Resonant Breathwork As Multimodal Vagal–Interoceptive Modulation: An Empirical Synthesis Of Non-Invasive Vns, Breathing-Driven Interoception And Respiratory Tools, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Resonant Breathwork is proposed as a layered, measurable intervention that modulates vagal activity and interoceptive processing through acoustic vocalization, respiratory mechanics, and biofeedback. This review synthesizes human empirical studies from 2022–2025 across five domains: (1) noninvasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation and acoustic or vocal vagal engagement; (2) interoception targets modulated by breathing; (3) respiratory rehabilitation tools, including oscillatory positive expiratory pressure and inspiratory muscle training; (4) virtual or augmented reality breath biofeedback; and (5) neuroimaging of high ventilation breathwork with music. Evidence shows taVNS can acutely increase vagal indices, with effects contingent on frequency and pulse width, while paced …

Dopamine (DA) midbrain neurons are involved in a wide array of key brain functions including movement control and reward-based learning. They are also critical for major brain disorders such as Parkinson's disease or schizophrenia. DA neurons projecting to distinct striatal territories are diverse with regard to their molecular makeup and cellular physiology, which are likely to contribute to the observed differences in temporal DA dynamics. Among these regions, the dorsolateral striatum (DLS) displays the fastest DA dynamics, which might control the moment-to-moment vigor and variability of voluntary movements. However, the underlying mechanisms for these DLS-specific fast DA fluctuations are unresolved. …

Chronic alcohol misuse is the leading cause of non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of alcohol-associated cardiomyopathy (ACM), particularly regarding sex-specific susceptibility and mitochondrial contributions, are not fully known. In this study, we utilized a preclinical model of chronic + binge ethanol consumption to investigate sex differences in disease severity and mitochondrial function. Male and female C57BL/6J mice were fed ethanol or control liquid diets for 30 days, with 2 binge episodes on days 10 and 30. Sixty-three young males (mean age: 21.3 ± 2.1 years; body height: 183 ± 6.5 cm; body weight: 77 ± 9.3 kg) were enrolled in the study. The Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted the higher education sector worldwide in several disciplines, especially those in healthcare as well as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) that require active, experiential learning via practical application of concepts centered around physiology. Dynamic instructional and technological interventions took place rapidly in an effort to minimize the adverse repercussions of moving away from traditional means of education in these critical scientific fields.
