Norepinephrine And Temperature Regulation In Goldfish, Lonnie Paul Wollmuth
Norepinephrine And Temperature Regulation In Goldfish, Lonnie Paul Wollmuth
Dissertations and Theses
Cannulae were implanted into forebrain loci of goldfish (Carassius auratus; 45-90 g) to determine (i) the effects and site of action of intracranial norepinephrine (NE) injections on behavioral thermoregulation and (ii) the mechanism and the types of adrenoreceptors involved in the thermoregulatory effect of NE. After 30 min in a thermal gradient, implanted fish were injected with norepinephrinebitartrate salt (2.5-500 ng NE) in a total volume of 0.2 ul (carrier was 0.7% NaCl). Injections of 5, 10, 25, and 50 ng NE into the anterior aspect of the nucleus preopticus periventricularis (NPP1 Peter and Gill 1975) led to consistent, dose-dependent …

The Effect Of Massage On Blood Lactate Levels Following A Maximal Treadmill Run, Ann Morien-Mcmurray
The Effect Of Massage On Blood Lactate Levels Following A Maximal Treadmill Run, Ann Morien-Mcmurray
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of massage on blood lactate levels in trained male runners following a maximal treadmill run. Twenty-two male distance runners performed a maximal aerobic run on a motor-driven treadmill, at 9 mph and a 2 1/2% grade increase every minute until exhaustion. Fifteen of the subjects were randomly selected for either an active bicycle recovery (pedaling at 40% VO2max), or to receive a massage. A third group served as a control and lay supine during recovery. The three recoveries lasted 20 min. Venous blood was collected during the recovery at 3, …

The Effects Of Various Lumbar/Sacral Back Support Systems Upon Human Peak Muscular Force, Total Work, And Average Power, Michael Lee Woodhouse
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of two lumbar/sacral back supports upon peak muscular force, total work, and average power. Subjects consisted of ten well conditioned male volunteers with an age range of 21-35 years. Each subject volunteered individually to participate and was required to read and sign an inform consent form prior to participating in the investigation.
The investigative design was quasi-experimental with a repeated measures (treatment-by-subjects) methodology. Each subject experienced three testing treatments to include each lumbar/sacral support and one without. The testing protocol consisted of three isokinetic back testing devices developed by …
Running Endurance In 27-Hour Fasted Humans, Kristin A. Carlson
Running Endurance In 27-Hour Fasted Humans, Kristin A. Carlson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Nine male marathon runners were exercised to exhaustion to determine the effects of a 27-hour fast on endurance performance. Each subject completed two exercise tests at 72% peak oxygen uptake (Vo2max), one following a 27-hour fast and one three hours after a pre-exercise meal, in random order. Fasting caused a 44.7±5.8% (±SE) decrease in endurance performance (p2(9.3±2.0%), heart rate (8.4±2.4%), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and psychological fatigue, evident within the first 60 minutes of exercise. There was no difference in plasma glucose or epinephrine levels. Muscle glycogen degraded at the same rate (0.48±.15 vs 0.47±.28 u moles …
Selenium-Induced Enhancement Of Hematoporphyrin Derivative Phototoxicity In Murine Bladder Tumor Cells, Jeffrey M. Tosk
Selenium-Induced Enhancement Of Hematoporphyrin Derivative Phototoxicity In Murine Bladder Tumor Cells, Jeffrey M. Tosk
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The phototoxicity of hematoporphyrin derivative (Hpd) to murine bladder tumor (MBT-2) cells was studied in vitro. It was observed that selenium in the form of sodium selenite enhanced Hpd-sensitized photodamage in MBT-2 cells under conditions where the selenite alone was non-toxic. Sodium selenite was found to enhance the fluorescence emission of Hpd and augment the Hpd-sensitized photooxidation of tryptophan. The data indicate that sodium selenite is able to disaggregate Hpd, thereby enhancing Hpd-sensitized phototoxicity.
Fetal Whole-Body Fluid, Cardiovascular And Endocrine Dynamics : Computer Analysis Of Regulatory Mechanisms, Peter Stuart Gold
Fetal Whole-Body Fluid, Cardiovascular And Endocrine Dynamics : Computer Analysis Of Regulatory Mechanisms, Peter Stuart Gold
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The dynamics of transcapillary fluid and protein distribution and endocrine regulation of cardiovascular function were studied in chronically instrumented fetal sheep during the third trimester. Average experimental changes in vascular pressures, blood volume, plasma hormone concentrations, hematocrit and plasma protein concentration were analyzed using mathematical modeling and parameter optimization techniques in order to determine values for the major parameters which regulate fluid, protein and endocrine dynamics and to determine endocrine dose-response relationships to changes in cardiovascular function. The hormones which were considered are arginine vasopressin (AVP), angiotensin II (AII), epinephrine (EPI) and norepinephrine (NE). Vascular disturbances which were considered include …
Hemodynamics During Pregnancy: A Model For Cardiac Enlargement, David James Mendelson
Hemodynamics During Pregnancy: A Model For Cardiac Enlargement, David James Mendelson
Dissertations and Theses
Cardiac output increases by 30-50% during mammalian pregnancy. This increase is reflected by elevation in both heart rate and stroke volume. The primary mechanism of increased stroke volume appears to be cardiac enlargement, rather than increased preload, afterload, or contractility. Animal studies have shown that enlargement of the heart occurs prior to an increase in uterine blood flow during pregnancy and this type of enlargement can be mimicked by sex steroid administration.
Systemic vascular resistance greatly decreases during pregnancy and with sex steroid administration. It has been postulated that systemic vascular resistance may be a signal for heart size changes. …
The Parotid Salivary Glands. I. Potential Role Of A Parotid Factor Modulating Pancreatic Β-Cell Function. Ii. An Immunohistological Study To Identify Parotid Hormone Secreting Cell(S), Denise S. Cook
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The physiologic role of the parotid glands is more complex than its recognized salivary function. Various investigators have suggested an intriguing relationship between the parotids and the pancreas, both endocrine and exocrine in nature.
We studied in rats the contribution of salivary glands in the regulation of β-cell function in response to an acute intra-arterial glucose challenge in parotidectomized, submandibulariectomized and totally sialoadenectomized animals. Fifteen days post-parotidectomy or total sialoadenectomy, the β-cell response, at 2 minutes post-glucose infusion, diminishes and stabilizes at about 40% of the preoperative value. Concurrent with the depressed insulin secretion a correspondingly higher glucose titer was …
Effect Of Ethanol On Thermoregulation In The Goldfish Carassius Auratus, Candace Sharon O'Connor
Effect Of Ethanol On Thermoregulation In The Goldfish Carassius Auratus, Candace Sharon O'Connor
Dissertations and Theses
In an attempt to elucidate the mechanism by which ethanol affects vertebrate thermoregulation, the effect of ethanol on temperature selection was studied in the goldfish, Carassius auratus. Ethanol was administered to 10 to 15 g fish by mixing it in the water of a temperature gradient. The dose response curve was very steep between 0.5% (v/v) ethanol (no response) and 0.7% (significant lowering of selected temperature in treated fish). Fish were exposed to concentrations of ethanol as high as 1.7%, at which concentration most experimental fish lost their ability to swim upright in the water. At concentrations higher than …

Descriptive Ethology And Activity Patterns Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Tim W. Clark, Louise Richardson, Steven C. Forrest, Denise E. Casey, Thomas M. Campbell Iii
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
Aspects of the aboveground ethology and activity patterns of the black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigipes) are described for a population in northwestern Wyoming as a first step in building a descriptive ethogram and quantification of activity patterns. We observed at least 237 individual ferrets for 208 hr on 441 occasions from 2 December 1981 through 25 September 1984. Mainenance behaviors (locomotion, alert, grooming, and sunning, defecation and urination, digging, and predation) and social behavior (reproduction, ontogeny, maternal, play, agonistic) are described as well as some ferret-human interactions. Ferret vocalizations are subjectively described. We located ferrets during most months including …

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) occupied area lies in the western Big Horn Basin, Park County, Wyoming. Cody, a nearby town, shows a record high temperature of 40.5 C and a low of -43.3 C, with 173 days each year below 0 C. Area geology is dominated by Absaroka volcanics. Soils are shallow (0.5 m) and underlain by unconsolidated gravels; well-drained, medium-textured clay-loams (ca 1 m in depth); or clays derived from shale parent materials. Vegetation is characterized by a wheatgrass-needlegrass shrubsteppe type (Agropyron/Stipa/Artemisia). Prior to white settlement, the area hosted a diverse large mammal community. …
The Effect Of Salinity On Habitat Selection Of Two Oregon Chiton Species (Katharina Tunicata And Mopalia Hindsii), David Carl Rostal
The Effect Of Salinity On Habitat Selection Of Two Oregon Chiton Species (Katharina Tunicata And Mopalia Hindsii), David Carl Rostal
Dissertations and Theses
Adult specimens of Katharina tunicata (mean weight = 10.23 grams) and Mopalia hindsii (mean weight = 10.90 grams) were tested for osmotic stress tolerance and oxygen consumption rates in a series of salinities (120%, 100%, 80%, 60%, and 40% seawater) at 11°C and 16L:8D photoperiod. K. tunicata and M. hindsii displayed similar trends in percent body weight variation and volume regulatory responses to osmotic stress. However, K. tunicata experienced a significantly higher percent body weight increase than did M. hindsii in response to hypo-osmotic conditions (80%, 60%, and 40% seawater). The mean rates of oxygen consumption per salinity for the …
