A case report is presented with a 32-year-old female patient who had received bilateral posterior segmental ostectomy of maxilla to create inter-occlusal space for mandibular removable partial denture 4 years before orthodontic first visit. She came for treatment with a chief complaint of maxillary protrusion. The patient presented skeletal Class II malocclusion with maxillary anterior vertical excess, occlusal plane cant with severe vertical discrepancy of maxillary arch , multiple missing teeth, as well as ill-fitted fixed partial dentures. Cleidocranio-dysplasia is an autosomal dominant disease. RUNX2(CBFA1) is the only gene known to be associated with CCD. The clinical characteristic of skeletal dysplasia including delayed or ectopic eruption of permanent teeth, multiple supernumanary teeth, delayed resorption of primary root, dilacerations of permanent and supernumanary teeth, malocclusion with skeletal discrepancy. Diagnosis of CCD in dental clinic due to oral phenomenens happened usually. This paper would systemically reviewed the genetic and pathological mechanism of CCD.

The mandibular condyle has a multi-directional growth capacity due to the fact that cells deeply located in the fibrous covering is a prechondroblastic zone which undergoing continued proliferation during active growth. The whole histogenetic process allows for the ramus to lengthen in a pressure site. The adaptive nature of the condylar growth is the main source in scientific validation of functional orthopedic concept and therapy. A case of mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry was presented. Surgery-first orthognathic approach was performed that no pre-surgical orthodontic treatment was done before surgery. Within this treatment modality, patient had major profile improvement in the beginning of the treatment and total treatment time was shortened. The etiology of mandibular deviation, treatment principles of facial asymmetry, and the advantages of surgery-first orthognathic approach were discussed.

A case report was presented with a female patient of class II malocclusion,bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion with space deficiency. Bilateral lower left second molars were mesially inclined impactions with large caries. The lower left second molar was diagnosed with acute apical periodontitis. Restoration of severely damaged anterior tooth requires comprehensive evaluation and carefully treatment plan making. A case of inadequade supra-gingival tooth structure of maxillary central incisor which needs restoration was presented. Forced eruption was used to lengthen the clinical crown, and adjust the gingival level. Then full ceramic crowns were restored for esthetic demands of the patient. Evaluation, treatment plan consideration, and overview of the forced eruption was provided.

Clinical Managements For Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisors – Literature Review, Chih-Yu Lin, Li-Hsiang Lin

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

The etiology of missing maxillary lateral incisors may include congenital missing ones, and previous extractions due to traumatic injury or large dental caries. Spacing and malocclusions following missing maxillary lateral incisors often result in significant impacts on facial esthetics and oral function. To treat these patients, there are orthodontic alternatives to choose from: (1) canine substitution, (2) autotransplantation, (3) conventional prosthetic restorations, and (4) single implants. The aim of this article is to review the prevalence of congenital missing maxillary lateral incisors, and the above-mentioned treatment options for managing missing maxillary lateral incisors.

Current cephalometry in dentistry relies on plain lateral films to evaluate craniofacial structure of patients. This concept is based on 2D images which are difficult to apply in complicated craniofacial structures. The purpose of this study is to develop a 3D cephalometric analysis by reconstructing the 3D-CT skull images, which provides landmark identification and Downs analysis in the 3D software. The case report is presented on an adult patient who had surgical-orthodontic treatment to solve her skeletal Class III malocclusion with mandible deviation. Conventional approach of surgical-orthodontic therapy requires a varied period of pre-surgical orthodontic treatment, the most important work to do is dental decompensation. The case was treated by surgical-first approach with minimal pre-surgical orthodontics, i.e. most of the detail orthodontic works (leveling, alignment and interdigitation) were done after orthognathic surgery. The total treatment time was 12 months. The facial symmetry and optimal occlusion were achieved.

The orthodontic specialty developed more than twenty five years in Taiwan. The orthodontic assistant system and its training are still not formed. The orthodontist’s clinical management and assistant interrelationship is less reported. The purpose of this study was to investigate the assistant role in orthodontic clinic. Totally one hundred and thirty two clinics were investigated. The assistant works and its correlated issue were calculated. The results showed most orthodontists allowed assistant works are including X ray taking, impression taking and oral hygiene education. Although the incidence of impaction of the upper central incisor is not so frequent, with about 0.06% to 0.2% incidence rate, the occlusal relationship and symmetric esthetics of upper anterior dentition are obviously affected. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the changes in morphology of mandibular symphysis in Class III malocclusion after pre-surgical dental decompensation. Thirteen patients underwent orthognathic surgery to correct Class III skeletal and dental malocclusions. The dental decompensation was indicated for these patients to gain greater setback amount of bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy. The morphology was assessed through lateral cephalograms obtained initially and preoperatively. After pre-surgical dental decompensation, the sagittal discrepancies were maintained. An alternative surgical treatment plan was presented to show how to efficiently correct mandibular prognathism without large overjet discrepancy presented. The protrusive chin was eliminated through clockwise rotation of the occlusal plane and maxillo-mandibular complex. Within this method, no complicated orthodontic treatment was needed and the total treatment time was therefore shortened. The smiling arc was also improved. The etiology of anterior cross-bite is multi-factor and the advocated treatment options were abundant. Early orthodontic treatments including chin-cap, face mask and palatal expansion have been recommended by many scholars. But some other clinicians would delay the orthodontic treatment combined with orthognathic surgery for Class III cases till the completion of growth, if there were no obvious detriment to patients’ oral function or psychological impact to their social life. The orthodontic treatment philosophy and strategy toward patients with different vertical facial pattern such as open bite or deep bite, long face or short face, are usually different. The relationship between facial morphology in vertical dimension and masticatory musculature are always interested by orthodontists. However, the cause and effect relationship between muscle function and facial morphology is still inconclusive. Tipped molar is a relatively common occurrence in adult dentition. The objective in orthodontic molar uprighting is ideal positioning of the molar which will eventually become an abutment tooth for a fixed prothesis. The ideal position will improve the periodontal environment for the molar. The benefits provided by molar uprignting are: abutment preparations are simplified; pontic design is improved; reduced mesial periodontal infra-bony defect and so on. (1) Background: Painful nervus intermedius neuropathy involves continuous or near-continuous pain affecting the distribution of the intermedius nerve(s). The diagnosis of this entity is challenging, particularly when the clinical and demographic features do not resemble the typical presentation of this condition. To the best of our knowledge, only three case reports have described the occurrence of nervus intermedius neuropathy in young patients. A survey of dental hygienists in general practice (DHGP; n = 74) and periodontal practice (DHPP; n = 62) indicated a difference (p £ 0.04) in preference for interproximal cleaning with oral irrigators (DHGP) and interproximal brushes (DHPP) during periodontal maintenance therapy (PMT). The purpose of the subsequent blinded, randomized controlled clinical trial was to compare the effect of interproximal cleaning aids on reducing inflammation in posterior pockets during PMT. This study aimed to evaluate the use of bioengineering tools, finite element analysis, strain gauge analysis, photoelastic analysis, and digital image correlation, in computational studies with greater validity and reproducibility. A bibliographic search was performed in the main health databases PUBMED and Scholar Google, in which different studies, among them, laboratory studies, case reports, systematic reviews, and literature reviews, which were developed in living individuals, were included. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of thermomechanical cycling (TMC) and type of abutment on the misfit and compressive strength of the implant−abutment interface. Forty 3.75-mm external hexagon implants with 25° angled abutments were divided into four groups (N = 10). Group A: overcast plus TMC; Group B: overcast without TMC; Group C: completely cast plus TMC; Group D: completely cast without TMC. Abutments were fixed to the implants with 32-Ncm torque, and groups A and C specimens were cyclically loaded at 80 N with 2 Hz for 1 million cycles.
