Reimagining The Philosophy Of Evaluation, Assistance, And Certification (Eac) Project: The Ials Model Reform In Legal Education, Sreejith S.G. Sep 2020

Reimagining The Philosophy Of Evaluation, Assistance, And Certification (Eac) Project: The Ials Model Reform In Legal Education, Sreejith S.G.

St. Mary's Law Journal

In 2017, the International Association of Law Schools (IALS) launched its Evaluation Assistance and Certification (EAC) Project. The Project, essentially meant to enable law schools to raise themselves to international standards in legal education, has not only advanced the work of IALS but also broadened its mandate, giving IALS a new philosophy and outlook. The renewed philosophy of IALS is a philosophy of ambition, solidarity, self-becoming, and the pursuit of excellence. This article, after conceptualizing the modalities of the Project, examines that philosophy, exploring the impact it will have on law school performance and on legal education at large. Finally, …

Online Advocacy: Views From A Moot Coach, Siyuan Chen Sep 2020

Online Advocacy: Views From A Moot Coach, Siyuan Chen

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Taking part in an international moot court competition can be one of the most exciting things a law student can do. Months are spent bunkering down with team mates and coaches analysing, researching, producing written submissions on a wide range of issues that seldom have obvious answers; more months are spent refining the oral submissions before they are presented to the judges at the competition. Mooters never had to grapple with the prospect of presenting the arguments using an online platform. The most recent coronavirus changes that. In this piece, I identify some of the issues and drawbacks of making …

The Year Of Covid-19: Personal Reflections On How Traditional Pedagogy Can Be Informed By Online Teaching Methods (Aka How I Changed My Mind About Online Teaching), Ee-Ing Ong

Reflections on lessons learnt during online teaching during COVID-19. Despite the difficulties of the term, I realized that online teaching had certain strengths that traditional face-to-face teaching formats lacked. This started me on the path to adapting online teaching practices to improve our current modes of teaching, such as using online tools to improve interactivity, and reduce bias in interacting with students. I also started reconsidering whether our traditional classroom structures are indeed the best way to teach. While my experiences are based on teaching law, I believe that these points are also applicable to teaching in other disciplines.

A Name Change May Be A Start, But It Is Not Enough, Leah D. Williams Aug 2020

A Name Change May Be A Start, But It Is Not Enough, Leah D. Williams

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

Since the broadcast killing of George Floyd by four Minneapolis police officers on May 25, all levels of government, and institutions of every kind, have scrambled with breakneck speed to confront their own ties to America’s most deeply entrenched demons: White supremacy and systematic racism. Washington and Lee has certainly not been exempt from this reckoning. A majority of its faculty and student body have already passed resolutions calling for the removal of Robert E. Lee’s name from the university. As a direct descendent of those enslaved by the school, I commend these resolutions; yet, I strongly offer that a …

What Will (Or Might?) Law School Look Like This Fall?: Teaching In The Midst Of A Pandemic, Ted Becker Aug 2020

What Will (Or Might?) Law School Look Like This Fall?: Teaching In The Midst Of A Pandemic, Ted Becker

Articles

January 2020 marked the start of a new semester for Michigan law schools. There was little reason to suspect it wouldn’t be a semester like any other: for 3Ls, the start of the stretch run to graduation; for 1Ls, a chance to begin anew after the stress of their first set of law school final exams; for law school faculty, administrators, and staff, a return to the excitement and activity of crowded hallways and classrooms after the brief interlude of winter break. Classes began and proceeded as normal.

What Does The Digital Revolution Mean For Legal Education?, Emma Ziercke, Dirk Hartung, Klaus-Stefan Hohenstatt Aug 2020

What Does The Digital Revolution Mean For Legal Education?, Emma Ziercke, Dirk Hartung, Klaus-Stefan Hohenstatt

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The general consensus amongst legal thought leaders is that legal education needs to be re-designed to, amongst other things, reflect the digital transformation of the legal industry. This opinion exposes the long-standing tension between academic learning and vocational learning in the legal profession. Technology cannot be ignored, but where to begin? What do lawyers actually need to know about technology? To answer this question, we have to understand what it means to “be a lawyer” in the twenty-first century. Technology is multi-dimensional and encompasses lawyers as users of technology, as advisers for new legal issues that stem from the application …
