It is predicted that cigarette smokers and users of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have poor periodontal health and greater levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-15 and IL-18 in their saliva, compared to nonusers. Electronic cigarettes heat the liquid within the cartridge at a level that permits the individual to inhale. The inhalation within the lungs leads to tooth decay, gum disease and even oral cancer. The studies included in this review revealed that e-cigarette users had a higher risk of periodontal disease, tooth loss, and bone loss. Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disease affecting the body’s ability to produce the hormone insulin. The comparison between diabetic patients who received periodontal therapy, as opposed to those who have not, is explored in this report. Factors such as clinical attachment loss, probing depths, and effectiveness of periodontal therapy are measured. Recognizing the study's limitations, we conclude that non-surgical periodontal treatment on diabetic patients with periodontitis is shown to be clinically significant.

Opioid addiction in this nation is an extremely prevalent public health crisis. The same can be said about dental caries and other oral health conditions. Research shows that opioid addiction and dental caries have a strong correlation, even former opioid addicts are more likely to have caries. The studies reviewed for this paper include an Iranian study, one on the effects of use during pregnancy, a systematic review and the inequities among various marginalized groups. There is a direct correlation between patients with periodontal disease and negative cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease. Research has proven that those who suffer from Alzheimer’s/dementia have a reduced dentition which negatively impacts masticatory function. With impaired masticatory function, it leads to poor nutrition which has a direct effect on cerebral stimulation and blood flow which worsens the effects of Alzheimer’s. The bacteria that is present during periodontitis, causes a spike in inflammatory cytokines. These cytokines invade the brain and trigger CNS inflammation which leads to cognitive decline.

Incorporating referral incentives in dentistry, like gift cards or raffles, can present ethical and legal issues. The MDA's ethical rule 4.E prohibits rebates or fee splitting, extending to any referral source, including patients. Gift cards may be perceived as rebates. Raffle tickets are less problematic, but only the winner gains something of value. State law (MCL 333.16221) deems fee division unethical. For insurance and dental plan agreements, check for clauses mandating specific fee schedules and discouraging referral fees to ensure compliance. Federal laws might also apply if incentives are used for Medicaid or Medicare patients.

The Michigan Board of Dentistry has introduced changes to the rules governing the delegation of duties to dental auxiliaries, including the reclassification of "dental assistants" (those not formally trained or licensed) as "unregistered dental auxiliaries" (UDAs). The classification Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) remains. Changes involve the supervision levels for specific tasks and guiding training UDAs for orthodontic duties. Adenoid ameloblastoma with dentinoid (AAD) is a rare benign neoplasm of odontogenic epithelium, with under 50 cases having been reported in the literature. AAD shares histopathological characteristics with both ameloblastomas and adenomatoid odontogenic tumors. They are unique because of dentinoid deposition without enamel. We present a case of AAD in the maxilla of a 13 year old. The patient was treated with left infrastructure maxillectomy and left partial infratemporal fossa dissection. This case reports on an extremely rare disease process in an uncommon location in a pediatric patient.

Mda Foundation: Mda Foundation Teams Up With Victors For Veterans Program, Anne Berquist

The MDA Foundation partners with the Victors for Veterans (V4V) program to provide dental care to impoverished veterans in Michigan, especially those with disabilities, homelessness, or limited income. The program, established in 2012, currently operates in the VINA Community Dental Center in Brighton, Michigan, providing free dental services to veterans in the region. The MDA Foundation supports this initiative with grants to secure clinic space, enabling 30 to 60 veterans to receive comprehensive dental care annually. Dental students at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry volunteer their time and skills and precept dentists oversee patient care.

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is achieved by the simultaneous activation of bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. When orthodontic forces are applied, osteoclast-mediated bone resorption occurs in the alveolar bone on the compression side, creating space for tooth movement. Therefore, controlling osteoclastogenesis is the fundamental tenet of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic forces are sensed by osteoblast lineage cells such as periodontal ligament (PDL) cells and osteocytes. Of several cytokines produced by these cells, the most important cytokine promoting osteoclastogenesis is the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), which is mainly supplied by osteoblasts. Objective: To investigate the effects of the anticonvulsant valproic acid (VPA) on salivary glands in male rat using biochemical, functional, histomorphometric, and redox state parameters.

Materials and methods: Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into three groups (n = 8 per group): Control (0.9% saline solution), VPA100 (100 mg/kg), and VPA400 (400 mg/kg). After 21 consecutive days of treatment with by intragastric gavage. Pilocarpine-induced saliva was collected to determine salivary flow rate, pH, buffering capacity, and biochemical composition. Analyses of histomorphometric parameters and redox balance markers were performed on the parotid and submandibular glands.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is associated with osteoporosis and fractures. Etelcalcetide is an intravenous calcimimetic for the control of hyperparathyroidism in patients on hemodialysis. Effects of etelcalcetide on the skeleton are unknown.

METHODS: In a single-arm, open-label, 36-week prospective trial, we hypothesized that etelcalcetide improves bone quality and strength without damaging bone-tissue quality. Participants were 18 years or older, on hemodialysis ≥1 year, without calcimimetic exposure within 12 weeks of enrollment. BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated varying rates of efficacy, reliability, and sensitivity of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in identifying occult nodal disease for early stage oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) depending on the radionuclide agent utilized. No head-to-head comparison of cost or clinical outcomes of SLNB when utilizing [99mTc]tilmanocept versus [99mTc]sulfur colloid has been performed. The goal of this study was to develop a decision model to compare the cost-effectiveness of [99mTc]tilmanocept versus [99mTc]sulfur colloid in early stage OCSCC.

Objective: This study reports on the number and percentage of community water systems (CWSs) meeting fluoride concentration standards set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The study also explored changes in the population exposed to optimally fluoridated water in these systems between 2006 and 2020. Methods: This study analyzed U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data from 2006 to 2020, tabulating state-specific CWS fluoridation rates, ranking them, and calculating the percent change. Results: In 2020, 72.7% of the US population received CWS water, with 62.9% of those individuals served by a CWS system meeting DHHS …

The present pilot study was carried out to evaluate the periodontal status, the levels of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha in gingival crevicular fluid on hospitalized patients with colorectal cancer. Materials and Methods. The sample of our study was represented by 74 patients with colorectal cancer. They were assigned to one of the two study groups, based on cancer’s stages, as follows: (i) stage III-IV: 51 patients (A-group); (ii) stage I-II: 23 patients (B-group). This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among undergraduate dental students at Sofia Medical University and to investigate its associations with some demographic, educational and pandemic-related variables. A self-reported questionnaire that included the validated DASS-21 scale was administered to a group of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th year students (n=70, response rate 95.7%). Results indicated abnormal levels of depression, anxiety, and stress in 34.3%, 65.7% and 59.7% of the participants, respectively. BACKGROUND: Postoperative dental pain is pervasive and can affect a patient's quality of life. Adopting a patient-centric approach to pain management involves having contemporaneous information about the patient's experience of pain and using it to personalize care.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated the use of a mobile health (mHealth) platform to collect pain-related patient-reported outcomes over 7 days after the patients underwent pain-inducing dental procedures; we then relayed the information to the dentist and determined its impact on the patient's pain experience.
