GYRAFALCONS, PRAIRIE FALCONS. Of great interest are reports again this season of Gyrafalcons in Nebraska. At least three confirmed sightings were reported by knowledgeable individuals. First, Gary and Jackie Ohman, of Battle Creek, sighted an immature gray phase male Gyrafalcon about 3 miles west of Thedford, Thomas Co., on 25 September 1979. On 11 November 1979 I observed an immature male gray phase Gyrafalcon about 12 miles southwest of Minden, Kearney Co. I was able to approach as close as20 feet from the bird in my car. Athird reported sighting occurred in early December 1979 about 4 miles west of …

The Seventy-Ninth Annual Meeting Jun 1980

The Seventy-Ninth Annual Meeting

Nebraska Bird Review

The Seventy-ninth Annual Meeting was held at the 4-H Camp in the Bessey Division of the Nebraska National Forest, near Halsey, 17 and 18 May, 1980. The attendance at this meeting was 73, compared to "seventy-odd" at the 1973 meeting and 87 at the 1970 meeting, both held at the Camp. The formal program, which was held to a minimum to maximize the time available for birding consisted of demonstrations of bird banding by Hazel and Fitzhugh Diggs of Hamburg, Iowa, and Ruth Green of Bellevue, and at the annual banquet a slide-illustrated talk by David Griffiths, of Pueblo, Colorado, …

1979 Christmas Count Mar 1980

1979 Christmas Count

Nebraska Bird Review

Ninety-nine species (four less than last year) were reported in the 1979 Christmas Count, and one species was reported present but not seen on the count. (There was no such species reported last year.) This drop was in spite of one more count - from Kearney - this year. The number of additional races reported - three - was the same as last year. The individual count this year was 188,102 compared to 90,000 last year, and most of the increase was due to the Snow Goose and Mallard counts along the Missouri River, which in turn was due to …

Twenty-One Years Of Say's Phoebes, Doris Gates

Nebraska Bird Review

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lindeken live 10.5 miles northeast of Chadron, Nebraska, in a home with a big picture window over the kitchen sink, a window that faces the Sheridan Gates, a formation which is in Sheridan County across the Dawes County line. Outside the window is a small platform on which Say's Phoebes have nested for many years.

The first year the Lindekens were aware of Say's Phoebes was in 1958 when a pair nested in the garage, a building which is attached to the house. The birds were "messy" but they were allowed to remain through the summer. …

Observations Of Late Fall Migratory Sandhill Cranes, Platte River, Nebraska, John G. Aronson Mar 1980

Observations Of Late Fall Migratory Sandhill Cranes, Platte River, Nebraska, John G. Aronson

Nebraska Bird Review

Observations of migratory Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) were made on the Platte River near Kearney, Nebraska. On 26 November 1978, night roosting in the Platte River occurred on thin ice (less than 2 cm) in open areas which were protected by riparian vegetation from cold north winds (35-40 km/hr-NNW, -10°C). Roosting Cranes were spaced very closely (less than 0.5 m) during evening and early morning hours, with increased spacing (about 1.0 m) occurring during late morning. A diagram of the roost area was prepared. The roost was located near the northern river bank in a river stretch characterized …

A Ground Dove At Desoto Nwr, Loren Padelford, Babs Padelford

Nebraska Bird Review

A Ground Dove was sighted at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge on 18 November 1979, for about ten minutes around 11 AM, in the hedgerows opposite the entrance to the nature trail, south of the swimming beach.

It was a small dove, only slightly longer but chunkier than Tree Sparrows sitting in the same small tree. There was gray scalloping on the head and breast, the eye was dark, the beak light colored at the base, with the rest appearing dark. The wing was grayish with black speckling from shoulder to tip. We noticed a short tail when the bird was …

Nongame Birds Of The Rocky Mountain Spruce- Fir Forests And Their Management, Kimberly G. Smith Jan 1980

Nongame Birds Of The Rocky Mountain Spruce- Fir Forests And Their Management, Kimberly G. Smith

T.W. "Doc" Daniel Experimental Forest

Spruce-fir forests in the Rocky Mountains consist mainly of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. The breeding avifaunas in these forests show remarkable consistency in composition along a latitudinal gradient from Montana to Arizona and New Mexico, and with avian communities in the Hudsonian life zone in Washington, Oregon, and California. Woodpeckers, corvids, and seed-eating finches are the most common components. Only the Golden Eagle and a few other raptors are threatened or endangered. Few species winter in these high mountain forests. The distribution of many species is controlled primarily by the vegetation physiognomy, a variable under the control of the …

Analyses Of Illinois Wild Turkey Habitat And April Foods, Kim D. Price Jan 1980

Analyses Of Illinois Wild Turkey Habitat And April Foods, Kim D. Price

Masters Theses

A vegetative analysis of turkey habitat was conducted in Alexander, Jackson, Union, and Calhoun Counties, Illinois. From these studies it was determined that turkeys inhabit relatively open stands of timber with agricultural fields and forest clearings in close proximity. Species of Quercus comprise approximately 40% or more of the tree species sampled, with Q. alba, Q. rubra, and Q. velutina being the most dominant. Found growing in association with Quercus are species of Carya, Cornus florida, Acer saccharum, Sassafras albidum, Fraxinus americana, and Ulmus rubra, in varying concentrations. The examination of food …

Evaluation Of Potential Wild Turkey Habitat In Eastern Illinois, Cara B. Daugherty Jan 1980

Evaluation Of Potential Wild Turkey Habitat In Eastern Illinois, Cara B. Daugherty

Masters Theses

Reestablishment of the wild turkey has been successful in the southern part of Illinois where large established tracts of woodland occur. However, turkeys are capable of surviving in areas with less forest cover, if food, nesting materials and protection are available. This project evaluated the potential turkey habitat of a 14-county area of eastern Illinois along the drainage of the Wabash River. Six potential release sites were selected and the habitat evaluated. In these areas, oak (Quercus spp.) and hickory (Carya spp.) were the dominant tree species. Disturbance from human populations was determined in each of …

Coccidian Parasites Of Wild Turkeys, Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris, In Illinois, D. Michael Watkins

Masters Theses

Fecal samples from 124 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris), collected in three southern Illinois counties, were examined for coccidia. Three and two tenths percent (4) of the birds sampled were infected with Eimeria of apparently four different species. These species were tentatively designated as: E. meleagridis, E. adendeides, E. meleagrimitis and E. subrotunda.

Effects Of Strain On Response Of Laying Hens To Low Protein Diets And Amino Acid Supplements, Ali B. Kashani Jan 1978

Effects Of Strain On Response Of Laying Hens To Low Protein Diets And Amino Acid Supplements, Ali B. Kashani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corn is by far the most widely used cereal grain in the United States for poultry feeding. In addition to its high energy content, corn provides adequate amounts of the essential fatty acids for maximum rates of growth and egg production. Palatability and ample xanthophyll and provitamin A contents of fresh corn are some o the other contributing factors for its popularity in livestock feeding. The most serious limitation in the nutritional value of corn as well as other cereal grains lies in the fact that they are low in both quantity and quality of protein. It has been a …
