Effects Of Dietary Nigella Sativa Supplementation On Growth Performance, Lipid Profile, Carcass Traits, And Immune Response Of Broiler Chickens During Summer And Winter Seasons, Zahida Jabeen, Roheela Yasmeen

Journal of Bioresource Management

The poultry industry is a major agro-based sector in Pakistan and an important source of meat protein. Nigella sativa (black cumin/kalonji) has gained attention as a natural feed additive because of its antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and growth-promoting properties. This study evaluated the effects of dietary Nigella sativa seed supplementation on growth performance, feed conversion ratio (FCR), lipid profile, and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens under summer and winter conditions. A total of 120 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments, with 60 birds per treatment and three replicates of 20 birds. The control group received a basal …

Comparative Assessment Of Growth And Morphometric Characteristics In Naked Neck, Rhode Island Red, And Black Australorp Chickens, Naseer Ahmad, Sarzamin Khan, Rafi Ullah, Kamran Khan

Journal of Bioresource Management

This study investigated growth performance and morphometric characteristics in three chicken genotypes namely Naked Neck (NN), Rhode Island Red (RIR), and Black Australorp (BAL). One-hundred and eighty chicks (age, day-old), comprising 60 birds from each genotype, were distributed randomly into three replicates per group, with 20 chicks per replicate, under a completely randomized design. Birds were reared on deep litter for 18 weeks. Hatch weights were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in BAL (30.7 g) and RIR (30.2 g) compared to NN (28.2 g). Body weights showed no significant differences (P > 0.05) from weeks 2 to 4, but BAL and RIR outperformed NN (P < 0.05) from weeks 6 to 10. BAL maintained the highest body weight from weeks 12 to 18 (P < 0.05). Total weight gain (0-18 weeks) was significantly greater in BAL (1567 g), followed by RIR (1491 g) and NN (1219 g). The genotypes had significant effects on both feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR; P < 0.05). At 18 weeks of age, FCR was most efficient in BAL (3.53), followed by RIR (3.83), and NN (4.85). Mortality between weeks 4 and 18 was lowest in NN at 1.7 %, compared with 1.81 % in RIR and 1.84 % in BAL. Significant differences (P < 0.05) among genotypes were also observed in morphometric characters such as shank length, keel length, and breast circumference, with BAL generally showing larger measurements. In conclusion, BAL exhibited superior growth, feed efficiency, and morphometric characteristics, while NN demonstrated lower weight gain but better survivability, highlighting genotype-specific advantages for different production goals.

Review On Exploring The Potential Of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens) As A Novel Feed Ingredient For Poultry, Muhammad Naeem Jan, Nasir Rajput, Muhammad Naeem, Sher Ali, Ghulam Shabir Barham, Tehseen Fatima Miano Sep 2025

Review On Exploring The Potential Of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens) As A Novel Feed Ingredient For Poultry, Muhammad Naeem Jan, Nasir Rajput, Muhammad Naeem, Sher Ali, Ghulam Shabir Barham, Tehseen Fatima Miano

Journal of Bioresource Management

Poultry provides both direct and indirect employment opportunities to individuals. Every farm owner desires a reduced investment with more earnings. Over 50 % of the overall cost of chicken rearing is allocated to feed stuff. Among all feed ingredients, protein sources are the most expensive, yet protein is essential for production and growth. This exorbitant price cannot be sustained by the small-scale farmers. Consequently, contemporary scientists are attempting to substitute the protein supply with black soldier fly in their formulations. This review study examines the advantageous effect of utilizing Black Soldier Fly powder, larvae or oil, as demonstrated in scientific …

Effect Of Curcuma Longa On Growth And Lipid Profile Of Broiler Chickens Across Seasons, Sehrish -, Roheela Yasmeen Sep 2024

Effect Of Curcuma Longa On Growth And Lipid Profile Of Broiler Chickens Across Seasons, Sehrish -, Roheela Yasmeen

Journal of Bioresource Management

The poultry sector plays a critical role in driving economic growth and meeting the protein needs of the population. Recently, natural additives like turmeric (Curcuma longa) have attracted attention for their antimicrobial properties and their potential to reduce the reliance on antibiotics in poultry feed. This study evaluated the effects of turmeric supplementation at varying concentrations on broiler chickens during winter and summer seasons. Over a 42-day period, 40 broilers were divided into four groups: Control, Experimental Group 1 (1% turmeric), Experimental Group 2 (1.5% turmeric), and Experimental Group 3 (2% turmeric). Vaccination against Newcastle Disease (ND) and …

Journal of Bioresource Management

The present study was conducted to compare the performance and behavior of Fayoumi and Rhode Island Red poultry breeds. A total of forty-two birds at 26 weeks of age, with thirty-six females and six males from each breed, were distributed into 6 groups with one male and six females each. All the experimental groups were reared in separate partitions with provisions of nests, feeders, and drinkers under proper management conditions. The results of the current study revealed that Rhode Island Red chickens showed significantly higher (P < 0.05) body weight, egg weight, daily egg production, eggshell thickness, and other quality parameters compared to Fayoumi chickens. It was also noted that Rhode Island Red chickens consumed less feed and gained heavier bodies with higher egg production than Fayoumi chickens. There was a non-significant difference in feed intake between both breeds. Rhode Island Red chickens produced eggs with better shell quality and higher breaking strength compared to Fayoumi chickens. In conclusion, the Rhode Island Red chicken breed is better in terms of body weight, egg performance, and feed efficiency compared to Fayoumi chickens.

Vultures And Kites From Marala Wetlands, Zahid Bhatti, Fida Muhammad Khan, Muhammad Asif Gondal

Journal of Bioresource Management

The family Accipitridae consists of approximately 254 known living species that include eagles, hawks, vultures and kites. Forty species from this family are extant in Pakistan, of which 24 are resident. Only six species from the Accipitridae family were observed at Marala Head; Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), Pariha Kite (Milvus migrans), White-Backed Vulture (Gyps bengalensis), Long-billed Vulture (Gyps indicus), Shikra (Accipiter badius) and Black-Winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus). The highest number of any species from this family observed was of Gyps bengalensis (23) in December. Elanus caeruleus was the …

Rehabilitation Of An Injured Golden Eagle (Aquila Chrysaetos): A Case Study, Fida Muhammad Khan, Fakhar-I- Abbas, Abu Ul Hassan Faiz

Journal of Bioresource Management

Habitat destruction and anthropogenic activities cause wild birds to migrate towards urban areas in search of food and sometimes nesting in high-roof buildings, where they are caught by local people using different techniques and are further used for hunting or recreational purposes. An injured Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) was found entangled in bushes near the vicinity of Balkasar Research Complex, Chakwal, Pakistan. After complete physical examination, a wound on the right wing and closed leg fracture was diagnosed. The successful treatment was done by anti-parasitic and anti-bacterial drugs with careful monitoring. Splint was adjusted after aligning the fractured …
