Psychological Rehabilitation Of Cognitive Function In Stroke Patients, S. Taveemanoon Nov 2012

Psychological Rehabilitation Of Cognitive Function In Stroke Patients, S. Taveemanoon

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Cognitive rehabilitation is a treatment to assist patients who have sustained cognitive, emotional and behavioral impairment. The process is aimed to help the cognitive impaired individuals to progress to the most possible independent level of function. Regardless of specific treatment used, the patients are likely need to have comprehensive neuropsychological assessment performed. This will help them to understand the strengths and weakness of the patient and this becomes the starting point for designing a program to fit in for the patients. The treatment typically involves four therapeutic modalities, namely; reality orientation therapy, cognitive stimulus therapy, compensation methods and psychotherapy.

Peer Support For Type 2 Diabetes Self-Management, W. Jiamjarasrangsi

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Self-management support is considered to be the main-stay of chronic disease management, particularly type 2 diabetes. However, as the disease prevalence is rapidly increase, existing healthcare systems are not able to adequately provide self-management support for all patients. Utilizing peer support system in diabetes self-management support has high potential to fill this gap. Furthermore, peer support also has some advantages over professional-led self management support. This report describes topic relating to utilization of peer for self-management support including (a) background, (b) evidence about self management support and peer support, (c) role of peer in self management support, (d) models of …

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background and Rationale : Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract. In Thailand, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in males and fifth most common in females. Incidence rate of colorectal cancer has been rising in Thailand. Pathologic staging is the gold standard for colorectal cancer. However, it is followed by post-operative procedure. Computed tomography (CT) is noninvasive and preoperative assessment. Preoperative CT is useful for planning therapy by which local extension of the tumor into the adjacent organs or distant metastases are demonstrated. Differentiation between T2 and T3 colon cancer is important for consideration …

Differential Expression Patterns Of Proteins Involved In Epidermal Proliferation And Differentiation In Canine Atopic Dermatitis, Sirin Theerawatanasirikul, Achariya Sailasuta, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech, Tossaporn Nakbed, Komkrid Charngkaew, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol Sep 2012

Differential Expression Patterns Of Proteins Involved In Epidermal Proliferation And Differentiation In Canine Atopic Dermatitis, Sirin Theerawatanasirikul, Achariya Sailasuta, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech, Tossaporn Nakbed, Komkrid Charngkaew, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The pathological alterations in skin keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation in canine atopic dermatitis(CAD) were investigated in 20 small breed dogs with CAD (10 of which displayed lesional CAD skin and 10 nonlesionalCAD skin) and 11 healthy control animals. Biopsy of lesional CAD skin showed orthokeratotichyperkeratosis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) of Ki-67, a cellular marker for proliferation, showed a higher epidermalcell proliferation rate in the CAD dogs (p< 0.05) which positively correlated with Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent andSeverity Index, CADESI-03 (p< 0.01). IHC labeling indicated reduced expression of cornified envelope proteins, involucrin (IVL) and filaggrin (FLG) in both lesional and non-lesional skin (p< 0.05). In contrast, expression oflympho-epithelial Kazal-type inhibitor (LEKTI), which has been reported to inhibit proteases that cleave proFLG intoFLG, was increased in lesional skin compared to the normal controls (p< 0.05). The IHC results showed a positivecorrelation between CADESI-03 and LEKTI expression and a negative correlation between CADESI-03 and IVLexpression. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that epidermal hyperkeratosis in CAD is related todisturbance of both epidermal proliferation and cornified envelope differentiation. This is the first report of acorrelation of LEKTI with CAD.

Influence Of Intracellular Glutamine Depletion On Regulation Of Amino Acid Transport System A In Placental (Bewo) Cells, Boonrit Thongsong Sep 2012

Influence Of Intracellular Glutamine Depletion On Regulation Of Amino Acid Transport System A In Placental (Bewo) Cells, Boonrit Thongsong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Glutamine is known to modulate the expression of various genes and uptake activity of nutrient transportersin mammalian cells. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of intracellular glutamine status onamino acid transport system A in placental choriocarcinoma cells (BeWo). Intracellular glutamine was depleted byculturing the cells in regular medium without glutamine and by treating the cells for 16 hours with methioninesulfoximine (MSX), an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase. When cultured in the presence of glutamine, treatment withMSX had no effect on system A activity as monitored by MeAIB uptake. However, when cultured in the absence ofglutamine, treatment with …

A total of 27 fly samples were collected from various regions of Thailand. Six fly species in three subfamilies including Azeliinae (Hydrotaea spinigera), Muscinae (Musca domestica, M. sorbens) and Stomoxyinae (Stomoxys calcitrans, S. indicus and S. sitiens) were identified base on morphological taxonomy. PCR amplicons of the ITS2 gene of these flies varied between 312-377 bp with A+T content of 76.6%. ITS2 sequences of the flies in this study were 93-100% identity to …

Canine Urinary Incontinence Post-Neutering: A Review Of Associated Factors, Pathophysiology And Treatment Options, Suppawiwat Ponglowhapan, Muhammad Khalid, David Church

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Canine urinary incontinence is commonly encountered in small animal veterinary practice with highprevalence in spayed female dogs. The diagnosis of neutering-induced urinary incontinence is usually based onclinical signs, history and elimination of other possible diagnoses. The proposed predispositions to incontinence thatfollows neutering including gender, breed, body weight, obesity, tail docking, spaying technique (ovariectomy andovariohysterectomy) and morphology of the LUT, e.g. the position of neck of the bladder and urethral length, have allbeen investigated. At present, the exact underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. However, it is widelyagreed that the condition is multi-factorial and hormone-associated. The role of gonadotrophin LH and …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

This article is a case report of a patient who lost left permanent maxillary lateral incisor, canine and left permanent maxillary first premolar and alveolar bone due to the enucleation of eosinophilic granuloma. Also, the report described how a multidisciplinary approach may improve the esthetic outcome when only orthodontic treatment was insufficient. The early loss of permanent anterior teeth affected the harmony of the incisors shown and ultimately the esthetics of the smile, and was a challenge in treatment planning. The recurring esthetic dental (RED) proportion was used for space distribution. Esthetic crown lengthening was indicated to improve the gingival …
