Humanistic, And Paticularly Classical, Studies, As A Preparation For The Law, Harry B. Hutchins May 1907

Humanistic, And Paticularly Classical, Studies, As A Preparation For The Law, Harry B. Hutchins

Michigan Law Review

Aside from the elementary branches, no particular subject is absolutely essential as a basis for the study and practice of the law. In this respect the law occupies a place somewhat different from that of the other learned professions. The student and practitioner of medicine must of necessity get a substantial scientific foundation for his professional work. This for him is an absolutely essential prerequisite. For the professional courses in engineering, a special and definite scientific preparation must be made. Without it nothing but the most ordinary work in engineering can be accomplished. And it is probable that for theology, …

The Opportunities And Responsibilites Of American Law Schools, Floyd R. Mechem Mar 1907

The Opportunities And Responsibilites Of American Law Schools, Floyd R. Mechem

Michigan Law Review

With two bodies dealing in general with the subject of legal education, the Section of Legal Education and this Association, meeting annually, and with occasionally a third, the Conference of State Boards of Law Examiners, each endeavoring to present papers and arouse discussion, it is obvious that the number of new questions which anyone may hope to suggest is necessarily, small. Most of the important questions have already been discussed, many of them more than once, and anything which is now presented is likely to smack of the truism or the platitude. The very remarkable increase, however, both in the …

Franklin Henry Bryant (1907), Rebecca Ciota Jan 1907

Franklin Henry Bryant (1907), Rebecca Ciota

Black History at Colorado Law

Born in 1877 and troubled from a young age by lung problems,19 Franklin Henry Bryant (1907) dedicated himself to his education. In 1898, he joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church, where he served as a stenographer for the son of the founders of the Seventh Day Adventists, J. Edson White.

Bryant traveled across the country with the Adventists. After suffering an injury to or illness in his face, he traveled to Battle Creek, Michigan, for treatment, where the Adventist Sanitarium workers received him poorly. J. Edson White and his brother W.C. White interceded on Bryant’s behalf, and Bryant moved …

Founding Of The College Of Law Of The Ohio State University, Horace Lafayette Wilgus

Articles

It is proper for me to say, in the beginning, that I have been delegated to bear, and I have the honor to present to the College of Law of the Ohio State University, upon this occasion the sincere congratulations and most hearty good wishes of the largest University Law School in the United States--the Department of Law of the University of Michigan. In addition to this, it is with much satisfaction, and is a very great personal pleasure, that I have the privilege of joining in the festivities of this dedication of the beautiful Temple of Themis, wherein the …

Should Men Bearing The Same Title In Any Institution Receive The Same Pay?, Harry B. Hutchins Jan 1907

Should Men Bearing The Same Title In Any Institution Receive The Same Pay?, Harry B. Hutchins

Other Publications

I suppose that there is at the present time in most universities discrimination to a limited extent between men holding the same title. In some cases it is based upon length of service; in others, it is made in favor of men who perform extra duties. Sometimes, moreover, special endowments lead to discriminations. And occasionally the salary of a man is fixed above that of his associates in order to retain his services when he has been called at an increased salary by another university. Sometimes, also, special and exceptional circumstances put a man in a different class from that …

Function Of The State University Law School, Andrew Alexander Bruce Nov 1906

Function Of The State University Law School, Andrew Alexander Bruce

Michigan Law Review

It is only where there is law that there is liberty, and where there is law there must be lawyers. In the countries where the lawyers are the fewest liberty is at the lowest ebb, an the dignity of the individual least regarded. Even if the modern industrial system should undergo a change, and the dream of the socialist were to be fulfilled, there would still be a demand for the legal arbiter, interpreter and counsellor, for socialism in its last analysis is merely a system under which human conduct and activity is everywhere sought to be controlled and regulated …

Selected Cases On The Law Of Negotiable Instruments, Robert E. Bunker Jan 1906

Selected Cases On The Law Of Negotiable Instruments, Robert E. Bunker

Books

The cases appearing in this volume have been selected primarily for the use of students pursuing the study of Negotiable Instruments and particularly for students in the Law Department of the University of Michigan. They are arranged in order to conform to the plan of instruction now pursued in that Department. The plan to which reference is made is sufficiently indicated by the Table of Contents infra. In brief, it involves a study of the law of Negotiable Instruments on the basis of the contract of the several parties as that law has been declared by the courts and, …

Law As A Culture Study, Edson R. Sunderland Jan 1906

Law As A Culture Study, Edson R. Sunderland

Articles

That acute observer and commentator on American institutions, James Bryce, in an oft-quoted statement in his American Commonwealth, pays a high tribute to the efficiency of American law schools. "I do not know if there is anything," he writes, "in which America has advanced more beyond the mother country than in the provision she makes for legal education." In passing this generous judgment, in which many other eminent Englishmen have concurred, he views our law schools simply as institutions for developing technical proficiency among students destined to fill the ranks of the legal profession. And this is, indeed, the principal …

Thomas Mcintyre Cooley, Harry B. Hutchins Jan 1906

Thomas Mcintyre Cooley, Harry B. Hutchins

Articles

The Department of Law of the University was opened in the fall of 1859. The wisdom of the step was doubted by many, and it cannot be said to have had the hearty support of the profession of the State. Systematic legal education through the instrumentality of formal instruction was in its infancy. It was practically unknown in the west, for outside of New England and New York there was at the time no law school of standing and influence. The profession generally, the country over, had little sympathy with any method of training for the bar excepting the historic …
