The Effect Of Cold Acclimation On The Temperature Preference Of The Goldfish, Carassius Auratus, And The Brown Bullhead, Ictalurus Nebulosus, Alfred Lord Nov 1987

The Effect Of Cold Acclimation On The Temperature Preference Of The Goldfish, Carassius Auratus, And The Brown Bullhead, Ictalurus Nebulosus, Alfred Lord

Dissertations and Theses

Two species of fish, Carassius auratus and Ictalurus nebulosus, were subjected to cold acclimation regimes. Acclimation temperatures were slowly lowered to 3°C, then held for a period of time. At various times during this regime, fish were taken out and allowed to spend time in a temperature gradient to determine their preferred temperatures. Carassius were left in the gradient just long enough to determine a measure of the acute temperature preference, while Ictalurus were left in the temperature gradient for longer periods of time to observe any changes that might occur as the fish adjusted to selected temperatures. Signal Processing In Bacterial Chemotaxis, Jimmie Marquette Smith Sep 1987

Signal Processing In Bacterial Chemotaxis, Jimmie Marquette Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study localized 1) the site of ATP utilization in the signal transduction pathway of bacterial chemotaxis and 2) the point of convergence of the methylation-independent systems of chemotaxis with the methylation-dependent system. The site of ATP utilization was localized at the CheY protein/switch point. In an Eaeheriehia call strain (BT3077) containing the cheY, motor and switch genes, ATP depletion, accomplished by treating the cells with arsenate, suppressed the CheY protein-induced tumbling. ATP was not required by the switch for directing the clockwise and counterclockwise rotations of the flagellar motor. ATP did not appear to be required for normal steady-state …

Decrease In Selected Temperature After Intracranial Dopamine Injections In Goldfish, Hercules Theodore Panayiotides-Djaferis Aug 1987

Decrease In Selected Temperature After Intracranial Dopamine Injections In Goldfish, Hercules Theodore Panayiotides-Djaferis

Dissertations and Theses

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) (40-80g) were injected with dopamine into the forebrain to study the possible involvement of this amine in central temperature regulation in these fish. Dopamine caused a decrease in selected temperature after injection into the rostral nucleus preopticus periventricularis (NPP). This effect was dependent on the dose of dopamine administered. Doses of 25, 50, 100 and 250 ng were used, injected in a volume of 0.2μ1. Injections in regions adjacent to the NPP elicited hypothermic effects only at the higher dosages. These effects were not consistent. Injections in caudal regions of the NPP elicited no effect. …

Distribution Of Vertebrates Of The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Stanley H. Anderson, Wayne A. Hubert, Craig Patterson, Alan J. Redder, David Duvall

Great Basin Naturalist

During a survey of the vertebrates in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, 46 mammal, 210 bird, 9 reptile, 5 amphibian, and 28 fish species were found. Habitat structure and moisture were two environmental variables associated with species numbers across this 1,820-ha area. Eight distinct habitats were evaluated. In coniferous forests, 27% of the birds and 54% of the mammals were observed. Sagebrush/grasslands and upland shrublands were very arid and had relatively few vertebrates. Five introduced game birds occurred in sagebrush habitat. Riparian and wetland habitats had the largest number of unique vertebrates, 38 and 77 respectively. The establishment of …

The Effect Of Body Temperature On Arteriovenous Oxygen Difference During Rest And Activity In The Toad, Bufo Marinus, Wayne Bryant Palioca Jul 1987

The Effect Of Body Temperature On Arteriovenous Oxygen Difference During Rest And Activity In The Toad, Bufo Marinus, Wayne Bryant Palioca

Dissertations and Theses

The relative contribution of arteriovenous oxygen (A-V O2) difference to thermally-induced and activity-induced changes in metabolic rate (VO2) were delineated in the toad, B. marinus. In conjunction, the influence of rest and activity, temperature, and removal of the pericardial sac on separation efficiency (Es) in the anuran ventricle was determined by direct measurement of arterial and venous percent oxygen saturation (% saturation), using a microsampling technique.

Quantitation Of Teratogenic Effects Of 5-Fluorouracil Administered To Mice In Vivo Or In Submerged Limb Culture, Theresa A. Sanders May 1987

Quantitation Of Teratogenic Effects Of 5-Fluorouracil Administered To Mice In Vivo Or In Submerged Limb Culture, Theresa A. Sanders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrates the use of submerged limb culture in teratologic testing. Pregnant mice were treated on day 11 of gestation (E11, plug date = E0) with 10, 20 or 40 mg of 5-fluorouracil (FU) per kg body weight. On E17, treated and untreated fetuses were examined for gross malformations and were fixed in 95% ethanol. Reduction of limb size and digital defects, including ectrodactyly (ED), syndactyly (SD), microdactyly and polydactyly were dose-dependent. In parallel studies, pregnant mice were treated on the morning of E11 and embryos were removed either 7h (E11) or 24h (E12) later for submerged limb culture. …

Adaptation Of Striped Bass To Sea Water Following Direct Transfer From Freshwater: Morphological, Biochemical, And Physiological Parameters, Judy A. King May 1987

Adaptation Of Striped Bass To Sea Water Following Direct Transfer From Freshwater: Morphological, Biochemical, And Physiological Parameters, Judy A. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been heightened interest in the biology of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) because of increased pollution in their native spawning grounds and because of their extensive use in landlocked sport fisheries. Their euryhalinity makes them an excellent species for osmoregulation studies. The objective of this research was to study the rate of adaptation of striped bass gills to sea water (3% salt) after direct transfer from freshwater using biochemical (ion transport enzyme levels), physiological (chloride efflux), and ultrastructural methods. Striped bass have specialized osmoregulatory cells located on the interlamellar and afferent surfaces of their gill filaments as shown by …

Effects Of Hematocrit Variations On Microcirculatory Hemodynamics And Oxygen Transport In Hamster Striated Muscle, Lih Kuo Jan 1987

Effects Of Hematocrit Variations On Microcirculatory Hemodynamics And Oxygen Transport In Hamster Striated Muscle, Lih Kuo

Theses and Dissertations

Experiments were performed to investigate the influence of isovolemic hemodilution and hemoconcentration on microcirculatory hemodynamics and oxygen transport in the hamster cheek pouch retractor muscle. Measurements of red blood cell velocity, microvessel hematocrit, vessel diameter, segment length (L), hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) and longitudinal SO2 gradient (ΔSO2/L) were made in four arteriolar branching orders before and after isovolemic exchange with plasma (hemodilution) or packed red blood cells (hemoconcentration).

In the study of hemodilution, systemic hematocrit was reduced from 52 to 33% in 23 hamsters. This degree of hemodilution resulted in an average decrease in microcirculatory …
