Using the acetylene reduction assay, field studies in recent years have investigated the variation in N fixation in grazed systems, and some of the principles involved in the interaction with available soil N have been described. This experiment extends this work to include the effect of grazing management on the factors influencing N fixation. Two self-contained sheep-grazed units, one a 10-paddock rotationally grazed system and the other set stocked, were established on a high-fertility ryegrass-white clover pasture, with a basic stocking rate of 22 sheep/ha. Grazing alfalfa (Medicago sativa, L.) would provide high quality pasture in animal production systems. The influence of grazing alfalfa with sheep in early spring or in summer on regrowth characteristics, weed encroachment, and subsequent yields was investigated during two years and on hay yields during year 3 with no grazing imposed. Alfalfa was grazed in spring for 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks at two grazing pressures: light (LAI of 1.0) and heavy (LAI< 0.5). Non-grazed alfalfa was harvested at late bud stage. Regrowth on all systems was harvested at 1/10 bloom. Grazing for 6 weeks reduced subsequent hay yield only in year 2. Heavy grazing pressure increased weed encroachment but weeds were effectively controlled with herbicides. Few residual effects were measurable in year 3. Another planting of alfalfa was grazed in summer following two hay cuts by five systems: 1), 2), and 3) grazed about 14 days after second hay cut for 2, 4, and 6 weeks, respectively; 4) grazed at early bud stage for 7-10 days; 5) grazed at early bloom for 7 days. For system 6, alfalfa was not grazed and hay was cut at 1/10 bloom. Following grazing, hay was cutif regrowth reached 1/10 bloom stage. Grazing for 2, 4, and 6 weeks linearly decreased fall regrowth and increased weed encroachment. In year 3, yield was reduced by grazing except at early bloom but differences were slight by August. Weed encroachment tended to increase with grazing duration. These data indicate that alfalfa is more tolerant of grazing in spring than summer. If weeds are controlled, extended grazing durations appear possible.

New'zealand tussock grassland management is traditionally extensive. In the South Island high country the often difficult terrain combined with a harsh and unreliable climate is not inducive to efficient utilisation. Oversowing temperate clovers and grasses and topdressing with sulphur and phosphorus based fertilisers is an accepted way to improve the quantity and quality of pasture, but little is known on how to effectively utilise the extra feed grown. Pasture systems in the southeastern U.S. are based on perennial warm-season grasses, but forage quality of these species is often low during mid-summer through early fall. Two perennial forages that were recently released in Florida, 'Mott' dwarf elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. ; Sollenberger et al., 1988b) and the legume 'Florigraze' rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth. ; Prine et al., 1981), have potential to provide herbage of high quality during May through October. Sulla is a semi-perennial herbaceous forage legume which has rarely been used for grazing. Field studies were undertaken to determine the relative importance of regrowth sites on sulla so that guidelines for grazing management could be refined. Regrowth was predominantly from the crown and most stems remaining after grazing subsequently died. It is concluded that grazing management should be severe and infrequent but, because regrowth is from the crown, treading damage needs to be avoided.

Degradation gradients due to grazing were determined from floristic data collected between January 1990. and November 1991 in the Astrebla correlation between grasslands of Longreach, abundance and Australia. condition A score linear correlation between Astrebla abundance and condition score confirmed strong confirmed linear the presence of gradients. Astrebla Degradation models were further validated by the presence of known grazing gradients. The extent and characteristics of temperate and mountainous climatic zones, steeply dissected and mountainous areas, permanent meadows and pasture lands, and the trend of land use evolution and aspects of land degradation are presented and discussed. The rangelands improvement strategy in Bulgaria is based on mineral fertilisation of mountainous grasslands leading to an increase in production of dry material, protein, phosphorus and cereals, This reduces sheet erosion. Overgrazing and prolonged dry periods, causing a decrease in the number of species, are also discussed, Measures to improve grassland practices are proposed.

The broad objective of this paper is to review the fundamental principles of grazing management as a means of assessing the inherent value of intensive and extensive grazing systems. Conceptual analyses of intensive and extensive grazing systems reveal that the fundamental differences between intensive and extensive grazing systems are related to differences in non-grazing rather than grazing tactics. Intensive grazing systems employ a wide array of non-grazing tactics in an attempt to overcome the inherent ecological constraints that limit secondary (i.e., livestock) productivity in extensively grazed systems. Where livestock production depends upon pastures, management is more difficult in environments where rainfall varies considerably from season to season and year to year. Flexible grazing practices are needed to optimise species composition and pasture productivity. Results presented in this paper show that pasture composition can be improved within climatic constraints, by grazing practices within seasons, In temperate annual pastures, long rests in winter (similar to a long rotation during that season) increased annual legume content in early spring from 20 to 50%. Cultivars of phalaris (Plialaris aquatica L.) bred in Australia for seedling vigour and winter activity are reported to be less persistent in response to heavy_ grazing than the original introduction, cv. Australian. In an experiment comparing the morphological characters of cultivars, Australian was shown to possess a morphology well adapted to grazing. In contrast, the bred cultivars formed more erect pastures with low basal area, more prone to invasion by annual grasses and retaining less leaf area after grazing. Vertical and temporal trends in herbage yield and quality were assessed in a study sown in 1989 near Elora, Ontario. In a replicated field trial with 0.1 ha paddocks, Hereford heifers rotationally grazed 2 swards to each of 2 residual grazing heights, namely, SO and 100 mm, with a requisite 200-2S0 mm entry height. Prcgrazing herbage mass was controlled al higher or lower levels by grazing management (intensity or frequency). Three of the experiments used ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) swards, while the fourth included Grasslands Matua prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Kunth.) and white clover swards. The high mass swards generally contained higher proportions of dead matter and stem, and the herbage from these swards was always less digestible. The effect of strategic grating in spring and autumn on seed production, recruitment and seedling survival of Vulp/11 spp. was assessed in experiments at 2 sites near Armidale on the northern Tablelands of New South Wales. V11lpia spp. field populations in 1992 in autumn-grazed plots which had been heavily grazed in the previous spring were reduced 97.391, at Site 1 and 91,291, at Site 2 in comparison with similar plots which had not been grazed in the previous spring. The objectives of these experiments were to study the effects of three resting periods (RP) of elephant-grass pasture on milk production and composition of Holstein-Zebu cows. These trials were carried out during two consecutive rainy seasons (December to May) using 24 cows in each year. An assessment was made of the influence of a Phalaris based pasture which was either continuously stocked, rotationally grazed or spelled during summer on the autumn soil water deficit. Soil remained close to saturation at 120 cm under continuously grazed pasture. Rotationally grazed and summer spelled pastures maintained the soil profile at 120 cm in a dry state during summer and autumn. Differences between years and sites could be partly explained by differences in summer rainfall, solar radiation and the amount of green plant material which grew when stock were excluded over the summer-autumn period. The objective of this study was to determine whether seasonal deferred grazing regimes could be used to increase the composition of cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L) in perennial pastures growing in temperate Australia. The experiment was conducted over three years at two sites; one in Victoria and the other in Tasmania, Australia. Relative to the control of continuous grazing, deferred grazing in spring reduced the amount of cocksfoot in the sward. Conversely, deferred grazing in summer increased the amount of cocksfoot present. It is concluded that deferred grazing can be used to change the amount of cocksfoot in a pasture, …

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of deferred grazing strategies on phalaris (Phalaris aquatica) composition in both new and established pastures in temperate Australia. The experiment was conducted over three years at three sites; two in southern Victoria and one in northern Victoria. Relative to the control of continuous grazing all treatments maintained phalaris composition. At two sites winter deferment of grazing increased phalaris composition. It is concluded that deferred grazing of phalaris over the autumn, winter and spring will increase phalaris composition. The critical length of the grazing deferment and timing requires further …

This study examined grazing management options on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) based pastures to determine if perennial ryegrass could be increased in a degraded pasture, or maintained in a newly sown pasture. Study sites were at Hamilton and Cavendish, Victoria; Delamere, South Australia, and Ross and Parattah, Tasmania. Average rainfall is 500mm at Ross, 575mm at Parattah, 700mm at Hamilton, 650mm at Cavendish and 900mm at Delamere. Limpograss (Hemarthria altissima [Poir.] Stapf et C.E. Hubb.) in vitro digestion is greater than most perennial grasses adapted to Florida. Weight gain of cattle grazing limpograss has been lower than expected due in part to low herbage N concentration. Experiments were conducted on limpograss pastures to assess N fertilization, overseeding of the legume aeschynomene (Aeschynomene americana L), and feeding of N supplements to cattle as means of overcoming this limitation. Greater N fertilization, overseeding aeschynomene, and supplementation (corn-urea mixtures) increased weight gain 0.30, 0.23, and 0.24-0.35 kg d-1, respectively, over control treatments. Common approaches to evaluating carrying capacity are stocking rate trials for research and trial and error adjustments for ranchers. These approaches are inadequate as operational decision guides for grazing management. The Grazing Manager (TGM) is a generalized management level dynamic model that provides a new approach to stocking rate analysis. Grazing pressure is integrated over time with a function called pasture demand ratio (PDR) which is based on cumulative forage demand relative to cumulative forage production within a forage year. Changes in basal area and soil water extraction were examined in four perennial grasses, Phalaris aquatica cv. Sirosa, Dactylis glomerata cv. Porto, Festuca arundinacea cv. Demeter and Danthonia richardsonii cv. Tarana. Treatments were factorially arranged with four species, three different grazing intervals (2-, 5- and 8- weeks) and two watering regimes (rainfed and supplementary water)and were imposed from early spring to mid-autumn in 1994/5 and 1995/6. A conventional grazing and crop production system and a sustainable system with integrated grazing and crop production were compared in a farm-scale experiment. The objective was to improve sustainability through improved nutrient management and reduced off-farm chemical use while retaining productivity and profitability. Each system involved 48 steers per year and 32 hectares of crop and pasture land in four replications. Daily gains and final weights were higher (P<0.05) for steers in the Sustainable System than the Conventional System but required more supplemental hay feeding. Initially, more forage was harvested from the Sustainable System, but as grazing management improved, more forage was harvested through grazing, and harvested forage became similar between the systems. Pesticide requirements were lower and N fertilizer use was reduced more than 50% for the Sustainable System. The Sustainable System maintained total crop and livestock production potential and was at least as profitable as the Conventional System.

The objectives of the present study are to demonstrate techniques of native pasture improvement to farming communities and to assess their ability to apply pasture management, including deferred grazing. The work was conducted in four villages in north west Syria and in one location in Beka’a, Lebanon. The results indicated significant improvement on pasture productivity and the farmers showed a positive attitude towards adopting the new practices.

Climate and human activities, such as drought event and livestock grazing, generally coupled to influence the structure and function of grassland ecosystems. However, most of previous studies focused on the isolated effects of grazing or drought on grassland ecosystems, with little attention paid to the combined effects of them. Enteric methane (CH4) emissions were measured in forty spring calving cows offered one of two (n=20) contrasting diets (High Grass; HG, Low Grass; LG) over 10 weeks in early lactation (8th February – 18th April 2021). All cows were blocked for breed and parity and balanced on milk production, economic breeding index (EBI), bodyweight and body condition score and randomly allocated to treatments. The HG grazing treatment cows were offered their full daily nutrient requirement from grazed grass and concentrate with no silage supplementation.
