The economic and biological feasibility. of a black walnut-livestock-grazing multicropping-management regime bas been evaluated for comparison with a similar livestock-management regime conducted in the open. Pure tall fescue plots were established under open and black walnut-shade conditions. Forage yields on a dry-weight basis were estimated for a 3-year period. A concurrent grazing trial was co􀀌ducted on similar sites using 1.2-ha plots. Black walnut seedlings were planted within the plots on a 3 x 12-m spacing and protected from grazing animals by electric fencing. The practice of accumulating growth of cool-season grasses in the late summer and early autumn for subsequent grazing in late autumn and winter, known as stockpiling, has been widely accepted by beef cow-calf producers. The objectives of our study were to determine the growth characteristics of cool-season grasses in the autumn under nitrogen (N) fertilization and to in­vestigate utilization of stockpiled forages. Experiments were conducted to assess interseeding small grains by no-till methods in dormant Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dacrylon [L.] Pers.) for forage, silage, grain, or beef production. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was interseeded in Coastal ber­mudagrass (CBG) sod. Grain yields of 1,695 kg/ha reduced CBG yields 14%, and silage yields of 6.7 tons/ha resulted in a 5 % reduction in CBG yield. Because plant beeders have few laboratory analyses of forage quality that are good predictors of animal performance when grazing pasture, • we studied the feasibility of grazing small pastures with cattle in order to detect possible forage-quality dif­ferences among cultivars of tall fescue (Festuca anmdinacea Schreb). Kentucky 31, Kenmont, Fawn, and Missouri 96 tall fescue cultivars and Kenhy, a Lolium-Festuca derivative, were grown in 0.47-ha pastures and grazed in separate periods ranging from 35 to 68 days during the spring, summer, and autumn of 1974-1976. Studies were conducted to assess the long-term effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization of tall fescue on cow-calf performance and health problems, including grass tetany, fat necrosis, gastrointestinal parasitism, and nitrate poisoning. Kentucky 31 tall fescue pastures fertilized at three levels of N were grazed with Angus cows at 0.4 ha/cow on a year-round basis. Mefluidide treatment of Kentucky 31 tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) in the spring will inhibit seed-head formation, maintain the forage in an immature and vegetative stage, and increase forage N and soluble-sugar content and in-vivo nutrient utilization in the ovine. Studies in our laboratory showed that perloline is a prin­cipal alkaloid in tall fescue during the summer and that concentration peaks at a time when cattle grazing tall fescue pastures fre­quently have severely reduced performance (summer syndrome or summer fescue toxicosis). A series of grazing experiments has been conducted 80 km east of Memphis, Tennessee, since 1969 on fine-silty, mixed, ther­ mic, Typic Hapludalfs soils to evaluate productivity and quality of Cynodon pastures grown with N fertilizer or in combination with Festuca arundinacea and/or Ladino, TnJolium repens, and sometimes with T. pmtense, for growing beef steers. Seasonal changes in amount, compos1bon, and digestibility of fiber in vegetative tissues of forage grasses are usually associated with advancing tissue maturity. Our objective was to determine the relative effects of maturity and environment on amount and composition of hemicellulose in field-grown tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Regrowth of identical chronological age was sampled weekly at different times during the growing season. Leaf samples were extracted with neutral detergent solution to isolate cell walls (NDF). Several physiological characters have been proposed for use in breeding programs for higher yield potential. Our objectives were to evaluate recurrent restricted phenotypic selection for developing populations of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) for low and high rates of leaf-area expansion (LAE). Mter four cycles, LAE was 181 and 74 mm2/day for the high (H) and low (L) populations, respectively. It appeared that LAE changes in early generations were due largely to increased leaf elongation rate (LER) of the H populations, whereas later progress was due largely to decreased leaf width (L W) of the L populations. In order to extend growing season and to increase annual production of pastures in southern part of Kyushu where warm and humid summers alternate cold winters, authors attempted to seed a mixture of cool- and warm-season pasture species. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) were sown in spring and autumn to form monoculture and mixture swards. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) are commonly grown together in pastures of the southeastern USA. Allelopathy of tall fescue may reduce white clover germination and growth during establishment of the legume. The objective of this study was to determine if white clover genotypes differ in germination and initial growth in extracts of tall fescue leaves. Agar containing leaf extracts from tall fescue was used to test the germination and root growth of forty white clover genotypes. Ces differences etaient observees a l'auge. Nous avons voulu verifier si, et dans quelles conditions, elles se retrouvaient !ors d'une utilisation en paturage continu par des vaches laitieres. A selection program was initiated in 1975 to select for high (H) - and low (L)-LAER in a broad-based population of tall fescue ( Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) to improve vegetative herbage yield (Nelson and Sleper, 1983). Response to divergent selection was linear and symmetric for five cycles (Reeder et al., 1984). Mean increase in selecting for H-LAER was greater than 10 % per cycle ; a mean decrease of more than 8 % per cycle was observed when selecting for L-LAER. Nelson et al. (1977) and Reeder et al. In previous works, nitrogen uptake by a grass sward during regrowth has been studied and modelled (Salette and Lemaire, 1981 ; Lemaire and Salette, 1984). The shear strength of leaves of pasture grasses was measured using a shearing device. The mechanics of shearing were investigated and leaf strength was measured either as the force or the energy required to shear a leaf. The investigations indicate that the inherent strength of leaf tissue is best measured as a force corrected for the length of cutting blade in contact with the leaf. Inherent shear strength did not change along the length of a leaf blade, but did change with the physiological age of the leaf. Cattle grazing leads to the generation of patches differing in forage quality and quantity even in virtually monoespecific pastures. This work assesses the effect of two biotypes of different growth rate and mature body weight on the patchiness of a tall fescue pasture. We analysed height, herbage mass by unit surface, and proportions of heavily and lightly utilized patches through a residual herbage mass gradient generated by both biotypes at four stocking rates from March to December. Results of two grazing experiments on the effect of maintaining contrasting sward states upon leaf appearance rate of individual tillers (LAR) and tiller density (D) are reported. The following species were evaluated: Cynodon dactylon(Cd), Leersia hexandra(Lh), y Paspalum dilatatum(Pd) in a natural grassland of the Flooding Pampa, and Festuca arundinacea in a sown pasture. Except for Pd, LAR decreased with the increment of sward surface height. The degree of this morphogenetic plasticity varied among species. Endophyte-infected (E+) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) has enhanced fitness in some environments. The objectives were to measure the effects of the endophyte Acremonium coenophialum on seed yield traits and to determine the transmission rate of the endophyte from infected maternal plants into seed. Twenty infected and noninfected (E-) seedlings of each of three tall fescue cultivars were transplanted to the field in May, 1993. In 1994, there were significant differences between E+ and E- plants for panicle number and seed weight per panicle. Eleven cultivars of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea, Schreb.) and two cultivars of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) are part of a study to evaluate yield, establishment vigor, persistence and palatability under autumn stockpiling conditions. Included in the study are two endophyte infected-cultivars of tall fescue to compare interactions with endophyte free and infected cultivars. The results demonstrate that the newer endophyte-free and low-endophyte tall fescue cultivars evaluated are similar to other orchardgrass and endophyte-infected tall fescue cultivars in establishment vigor and early growth the year following establishment.

Dormancy can be induced in grass seeds by soaking in aqueous solution of gibberellin synthesis inhibitors, such as paclobutrazol and tetcyclacis. In a study conducted with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb.), dormancy was induced by a 48 hour soak at 35° C in 100 micromolar tetcyclacis (TCY) and 100 micromolar paclobutrazol (PB) as determined by failure to emerge at 20° C. Emergence in the untreated, water soaked, TCY soaked and PB soaked seeds were 92, 92, 10 and 18 % respectively. The containers containing seed and seedlings were then held at 5°C …

Four cultivars of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were evaluated under sheep grazing at Palmerston North, New Zealand to assess the productivity and persistence of the newly released cultivar Grasslands Advance. Results from four years under grazing showed Grasslands Advance to be a considerable improvement over the older cultivar Grasslands Roa in both total sward yield and in dry matter contribution of tall fescue. It outperformed the other three cultivars in years 2 and 3 and was not significantly different to Grasslands Roa and AU Triumph in year 1 or AU Triumph in year 4. Despite a mild climate and relatively uniform distribution of rainfall, cool-season pastures in the Coastal Plain of the southeastern U.S. have been limited primarily to annual grasses and legumes. Preliminary evaluations indicated promise for the recently released cultivar, ‘Georgia-5’ tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), and an experimental Texas bluegrass (Poa arachnifera Torr.). Commercially available seed supplies allowed evaluation of the tall fescue at multiple sites, while the Texas bluegrass evaluation was limited by seed availability to a single small-plot experiment. The objective of this study was to contribute some quantitative information regarding the proportion of cell types and the thickness of cell walls in different plant parts of three major forage species, lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and maize (Zea mays L.). All plant parts examined contained a significant proportion of cell types with walls which appeared too thick to be completely degraded during the time which plant particles are likely to spend in the rumen; this applied particularly to lucerne stems and maize leaf blades.

Grass hay was baled with a variety of balers and tying materials in June, 1994 and 1995, at Jackson, Ohio. The bales were prepared and stored several ways. Waste hay accounted for less than ten percent of the dry matter after storage for six and eighteen months in all cases except one (a plastic wrap system intended for use with haylage). Bales stored inside had no waste. The best outdoor storage system, with less than one percent waste, used a ‘bale bonnet’ (top half covered with a plastic sheet) with the bale on a slatted pallet. Influence Of The Acremonium Endophytes On Agronomic Traits Of Perennial Ryegrass And Tall Fescue In France, C Ravel, F Balfourier, G Charmet

Seven cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with (EI) and without (EF) Acremonium endophytes were compared in trial plots at 5 locations in France. Such a trial was also established with 6 tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) cultivars in 5 locations. These trials were sown either in 1994 or 1995. Yields and visual traits (rust and drought tolerances, vigour 6-weeks following the sowing) were assessed. The data were analysed by means of variance analysis with two main factors (cultivars and endophyte status) and their interaction.
