Presettlement Vegetation And Vegetational Change In Three Valleys In Central Utah, Earl M. Christensen, Hyrum B. Johnson

Historical information, survey records, and relict vegetation were used as sources of data for determining the nature of the presettlement vegetation of Pavant, Round, and Juab Valleys in central Utah. The foothills were covered with bunch grasses (principally Agropyron spicatum and Poa secunda), scattered junipers (Juniperus utahensis), and sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate). Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii) was common on level areas within the foothills. Below the foothill region on the more gentle slopes and benchlands there was a broad belt dominated by bunch grasses. The grassy area intergraded into a zone dominated by northern …

Electromyographic Analysis Of The Temporal And Masseter Muscles During The Para-Retentional Period In Orthodontic Patients, Thomas L. Thompson

This study was initiated to compare electromyographically the activity of the masseter and temporal muscles during the early retentional period in orthodontic patients. Electromyographic recordings were taken at the following times: (1) before typical edgewise appliance was removed, (2) at time of retainer insertion, (3) after eight to twelve weeks of retainer wearing, and (4) one day following occlusal equilibration. Electromyograms from the orthodontic group of subjects were compared with electromyograms from a group of subjects with normal occlusion, and a group of subjects with untreated Class II, Division 1 malocclusions. Influence Of Sodium And Calcium Chlorides In The Nutrient Solution On Secretions Of Salt Glands Of Tamarix Species, Don L. Chadwick

Salt glands are an adaptation for living in saline habitats possessed by several species of plants. In the family of Plumbaginaceae at least three mangrove genera, Aegialitis, Aegiceras, and Avicennia, possess salt glands according to Scholander (1962). Salt glands of the small ornamental shrubs, Statice gmelini, and Limonium latifoluim of the same family, were studied by Ruhland (1915) and Arisz (1955). Spartina townsendii of the Graminaceae and Tamarix petandra, Tamarix hispida, and Tamarix aphylla of the Tamaricaceae families also have the glands.

Bitter pit is a physiological disorder of apples which causes considerable wastage of otherwise sound fruit .
It is a problem of world-wide occurrence and in Western Australia growing conditions appear particularly favourable for its development.

A WELL-KNOWN South-West apple orchard with an impressive cropping record is owned by W. F. & E. M. Dilley and Sons, of Upper Capel, near Donnybrook.
Trees in this orchard have been producing consistently heavy crops for many years and, furthermore, yields have increased steadily over a 10-year period.
