A Feasibility Study Of Aircraft Mechanics Program And Flight Training At Spokane Community College, Kenneth Gaylord Brown

This paper was designed to study the flight-training program of the aviation department at Spokane Community College and its relationship to mechanics employability. Questionnaires were designed to sample the mechanic-employer relationship in regard to mechanics with flight experience to determine whether this experience was an advantage or detriment to the aircraft mechanic seeking employment.

Recommendations proposed were expansion of the existing flight program at Spokane Community College and the practicality of adoption of flight training by similar schools.

The Four Horsemen, Tim Brady

From 1956 until 1960, the Air Force's Tactical Air Command (TAC) fielded a team of four C-130 Hercules pilots to perform as an aerial demonstration team. The shows thrilled audiences around the United States and the pilots, known as the Four Horsemen, showed the power and maneuverability of the huge airlifters also known as troop carriers. The aircraft used in the demonstrations were taken from the inventory of whatever air base was closest to the show.

In 1958, as part of Operation Jingle Bells, a Hercules C-130, ferrying cargo and personnel to the United States from the Far East, encountered weather and abbreviated their flight into Langley. Little Rock Air Force Base was chosen as the alternative landing site. Getting the C-130 down onto the ground proved to be challenging when the controls for the trim system did not operate correctly. A study is made of biorhythm charts and aircraft accidents at TAC. In one 3-year span, 1969-1972, covering 59 accidents, 13 of those accidents occurred on a "critical biorhythmic day" and 40% of the total accidents happened when at least one of the pilots involved had two or more biorhythmic cycles in the minus portion. All accidents are preventable and all people are accident preventers. Understanding why accidents happen and that they are sometimes caused by human error is one area that needs continued study to determine how to reduce accidents.

SPRAYING cereal crops for weed control is now standard farming practice in Western Australia. Almost 500,000 acres of cereal crops, mainly wheat, are sprayed each year, and approximately three-quarters of this area is treated by aircraft.

Recent trials have shown that aerial application of 'extra low" volumes of hormone-like herbicides, with oil or water solvents, does not damage cereals if spraying is done at the right stage of growth.
