeling to occur. Cytokines, such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), play a critical role in the communication necessary for both bone resorption and bone apposition. IL-6 reacts with receptor proteins, such as soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R), on target cells in order to transmit signals important to both osteoclast and osteoblast activities. Domestic violence has been recognized as one of our nation's most serious public health issues. Domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and sometimes death. Dentists can act as one of the first lines of intervention in recognizing common dental and facial trauma which may be associated with domestic violence victims including: broken teeth, facial bruising, and jaw fractures.

In recent studies, periodontal health has been linked to being overweight and/or obese. Among common oral bacteria, Selenomonas noxia has been implicated in converting periodontal health to disease. Selenomonas spp. have also been found in gastric ulcers, and were misdiagnosed as Helicobacter -like organisms, but no further studies were conducted. The increasing clinical and epidemiological importance of S. noxia necessitates the development of a rapid detection method. Retention is required in the majority of orthodontic patients throughout the remainder of their life. The two primary removable appliances are known as the traditional Hawley retainer or the vacuum formed retainer. These appliances were developed to maintain the position of the dentition without sacrificing oral health. The orthodontic population is at a higher risk for caries due to plaque accumulation from poor diet, suboptimal oral hygiene and often lack of motivation. Fixed orthodontic appliances (braces) are one of the most widely used appliances to correct malocclusion, however many patients prefer less metal display. To meet this demand more esthetically pleasing brackets and archwires have been developed. These esthetic components are often clear, white or tooth colored. Coatings of various types are commonly used to produce an esthetic archwire. However, these coating materials tend to wear and degrade, which may cause binding and increased resistance to friction, thereby potentially reducing the efficiency of tooth movement. Introduction.

The purpose of this study was to compare perceptions of efficacy and efficiency of Self-Ligating Brackets vs. conventional brackets between practicing Orthodontists and Orthodontic Residents.

Methods.

Cross-sectional survey research using a three-wave emailing of addresses from the current American Association of Orthodontists directory. The directors of all orthodontic residency programs in the US were asked to also distribute to all residents. The survey included five sections: (1) respondents' experience, (2) factors that influence, (3) positive or negative factors, (4) the perceived efficiency/efficacy, and (5) demographics. A 39% response rate (N=707) was obtained.

Design

A randomised, parallel-group, controlled clinical trial.

Intervention

The test group had fluoride varnish applied onto the tooth surfaces with WSLs using a miniature cotton swab or brush and advised not to brush for four hours. The control group had saline solution applied.

Outcome measure

Status of the WSLs were assessed using a DIAGNOdent pen (KaVo, Biberach, Germany).

The purpose of this study is to determine if the service-learning aspect of Marquette’s dental education enhances the dental students’ knowledge of the barriers to access to dental care for underserved populations. The goal of this study is to obtain feedback about service-learning in the MUSoD curriculum and disseminate the findings to others who teach service-learning in dental school curricula. MUSoD students have the opportunity to participate in multiple diverse outreach experiences throughout their four years of Dental School. An in vitro model of bacterial biofilms on rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (RGPLs) was developed to challenge oral epithelial cells. This novel model provided seminal data on oral biofilm-host cell interactions, and with selected bacteria, the biofilms were more effective than their planktonic counterparts at stimulating host cell responses.

Staff meetings in general dental practices represent what is believed to be a key management strategy to build teams and to enhance ef-ficiency and effectiveness. However, very little research has been done regarding staff meetings in dental offices. This study examined staff meetings from the viewpoint of dental hygienists who grow in unique careers in that they work largely independently of the dentist and yet typically within a dental practice while providing patient care and education. Low temperature atmospheric pressure plasma (LT APP) is a novel science being studied as an alternative light source to enhance tooth whitening. The safety and effectiveness of LTAPP has not been established therefore; the purpose of this study was to determine if LTAPP along with H₂O₂ gel would safely and effectively accelerate the tooth whitening process, in terms of lightness and temperature. Nash recounts the emergence of his personal and professional interest in ethics using the structure of Daniel Levinson's book The Seasons of a Man's Life. วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาโดยการสอนของนักศึกษา ทันตแพทย์ และการใช้สื่อโสตทัศน์ในนักเรียนชั้นประถมศึกษา วัสดุและวิธีการ เด็กนักเรียนจํานวน 160 คน อายุ 10-12 ปี โรงเรียนสาธิตมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น จังหวัดขอนแก่น โดยสุ่มแบบแบ่งชั้น ตามเพศ ระดับชั้นเรียน และผลการเรียนเฉลี่ย แบ่งเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา กลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ การประเมิน ประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันโดยทดสอบความรู้และวัดค่าดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังให้ทันตสุขศึกษา โดยวิเคราะห์ค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างคะแนนความรู้และค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา ในกลุ่มศึกษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่ม ด้วยสถิติทดสอบการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนทางเดียวที่ระดับความเชื่อมั่นร้อยละ 95 ผลการศึกษา ภายหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาพบว่าค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างคะแนนความรู้และค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาในกลุ่มศึกษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่ม มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < 0.01, p < 0.01 ตามลําดับ) โดยพบว่ากลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษามีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ กับกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา และพบว่าในระหว่างกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ สรุป การเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ในนักเรียนประถมศึกษาพบว่าไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติทั้งในด้านความรู้และค่าดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ ดังนั้นอาจจะนําเอาสื่อโสตทัศน์ไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาแทนทันตบุคลากรได้ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:187-92)

วัตถุประสงค์ นําเสนอและประเมินผลการทํางานของซอฟต์แวร์คอมพิวเตอร์ที่พัฒนาขึ้นเพื่อใช้ตกแต่งภาพฟัน และทํานายผลที่จะได้รับจากการบูรณะฟันโดยใช้การคํานวณหาขนาดและสัดส่วนของฟันหน้าบนจากจุดอ้างอิงทางกายวิภาคบนใบหน้าของผู้ป่วยเอง วัสดุและวิธีการ ประยุกต์ทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการคํานวณขนาดฟันตัดกลางบน และทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการแบ่งส่วนภาพฟันเพื่อใช้ในการแก้ไขปรับปรุงรูปดิจิทัลของฟัน มาเป็นหลักในการเขียนซอฟต์แวร์ในงานทันตกรรม จากนั้นได้ ทดลองใช้งานและประเมินผลในผู้ป่วยกลุ่มหนึ่ง ผลการศึกษา ซอฟต์แวร์สามารถคํานวณขนาดและสัดส่วนของฟันหน้าบนโดยใช้ข้อมูลจากจุดอ้างอิงบนใบหน้าได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพและสามารถสร้างภาพฟันให้มีขนาดและสัดส่วนตามที่คํานวณได้ อีกทั้งยังสามารถทําการ เปลี่ยนแปลงขนาดและสัดส่วนของภาพฟัน รวมทั้งตัดและเคลื่อนที่ภาพฟันจากตําแหน่งเดิมได้ หลังการตกแต่งภาพที่ได้สูญเสียความคมชัดและจําเป็นต้องมีการปรับปรุงคุณภาพของภาพให้ดีขึ้นด้วยกรรมวิธีการประมวลผลภาพ เมื่อทดลองใช้กับกลุ่มตัวอย่างพบว่าซอฟต์แวร์นี้สามารถช่วยในการสื่อสารระหว่างผู้ป่วยและทันตแพทย์ได้ดีขึ้น สรุป ซอฟต์แวร์ที่พัฒนาขึ้นสามารถใช้ในการคํานวณขนาดซี่ฟัน ตกแต่งและปรับปรุงคุณภาพ ภาพจําลองฟันซึ่งมีประโยชน์อย่างมากในการช่วยทันตแพทย์วางแผนการรักษาทางทันตกรรมและช่วยให้เห็นภาพจริงสําหรับใช้ในการสื่อสารกับผู้ป่วยก่อนการรักษาจริง (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:155-68)

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลของการใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้ากับแปรงสีฟันธรรมดาในการลดการเกิด เหงือกอักเสบและกําจัดคราบจุลินทรีย์ในช่วงระยะเวลา 3 เดือน วัสดุและวิธีการ ทําการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบกลุ่มควบคุมแบบสุ่มในเด็กนักเรียนประถมศึกษา อายุระหว่าง 7-10 ปี จํานวน 70 คน แบ่งเด็กออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มทดลองและกลุ่มควบคุม กลุ่มละเท่า ๆ กัน โดยการสุ่มแบบแบ่ง ชั้นตามระดับชั้นเรียนและเพศ กําหนดให้เด็กในกลุ่มทดลองใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้าชนิดการเคลื่อนที่แบบสั่นและหมุน และกลุ่มควบคุมใช้แปรงสีฟันธรรมดา วัดดัชนีเหงือกอักเสบของ Lie และ Silness และดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์พีเอชพี ของ Podshadley และ Haley ที่เริ่มต้นศึกษาและวัดซ้ําทุกเดือนเป็นระยะเวลา 3 เดือน ทดสอบความแตกต่าง ของค่าเฉลี่ยระหว่างกลุ่มทดลองและกลุ่มควบคุม โดยใช้สถิติการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนเมื่อมีการวัดที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ 0.05 ผลการศึกษา เมื่อเวลา 3 เดือนพบว่า ค่าเฉลี่ยการลดลงของดัชนีเหงือกอักเสบจากค่าพื้นฐานระหว่างกลุ่ม ทดลองกับกลุ่มควบคุมไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p = 0.19) สําหรับค่าเฉลี่ยการลดลงของดัชนี คราบจุลินทรีย์จากค่าพื้นฐานระหว่างกลุ่มทดลองกับกลุ่มควบคุมพบว่า ไม่มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญ ทางสถิติ (p = 0.73) เช่นเดียวกัน สรุป ประสิทธิผลในการลดการเกิดเหงือกอักเสบและกําจัดคราบจุลินทรีย์ของการใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้าไม่แตกต่างจากแปรงสีฟันธรรมดาที่ช่วงเวลา 3 เดือน (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:193-202)
