Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Heat stress is a major environmental challenge in poultry production that reduces growth, welfare, and immune function. As global temperatures rise, understanding how genetic selection influences responses to heat stress (HS) is critical for sustainable production. Broilers selected for low water conversion ratio (LWCR) represent a potential strategy for improving resource efficiency; however, their immune response capabilities under HS remain unclear. This study evaluated the effects of cyclic HS on hematological parameters and immune function in LWCR and modern random-bred (MRB) broilers. Birds were reared under thermoneutral conditions (24 °C) or exposed to cyclic HS (36 °C for 8 h …

Evaluation Of Limestones Varying In Calcium Solubility On Egg Production Performance And Total Tract Calcium Retention In Lohman Lsl Lite Laying Hens, R. L. Drysdale, P. L. Utterback, Benjamin Parsons, J E. Emmert, C. M. Parsons

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Limestone is one of the primary sources of Ca in poultry diets because it is often readily available and inexpensive. The amount and availability of Ca in limestone can vary due to factors such as the origin of the rock, particle size, and solubility. It is believed that larger particles that solubilize at moderate or slow rates may be advantageous by limiting Ca-phytate interactions and increasing retention time of particles in the gastrointestinal tract, which would lead to better utilization of Ca by the bird. There were 5 limestones evaluated with 2 dietary Ca levels fed per limestone (2.65 and …

Differences In Cytokine Mrna Expression At The Site Of Primary And Secondary Vaccinations With Herpesvirus Of Turkeys (Hvt) In Egg-Type Chickens., Allie Bowerman

2026 Research Poster Competition

Marek’s disease, a lymphoma causing virus, remains a major concern in poultry production systems. Although vaccination with live herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT) is crucial for controlling this disease, information on how the vaccine drives local/tissue immune responses that lead to protective immunity is limited. Using the growing feather (GF) in vivo bioassay, we assessed local cytokine mRNA expression following primary and booster intradermal (i.d.) HVT vaccinations in egg-type chickens. For this, six 9-week-old and six 19-week-old Light-brown Leghorn (LBL) pullets were i.d. injected into the pulp of growing feathers (GF; 10 µL/GF; 16 GFs/bird) with a primary (V1) or secondary …

Effect Of Chronic Heat Stress On Duodenal Epithelial Barrier Integrity In Low- And High-Water-Efficient Broiler Chickens, Lulu Liu, Elizabeth S. Greene, Brooklee Roach, Sara Orlowski, Sami Dridi

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Heat stress (HS) has long posed a significant challenge to the poultry industry due to its adverse effects, such as depressed feed intake, decreased growth performance, and increased water consumption. Water efficiency (WE, conversion of water intake into body weight gain), although often neglected, is a key economic and production trait that is significantly affected by HS. Recently, we selected two broiler lines for high WE (HWE) and low WE (LWE) and showed a differential hypothalamic expression of genes involved in water homeostasis regulation. As the gut also plays a significant role in water absorption, the present study aimed to …

Gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli have an outer membrane that contains lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which is a powerful inducer of systemic inflammation. It is often associated with gut dysbiosis, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and liver damage. Despite increasing recognition of the gut-liver axis as a critical mediator in systemic inflammation and hepatic pathology, the efficacy of nutritional strategies targeting this pathway remains inadequately defined. This study evaluated the protective effects of zinc glycine (Zn_Gly), a highly bioavailable organic zinc chelate, against LPS-induced gut barrier disruption and liver damage in meat geese. Zn_Gly supplementation @ 80mg/kg of diet significantly attenuated LPS-induced impairments in …
