Tuition Discounting Study Of Private Law Schools 2016, Accesslex Institute, National Association Of College And University Business Officers

Commissioned Research

The 2016 NACUBO/AccessLex Tuition Discounting Study of Private Law Schools was commissioned by AccessLex Institute in part to provide more recent information on tuition discounting practices at law schools, and to measure the effects of discounting on law schools’ finances. The use of institutional grant aid to attract and retain law students has become even more important, as many programs have had to grapple with declines in their numbers of applicants and enrollments. This challenging context has prompted law schools to implement a variety of practices and policies to raise their enrollments, including increasing their financial aid expenditures. The data …

Collaborative Relationships Between Law Librarians And Legal Writing Faculty, Susan Azyndar, Ingrid Mattson Oct 2017

Collaborative Relationships Between Law Librarians And Legal Writing Faculty, Susan Azyndar, Ingrid Mattson

Journal Articles

From the Introduction

How would you characterize the professional relationship between law librarians and legal writing faculty in your law school? Satisfying? Productive? Fraught? Nonexistent? Given law schools’ great demands on these groups’ time and talents and the ABA’s increased emphasis on experiential skills, law librarians and legal writing faculty should strive to develop a meaningful dialog. In this way, each group will better understand what the other can provide in terms of expertise, and the two groups can develop a mutually beneficial work dynamic.

Increasing Diversity By A New Master's Degree In Legal Principles, Joni Hersch Oct 2017

Increasing Diversity By A New Master's Degree In Legal Principles, Joni Hersch

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Students who leave their JD program before graduation leave empty handed, without an additional degree or other credential indicating that their law school studies had any professional, educational, or marketable value. The absence of such a credential combines with the substantial risks and costs associated with law school education to discourage risk averse students from applying. The adverse impacts of these risks may be especially great for lower income students who have fewer financial resources to draw on and less information about their fit with legal education and the legal profession. I propose that law schools award a master’s degree …

Reimagining The Wheel: Using Circular Calendars For Planning In Law School Libraries, Susan Drisko Zago Sep 2017

Reimagining The Wheel: Using Circular Calendars For Planning In Law School Libraries, Susan Drisko Zago

Law Faculty Scholarship

This essay proposes using a wheel or circular calendar to identify and document the events and projects of an academic law school year, both in and out of the classroom. The idea of harnessing the natural cyclical process of law school for library planning comes from concept mapping, which can conceptualize an issue by using a variety of mapping strategies to organize and show the relationships between pieces of information and a central concept. Using a wheel graphic to visualize a process can facilitate project management and aid in teaching legal research strategy.

International Perspectives On Privacy And Free Expression: Concepts, Conflicts, Consequences, University Of Michigan Law School Sep 2017

International Perspectives On Privacy And Free Expression: Concepts, Conflicts, Consequences, University Of Michigan Law School

Event Materials

This conference contributes to the energetic and transnational dialogue currently going on about privacy: How do we define it? Is it a right, an interest, a value, or something else? Privacy against what? Privacy from whom? Is privacy necessarily in tension with free expression? Or is it often an essential predicate to it? How have different political regimes answered these questions? How do entities and individuals navigate those conflicting transnational approaches?

This is the program for the conference.

Eying The Body: The Impact Of Classical Rules For Demeanor Credibility, Bias, And The Need To Blind Legal Decision Makers, Daphne O’Regan

Pace Law Review

This Article focuses on law students and attorneys, not parties, witnesses, experts, and others. Part I briefly provides background: the pivotal role of classical rhetoric in western education, including the United States, the dispositive position of demeanor credibility in oral trial, and the persistent doubts about its reliability—doubts turned into certainty over two decades of research. Part II compares modern and ancient manuals to explain the rules of elite demeanor and its ideological claim to truth. Part III compares ancient and modern understanding of popular delivery; that is, choices in non-verbal communication that run counter to the elite rules and …
