The compilation of 1:1, 500,000 soil map oflnner Mongolia by using visual interpretation of Landsat images (MSS, TM, RBV) is one of the important parts of the application project of remote sensing to the investigation of the grassland resources in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Only by using visual intepretation of Landsat images could the soil map covering the area of more than one million square kilometers be compiled completely in three years. The characteristics of runoff yield in the soil surface of a drainage basin and the distribution of surface water resources in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have been studied in detail with remote sensing in recent years. This study aims at offering some scientific evidences to adjust the structure ofland use in the cross-area of agriculture and animal husbandry and more reasonably to locate the bases for agriculture and husbandry.

Pennisetum alopecuroides Spreng is one of the most aggressive weeds of tame pastures in the Aso district, which often causes the deterioration of the grasslands. It is thus important to develop methods of analysis of the weed dynamics in real time and techniques for effective weed control. Hayashi et al. (1986) observed that cutting carried out in September was the most effective method to prevent the growth of the weed. However, the vegetation survey methods currently used cannot monitor sudden changes of grassland vegetation over wide areas. The application of remote sensing techniques to grassland resource surveys of the counties is a key task and will play a significant role in the rational use of grassland resources. The grazing and hay lands of Saskatchewan, a Province in western Canada, extend from the wide open short grass prairie of the south to the northern roughland bush pastures of the Aspen Parkland (Populus tremuloides). These areas total 7,853,000 ha. This study is part of a continuing effort directed towards the development of operational remote sensing analysis techniques for the estimation of grazing conditions in both native and seeded pastures in Saskatchewan. The seasonal dynamic state of the above ground biomass (or herbage mass) of four main types of natural grassland were studied in Hulunbeir grassland. The four types were meadow steppe, Aneurolepidium chinense + Stipa grandis steppe, Aneurolepidium chinense steppe and tussock - small semi - shrubs steppe. The results of the research show that the herbage mass of all four types have strong positive correlations with the monthly accumulated temperature, mean temperature, and precipitation of the preceding month. The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is situated in the semi-arid areas of northwest China, with an elevation of 1 100 m-2 200 m. The annual mean temperature is 7-9°C, the annual mean precipitation and evaporation are 118-660 mm and 1 400-2 400 mm respectively and the total hours of sunshine is 2 200-3 100 in a year (Guo Sijia et al., 1985). Date on monthly and annual pasture production for use in farm budgeting, in farm management models and at the core of expert systems are rare for large areas of the Australian pastoral zone, and for large areas of the world. We have sought here to demonstrate a method of .overcoming this problem by the development of maps of annual and seasonal herbage accumulation for several types of improved pasture in the Hunter Region using comprehensive climatic data, a simple growth model (Fitzpatrick and Nix, 1975) and a small plot pasture trial at Scone (32°S).

Seasonal precipitation and temperature patterns play a significant role in Mediterranean grasslands, influencing within and between year variation in herbage production (Bentley and Talbot 1951, Rossiter 1966, Pitte and Heady 1978). Within the growing season, accumulated degree-days (AAD) which integrate season length with temperature should be an ideal index to herbage production in California's annual grasslands. This paper presents the simple correlations of seasonal herbage yield with ADD and proposes an efficient method of estimating seasonal herbage production profiles.

This situation results from inappropriate structures of forage production and economic policies in agriculture. The predominant domesticated ruminants in New Zealand are sheep and cattle. However in the last decade other animal species have been incorporated into farming systems, particularly goats which have increased from 10 thousand to 1 million over that time. The motives for this change have primarily been economic ones, in an attempt by farmers to increase income and reduce costs. Goats provide direct financial returns to hill farmers through sale of fibre (mohair, cashgora, cashmere) and meat. Annual pasture-cereal rotations dominate land use in the 250-600 rnrn rainfall zone of southern Australia (Puckridge and French, 1983). Although this ley farming system appears simple in concept, farm managers attempting to maximise profits can face complex and difficult decisions. Use of annual legume pasture species such as subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and medics (Medicago spp.) is widespread. The dynamic simulation model GRAZE (Loewer et al., 1987) incorporates plant and beef animal growth in describing the grazing process. GRAZE had its beginnings at the University of Kentucky in 1976 (Walker et al., 1977; Loewer et al., 1981 ; Loewer and Smith, 1986) and was further developed through three regional research projects (Watson and Wells, 1985). Animal production from grassland is a complex process involving man as well as animals and plants which interact in a changing environment. The production can be considered as two interacting systems, a management and a production system as shown in Figure I. The need for legume based pastures for the acid soils of the lowland tropics is a research priority, but only limited success has been achieved, especially in Latin America. This paper records a dynamic thrust by a multidisciplinary research team, the Tropical Pastures Program (TPP), to provide the first grass/legume association for pasture development in well-drained savannas of eastern Colombia.

Recently there has been a tremendous change in animal production systems in Japan, with increasing consumption of concentrate feeds. The numbers of swine and poultry which consume concentrate feeds are increasing and concentrates are also given to herbivorous animals, mainly cattle, not only to finishing beef cattle but also to dairy cattle and breeding beef cows. L'efficacite d'une conduite de paturage reside dans son aptitude a favoriser la production animale au moyen, notamment, de la mise a la disposition du troupeau d'une ressource herbacee la moins limitante possible (en quantite et en qualite) par rapport au potentiel de production des animaux et ce, le plus longtemps et le plus regulierement possible durant la periode de vegetation.
