The Accuracy Of A Post-Exercise Heart Rate Determined By Electronic Monitoring And Radial Artery Palpation Following Swimming Exercise, Jonathan Kevin Kessel Jan 1990

The Accuracy Of A Post-Exercise Heart Rate Determined By Electronic Monitoring And Radial Artery Palpation Following Swimming Exercise, Jonathan Kevin Kessel

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate through electronic monitoring whether immediate post-exercise heart rates determined in an erect position are an accurate representation of heart rates achieved during swimming exercises performed in the prone position. In addition, a comparison was made to determine what differences, if any, existed between immediate post-exercise heart rates determined by radial palpation and immediate recovery heart rates determined by electronic monitoring.

Fourteen male and four female members of the Eastern Illinois University Swim Program volunteered to be subjects.

Each of the subjects swam eight lengths of the pool (200 yds.) at approximately 60-70 …

Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Electromyographic, And Rpe Responses To Isotonic Versus Isokinetic Exercise Performed On The Monark And Fitron Bicycle Ergometers, Patrice Annette Keil Jan 1990

Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Electromyographic, And Rpe Responses To Isotonic Versus Isokinetic Exercise Performed On The Monark And Fitron Bicycle Ergometers, Patrice Annette Keil

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if any differences exist in relative efficiency of the subjects when riding a Monark bicycle ergometer as compared to a Fitron bicycle ergometer ridden at the same work rate. This efficiency was determined from levels of oxygen consumption, exercise heart rates, ratings of perceived exertion, blood pressure, and electromyographic recordings of four right leg muscles during exercise bouts on the two different bicycle ergometers.

Seventeen apparently healthy male subjects aged 42 to 78 years performed two tests, one on the Monark bicycle ergometer and one on the Fitron bicycle ergometer. Each test …

Radio Transmitter Attachment For Chukars, Bartel T. Slaugh, Jerran T. Flinders, Jay A. Roberson, M. Ray Olson, N. Paul Johnston

Great Basin Naturalist

Thirty-seven Chukars (Alectoris chukar), fitted with conventional poncho-type radio transmitters, were released on Antelope Island in Utah's Great Salt Lake. Twenty-seven removed their radios, averaging three days after release. The remaining 10 died from predation (average 15 days). Twenty-two Chukars with pleated and six with harness ponchos were then released. Five of the pleated ponchos were removed (average four days), and 17 resulted in mortality (average two days). All six harness poncho-equipped birds were dead the following day. A consequential laboratory study comparing various attachment methods (conventional, pleated, harness, and "irreversible" flange poncho vs. bellystrap and wingstrap backpack) …

Hourly Fluctuation Of Middle Ear Pressure As A Function Of Age In School-Age Children, Susan Hogue Henry Oct 1989

Hourly Fluctuation Of Middle Ear Pressure As A Function Of Age In School-Age Children, Susan Hogue Henry

Dissertations and Theses

Tympanometry is a useful means of evaluating the status of the middle ear. For the pediatric population, tympanometry is particularly valuable for determining the presence of middle ear effusion. The test has been incorporated in many school hearing conservation programs because of its ease of administration, objectivity, and diagnostic value.

In a study by deJonge and Cummings (1985), the hourly fluctuation of middle ear pressure was reported in a group of kindergarten-age children. The variability of middle ear pressure for that group of children averaged 150 daPa. In the present study, a maturational effect of this hourly fluctuation was observed …

Changes In Caloric Content As A Result Of Sub-Lethal Stress In Neanthes Virens (Sars), Phyllis J. Friello

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Neanthes virens were subjected to a toxicity test with 1.8, 3.4, 6.7 and 11.0 mg/1 Cd2+. Worms were withdrawn on Days 1, 4, 7, 10 and 14 from each of five replicate tanks and their caloric content determined by bomb calorimetry. Analyses of variance and covariance showed no significant differences in worm caloric content with withdrawal day or cadmium concentration.

In a second experimental series, a sediment toxicity test with Neanthes virens was conducted in contaminated sediments from two sites, as well as reference sediments from a control site. Caloric content of the worms was measured by bomb …

Embryonic Chicken Fibroblast Collagen Binding Proteins: Distribution, Role In Substratum Adhesion, And Relationship To Integrins, Roy C. Ogle, A. Jeannette Potts, Marchall Yacoe, Charles D. Little Oct 1989

Embryonic Chicken Fibroblast Collagen Binding Proteins: Distribution, Role In Substratum Adhesion, And Relationship To Integrins, Roy C. Ogle, A. Jeannette Potts, Marchall Yacoe, Charles D. Little

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications

Collagen binding proteins (CBP) are hydrophobic, cell surface polypeptides, isolated by collagen affinity chromatography. Antibodies to CBPs inhibit the attachment of embryonic chicken heart fibroblasts to native type I collagen fibrils in a dose-dependent manner. The CBP antibodies also induce rounding and detachment of cells adherent to a planar substratum. This process of antibody-mediated substratum detachment resulted in a clustering of CBP and cell-associated extracellular matrix at the cell surface, and the rearrangement of filamentous actin. Other functional studies showed that cells grown within a three-dimensional gel of type I collagen cannot be immunostained at the cell surface with CBP …

Spectroscopic Study Of Decomposition Products Of Gossypol, David Bernard Hankins Jul 1989

Spectroscopic Study Of Decomposition Products Of Gossypol, David Bernard Hankins

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Basic research into reproductive physiology has begun to identify possible new approaches to controlling fertility. Gossypol, a natural polyphenol compound isolated from cottonseed oil, has been shown to be an effective male antifertility agent. The decomposition products of gossypol which are thought to possess more potent antifertility effects than the parent compound gossypol have been studied extensively in more recent research. The purpose of this research is to develop techniques and methods which could be used to identify decomposition products of gossypol. A model decomposition reaction by which a smaller molecule can be isolated in a pure state has been …

Mounting Sex Pheromone: A Novel Pheromone Responsible For Mate Recognition In The Ixodidae, Jgc Hamilton Jul 1989

Mounting Sex Pheromone: A Novel Pheromone Responsible For Mate Recognition In The Ixodidae, Jgc Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Cholesterol oleate was demonstrated to be the cuticular contact sex pheromone of Dermacentor variabilis. This pheromone which has been termed the Mounting Sex Pheromone (MSP) was also demonstrated to be present on the surface of D. andersoni, Amblyomma maculatum and A. americanum. This contact sex pheromone enables males excited and attracted by 2,6-dichlorophenol to identify the female as a potential mating partner. The MSP is the second in the series of three sex pheromones guiding the hierarchy of behavioral responses which constitute tick courtship behavior. Tests with D. variabilis and D. andersoni showed that this pheromone …

Amino Acid Uptake And Metabolism By Larvae Of The Marine Worm Urechis Caupo (Echiura), A New Species In Axenic Culture, William Jaeckle, Donal T. Manahan Jun 1989

Amino Acid Uptake And Metabolism By Larvae Of The Marine Worm Urechis Caupo (Echiura), A New Species In Axenic Culture, William Jaeckle, Donal T. Manahan

Scholarship

Axenic (bacteria-free) larval cultures of the marine echiuran worm, Urechis caupo, were reliably obtained by aseptically removing gametes directly from the gamete storage organs. Trochophore larvae only removed neutral amino acids from seawater as measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). There was no detectable uptake, as measured by HPLC, of acidic or basic amino acids. Kinetic analysis showed that the transport system for alanine in 4-day-old larvae had a Kt of 4-6 μM and a Jmax of 9-10 pmol larva-1 h-1. Following a 50-min exposure, the majority of the radio-activity (95%) from 14 …

Enhancement Of Intratumor Antibody Distribution With A Bifunctional Antibody Delivery System And With Hyperthermia, Karen Lynn King Jun 1989

Enhancement Of Intratumor Antibody Distribution With A Bifunctional Antibody Delivery System And With Hyperthermia, Karen Lynn King

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The intratumor distribution of a new monoclonal antibody-hapten-based delivery system was examined. From two marine antibodies, Hybritech, Inc. has developed a bifunctional antibody (BPA) with specificities against CEA (ZCE-025 or GEM 231) and against one of two derivatives of [111In]-benzyl-EDTA (CHA 255), EOTUBE or BLEDTA IV, to form ZCE/CHA or CEM/CHA. BFA accumulates in CEA-expressing tissue and clears from non-antigenic tissues prior to administration of an [111In]-hapten.

Using five groups of nude mice bearing human colon tumor xenografts (T380), we evaluated different carriers of [111In]-EOTUBE to prelocalized ZCE/CHA. We administered all antibodies and haptens …

Regulation Of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Synthesis By Retinoic Acid And Dexamethasone, Kerby C. Oberg Jun 1989

Regulation Of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Synthesis By Retinoic Acid And Dexamethasone, Kerby C. Oberg

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Fetal rat lung (FRL) cells incubated in the presence of retinoic acid or dexamethasone exhibit altered 125I-epidermal growth factor (EOF) binding capacity. Retinoic acid enhances 125I-EGF binding 3-fold following 24 hours of 37° incubation. In contrast, FRL cells incubated in the presence of dexamethasone display a 2-fold reduction in 125I-EGF binding capacity. The change in binding capacity, induced by either hormone, was due to alterations in the average number of receptors per cell as determined by Scatchard analysis of 125I-EGF binding. In the absence of retinoic acid or dexamethasone, FRL cells were calculated to have approximately …

Autonomic Nervous System And Cholesterol Transport, Yuan-Line Hung Jun 1989

Autonomic Nervous System And Cholesterol Transport, Yuan-Line Hung

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of autonomic nervous system on cholesterol transport is of clinical interest because the relationship between lipoprotein metabolism and atherogenesis is expressed in coronary artery disease.

Generally speaking, beta blockers increase serum VLDL level but decrease both HDL and HDL2 cholesterol levels without affecting the LDL in humans. We are unaware of reports concerning the effects of metoprolol on lipoprotein metabolism nor comparison of the effects of metoprolol and propranolol in the unhandled rat model. In part I we employed the unhandled rats to compared the effects of these 2 drugs administered with the drinking water in order …

Maternal And Fetal Responses To Long-Term Hypoxemia In Sheep, Benjamin L. Siu May 1989

Maternal And Fetal Responses To Long-Term Hypoxemia In Sheep, Benjamin L. Siu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of acute or short term hypoxia on fetal and maternal cardiovascular hemodynamics has been well known, however, little is known about the effect of long term hypoxemia. To determine the animals hemodynamic responses to this stress we studied 3 groups of animals 1) pregnant ewes (n=20) 110 to 115 days of gestation, subjected to hypoxia for up to 28 days, 2) pregnant ewes (n=4) which served as normoxic controls, and 3) non pregnant ewes (n=6) subjected to hypoxemia for up to 28 days. We measured maternal and fetal mean arterial pressure (Bp), heart rate (HR), arterial PO2 …

Winter Habitats And Foods Of Blue Grouse In The Sheeprock Mountains, Utah, Peter J. Perkins, Frederick G. Lindzey, Jay A. Roberson, Gregory Mcdaniel, Randy Berger Apr 1989

Winter Habitats And Foods Of Blue Grouse In The Sheeprock Mountains, Utah, Peter J. Perkins, Frederick G. Lindzey, Jay A. Roberson, Gregory Mcdaniel, Randy Berger

Great Basin Naturalist

Winter habitat use and food habits of Blue Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) were studied in an isolated Utah desert mountain range that contained little typical Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) winter habitat. Habitat use was concentrated in the Douglas-fir and pinyon (Pinus edulis)–juniper (Juniperus spp.) habitat. Douglas-fir and pinyon pine were the most consumed foods. Other foods that represented >15% of the composition of an individual fecal sample were limber pine (Pinus flexilis), mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifoliu), juniper, and an Anteunaria–Cirsium type. The breadth in winter diet indicates that Blue Grouse may …

Changes In Mule Deer Size In Utah, Dennis D. Austin, Robert A. Riggs, Philip J. Urness, David L. Turner, John F. Kimball

Great Basin Naturalist

Trends in age-specific, eviscerated carcass weights were determined for hunter-harvested yearling and two-year-old buck mule deer. Carcass weights declined over an 11-year period from two areas of similar management, but with independenly collected data sets. Carcass weights also declined between the opening and second weekends of the hunt. Management implications are discussed.

Ontogenic Changes In The Rates Of Amino Acid Transport From Seawater By Marine Invertebrate Larvae (Echinodermata, Echiura, Mollusca), Donal T. Manahan, William Jaeckle, Saeid D. Nourizadeh Jan 1989

Ontogenic Changes In The Rates Of Amino Acid Transport From Seawater By Marine Invertebrate Larvae (Echinodermata, Echiura, Mollusca), Donal T. Manahan, William Jaeckle, Saeid D. Nourizadeh

Scholarship

Transport rates of amino acids were determined for larvae of different ages of the echiuran worm Urechis caupo, the gastropod Haliotis rufescens, the bivalve Crassostrea gigas, and the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. All larval forms showed an increase in the transport rate of amino acids during development. Trochophores of U. caupo increased their rate of net flux for each of 5 amino acids (100 nM each) by a factor of 1.6 and 2.2 during 1-3 days and 4-8 days, respectively, for two independent cultures. In H. rufescens, the maximum transport capacity (Jmax) …

Growth And Energy Imbalance During The Development Of A Lecithotrophic Molluscan Larva (Haliotis Rufescens), William Jaeckle, Donal T. Manahan Jan 1989

Growth And Energy Imbalance During The Development Of A Lecithotrophic Molluscan Larva (Haliotis Rufescens), William Jaeckle, Donal T. Manahan

Scholarship

Larvae of the gastropod Haliotis rufescens are classified as "nonfeeding" because they cannot capture particular foods. However, for only 1 out of 5 independent cultures was a net decrease observed in dry organic weight during the complete period of larval development (5 to 7 days). In fact, there were net increases in dry organic weight from the oocyte (day 0) to the newly formed veliger larvae (2-day-old). These weight increases during early development could be explained by increases in the amounts of specific biochemical components of the larvae, relative to oocytes. The metabolic rates of larvae were measured (oxygen consumption) …

The Physiology And Biochemistry Of Isolated Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria : A Comparative Study, Mark Lowell Wagner Jan 1989

The Physiology And Biochemistry Of Isolated Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria : A Comparative Study, Mark Lowell Wagner

Dissertations and Theses

The physiological limit to maximum aerobic capacity (VO2max) in vertebrates has been attributed to cardiovascular oxygen delivery, to the ability of the muscle cells to consume oxygen, or to a fine-tuned development of all components of the respiratory system such that no single component can be shown to limit VO2max. The above hypotheses have each been developed using different experiments with different animals. The comparative studies uniting these animals and methods are limited. In order to further our knowledge of the cellular limit to VO2max, skeletal muscle mitochondria were isolated from species representing four …

Nitrogen And Iron Interactions In Filamentous Cyanobacteria, David Allen Hutchins Jan 1989

Nitrogen And Iron Interactions In Filamentous Cyanobacteria, David Allen Hutchins

Dissertations and Theses

The investigations described in this paper are an attempt to further define and quantify the interrelationship of nitrogen fixation and iron nutritional physiology in these two species. Chapter II will present and compare data on nutritional ratios of field collected Trichodesmium colonies and laboratory Anabaena cultures, with the intent of examining possible correlations between observed iron levels and protein nitrogen and chlorophyll concentrations, as well as nitrogen fixation rates. Chapter Ill is an examination of nitrogen fixation and siderophore production in Anabaena with emphasis on the possible implications of hypothesized synergistic effects of these two physiological capabilities on cyanobacterial dominance …

The Prenatal Development Of The "Synaptic" Structures In The Guinea Pig Pineal Gland, Zhongrong Luo Dec 1988

The Prenatal Development Of The "Synaptic" Structures In The Guinea Pig Pineal Gland, Zhongrong Luo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Pineal "synaptic" ribbons are a heterogeneous population of organelles. In addition to "synaptic" ribbons (SR) sensu stricto, which are electron-dense rods, "synaptic" spherules (SS) and intermediate forms (IMF) are present. The SS are electron-dense spherical structures, the diameter of which is two to three times the width of the SR. The IMF appear as irregularly formed structures. The SR, SS and IMF are surrounded by electron-lucent vesicles. Their function and origin are unknown and also a knowledge of their prenatal development is lacking. In order to gain an insight into the development of the "synaptic structures, the pineal glands …

Effect Of Dietary Factors On Mutagenesis, Metabolism, And Binding To Dna Of Benzo [A] Pyrene And Benzo [A] Pyrene 7, 8-Dihydrodiol, Robin E. Vance

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Ellagic acid (EA), a naturally occurring plant phenol, at concentrations of 5 to 50 pg/plate, inhibited rat liver S9 protein dependent benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P)-induced mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA 100 by 30-81% and B[a]P 7,8-dihydrodiol (DHD)-induced mutagenesis by 29 to 75%. EA (5-40 juM) did not significantly affect the metabolism of B[a]P or B[a]P 7,8-DHD as determined by high performance liquid chromatographic analysis of the organosoluble fraction and by the quantification of watersoluble conjugates. At these concentrations EA inhibited 3 3 the covalent binding of [ H] B[a]P and [ H] B[a]P 7,8-DHD metabolites to calf thymus DNA by 5 to …

An Analysis Of Protein-Ligand Interactions For Enzyme Ii-Mannitol From Escherichia Coli, Brent Lee Wood Sep 1988

An Analysis Of Protein-Ligand Interactions For Enzyme Ii-Mannitol From Escherichia Coli, Brent Lee Wood

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Enzyme IImtl of Escherichia coli was purified from mtlA-overexpressing E. coli strain LJ1112 extraction of isolated membranes with deoxycholate, followed by hexyl agarose and ω-amino hexyl agarose chromatography in Lubrol PX. A 10-fold increase in total pure protein and 2.5-fold increase in specific activity over previously reported procedures was obtained. Tryptic fragments of Enzyme IImtl were also purified and identified as the membrane and cytoplasmic domains by protein sequencing and SDS-PAGE. The fluorescence spectrum of Enzyme IImtl suggested that two populations of tryptophan residues existed with emission maxima at 322 and 344 nm, corresponding to buried …

Age-Related Changes In Meissner Corpuscles Of Diabetic Mice As Observed By Electron Microscopy, Vicky R. Ras Sep 1988

Age-Related Changes In Meissner Corpuscles Of Diabetic Mice As Observed By Electron Microscopy, Vicky R. Ras

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Light touch and low-frequency vibration sense are often impaired in diabetic patients. Meissner corpuscles are distally located mechanoreceptors that respond to these stimuli. Peripheral sensory neuropathy in diabetes progresses from distal to proximal, therefore, Meissner corpuscles are ideally suited to study diabetic neuropathy in the C57BL/Ks (db/db) mouse.

Corpuscles from the forepaw digital pads of 9 diabetic and 9 nondiabetic littermates were studied by electron microscopy. These were divided into 3 age groups; 2.5 months, 10 months, and 17 months old.

Ultrastructural changes observed within various receptor components were myelin figures, multivesicular bodies, vacuoles, basal lamina duplication, abnormal and enlarged …
