Report Of Lawsonia Intracellularis Infection In Dogs By Polymerase Chain Reaction, Sariya Asawakar, Suphot Watanaphansak, Tanong Asawakarn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The purpose of this study was to survey Lawsonia intracellularis in dogs in Thailand by using Polymerase chain reaction technique. Lawsonia intracellularis is obligatory intracellular bacterium which causes proliferative enteropathy in animals, including dog. Fecal samples from 48 dogs were collected from Bangkok, Pathumthani and Nakhon Ratchasima and tested for L. intracellularis by PCR technique. The dogs were classified into two groups according to the presence or absence of diarrhea. In the group of dogs with diarrhea (n= 11), 6 dogs were positive (54.4%) and in the group without signs of diarrhea (n= 37), 15 dogs were positive (40.5%). The …

Side Effects In 412 Dogs From Swimming In A Chlorinated Swimming Pool, Korakot Nganvongpanit, Terdsak Yano

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study reports the side effects in dogs from swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool. Data werecollected from September 2008 until April 2012. A total of 412 dogs (male= 219 and female= 193), aged 38±30 months, served as the subjects. The dogs were divided into four groups based on the aims of swimming: entertainment (n=152), weight reduction (n= 53), rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery (n= 81), and rehabilitation for muscle and jointdisease (n= 126). The data were recorded for five separate swimming times. At first, some dogs (29.13%) showedoverexcitement and/or fear, but this percentage decreased with increased swimming frequency. Some dogs (36.51%)were …

Canine Urinary Incontinence Post-Neutering: A Review Of Associated Factors, Pathophysiology And Treatment Options, Suppawiwat Ponglowhapan, Muhammad Khalid, David Church Sep 2012

Canine Urinary Incontinence Post-Neutering: A Review Of Associated Factors, Pathophysiology And Treatment Options, Suppawiwat Ponglowhapan, Muhammad Khalid, David Church

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Canine urinary incontinence is commonly encountered in small animal veterinary practice with highprevalence in spayed female dogs. The diagnosis of neutering-induced urinary incontinence is usually based onclinical signs, history and elimination of other possible diagnoses. The proposed predispositions to incontinence thatfollows neutering including gender, breed, body weight, obesity, tail docking, spaying technique (ovariectomy andovariohysterectomy) and morphology of the LUT, e.g. the position of neck of the bladder and urethral length, have allbeen investigated. At present, the exact underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. However, it is widelyagreed that the condition is multi-factorial and hormone-associated. The role of gonadotrophin LH and …

Combination Of Acupuncture And Aquapuncture Using Vitamin B Complex For Treatment Of Chronic Degenerative Changes Of Hip Joints And Anal Relaxation In A Dog, Kui-Ming Chang, Kuan-Sheng Chen, Hsien-Chi Wang, Cheng-Hung Lai, Yu-Ta Hsieh, Hsing-Hui King, Wei-Ming Lee Sep 2012

Combination Of Acupuncture And Aquapuncture Using Vitamin B Complex For Treatment Of Chronic Degenerative Changes Of Hip Joints And Anal Relaxation In A Dog, Kui-Ming Chang, Kuan-Sheng Chen, Hsien-Chi Wang, Cheng-Hung Lai, Yu-Ta Hsieh, Hsing-Hui King, Wei-Ming Lee

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A beagle dog, aged 10 years old, was presented with anal relaxation. Chronic arthrosis of hip joints had beendiagnosed and treated on this dog’s first visit to the National Chung Hsing University Veterinary Medicine Teachinghospital. Except for unwillingness to walk on both hind limbs, pain on both hips and uncontrolled defecation due toanal relaxation, no other clinical signs were found during physical examination. The body temperature was 38.60C.CRT was normal (less than 2 sec). Heart beat was 110 beats/min and strong pulse was palpated. Based on theGlasgow composite pain scale, the pain scale of this dog was 2. Radiology of …

Effects Of Behavior Responses On The Vasovagal Tonus Index In Healthy Dogs, Walasinee Moonarmart, Kripitch Suttummaporn, Thapana Jarutummsiri, Rungrote Osathanoniri Mar 2012

Effects Of Behavior Responses On The Vasovagal Tonus Index In Healthy Dogs, Walasinee Moonarmart, Kripitch Suttummaporn, Thapana Jarutummsiri, Rungrote Osathanoniri

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The vasovagal tonus index (VVTI) is a time-domain analysis method of heart rate variability acquired over a short period. It is a useful measurement for evaluating severity and prognosis heart failure in dogs. Behavior responses can be used to evaluate stress in each dog individually. Stress during clinical examination may interfere with the VVTI since it influences the sympathetic nervous system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of behavior responses during clinical examination on the VVTI. Data set obtained from physical examination, systolic blood pressure measurement, electrocardiography, VVTI calculation, and video recording were collected from 50 …

Determination Of Multidrug Resistance (Mdr1) Gene And Its Mutations In Dogs By Using Polymerase Chain Reaction, Sariya Asawakarn, Valaiporn Ruangchaiprakarn, Naparee Srisowanna, Leelawat Wongwan, Anusorn Kanuengthong, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol Mar 2012

Determination Of Multidrug Resistance (Mdr1) Gene And Its Mutations In Dogs By Using Polymerase Chain Reaction, Sariya Asawakarn, Valaiporn Ruangchaiprakarn, Naparee Srisowanna, Leelawat Wongwan, Anusorn Kanuengthong, Gunnaporn Suriyaphol

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of this study is to establish a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory for detection of multidrug resistance1 (MDR1) mutation in Thailand. Blood samples were collected from 67 dogs, namely 16 Collies, 9 Shetland Sheepdogs, 5 Border Collies, 6 Shih tzus, 13 German Shepherds and 18 mixed breeds. Genomic DNA was extracted and PCR was performed to amplify 341 and 577 bp fragments to detect homozygous wild-type (+/+) and homozygous mutant (-/-), respectively. For the heterozygous mutant (+/-), both PCR fragments would be presented. An analysis of DNA sequences encompassing the 4-base pair deletion in the coding region of …
