Paying Dividends: An Empirical Examination Of How Student Compensation Enhances Externships, Neha Lall
Paying Dividends: An Empirical Examination Of How Student Compensation Enhances Externships, Neha Lall
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Externships provide impactful experiential education opportunities that enable law students to acquire the skills, networks, and self-awareness they need to launch their legal careers. Since 2016, the American Bar Association (“ABA”) has allowed students to receive compensation in addition to credit in field placement courses. Despite the increasing popularity of paid externships, questions linger about whether law schools can maintain high quality learning experiences when students are on the placement’s payroll. In the first empirical examination of its kind, this Article analyzes a carefully curated four-year dataset detailing externship program enrollment, evaluation, and student demographic data from one school, The …

From Classroom To Courtroom: Understanding Real Pathways Into Legal Careers, Timothy S. Troxel
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This study examines how legal professionals describe their preparation for legal and law-adjacent careers, with the goal of identifying practical guidance for college students entering the field. Existing literature on legal career preparation often emphasizes measurable qualifications, while offering broad or generalized advice. At the same time, research on career development highlights the importance of experiential learning and mentorship, suggesting a gap between formal guidance and lived experience. To explore this gap, this study conducted interviews with ten legal professionals across a range of roles and experience levels. Participants were asked about their backgrounds, career paths, skill development, and other …

Rethinking Legal Education: Demystifying Neurodiversity And Building An Inclusive Future, Jennifer Kindred Mitchell, Charlie Amiot
Rethinking Legal Education: Demystifying Neurodiversity And Building An Inclusive Future, Jennifer Kindred Mitchell, Charlie Amiot
The Journal of Law Teaching and Learning
This article contributes significantly to the discourse on legal education by arguing that embracing neurodiversity not only enhances the learning environment for all students but also cultivates a legal profession that is truly reflective of societal diversity. Ultimately, neurodiversity should be embraced as an asset. By adopting inclusive practices, legal education can nurture the promise of ND students and improve outcomes for all. This article seeks to inspire a new paradigm that celebrates neurocognitive diversity’s contributions to the legal profession.
Neurodivergent (ND) students comprise approximately a quarter of the law school population, yet traditional legal education often fails to meet …

Education Theory Integrated In Business Law, Robin Boyle-Laisure
Education Theory Integrated In Business Law, Robin Boyle-Laisure
Faculty Publications
Education theorists have identified three pedagogical techniques that enhance student learning and retention of knowledge, namely, scaffolding, interleaving, and schema-building. These techniques help students transfer knowledge from short-term to long-term memory, where it is best retained for future use. Scaffolding involves part-task sequencing and whole-task sequencing. By interleaving tasks, professors present steps out of order or new material before the prior material is fully understood. Assisting students in developing schemas can help them store their knowledge in long-term memory. This article explains and explores these techniques as applied in an undergraduate business law course. The appendices provide detailed exercises that …

Incorporating Ai Into The Contract Drafting Process: A Classroom Exercise, Kristen V. Hardy
Incorporating Ai Into The Contract Drafting Process: A Classroom Exercise, Kristen V. Hardy
UF Law Faculty Publications
I recently read the Three Blind Drafts: An AI-Generated Classroom Exercise, by Margie Alsbrook and Ashley Chase. I was trying to create an AI-related assignment for my spring contract drafting class. The article inspired me to attempt a conceptually similar assignment in an AI contract drafting exercise. This article will summarize Alsbrook’s and Chase’s original idea and describe how I adapted it for the contract drafting classroom; the student outcome; and my thoughts about what I would do differently the next time I attempt the assignment.

This past summer, when I attended my third AALL Conference, I signed up to review a program for the ALL-SIS newsletter. I agreed to report on “AI in Law Libraries: Discussing Ethical Considerations and a Way Forward.” I had attended numerous presentations over three years, but this was the first time I analyzed a program in depth. I needed to make detailed notes about what the participants said, as well as what questions were asked and how the speakers responded to them. Then, I had to synthesize my notes and turn them into an effective program review, about 500-700 words …

Writing a fact pattern is more challenging than it looks. This is something I learned when I created my first fact pattern for Advanced Legal Research. To accomplish this, I relied on the maxim, “Write what you know.”

Understanding Public Domain Case Citations, Joshua Levine
Understanding Public Domain Case Citations, Joshua Levine
Library Staff Online Writings
I first learned about public domain citations after law school, when I was working on a fifty-state survey. I was completely used to parentheticals that included the deciding court and the year of decision, so I couldn’t understand the examples I found from certain states. I thought that surely something was missing from these citations!
