Application Of Active Noise Control To Reduce Cabin Noise In Single Engine General Aviation Aircraft, Jeroen Hendrik Dolmans

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The application of active noise control to reduce cabin noise in single engine, general aviation aircraft is investigated through the use of the 'filtered x' least mean square algorithm and a simple acoustic feedforward method to generate a reference signal is tested. The system is designed to utilize one reference signal and up to two feedback signals and two audio speakers. The feedforward system consists of a microphone placed in close proximity to the front windshield and isolated from the cabin noise. Cabin noise and reference signals are recorded during flight in a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, a Piper Cherokee 140 …

Estimating Kc-137 Aircraft Ownership Costs In The Brazilian Air Force, Ulisses O. Bonasser Jun 1997

Estimating Kc-137 Aircraft Ownership Costs In The Brazilian Air Force, Ulisses O. Bonasser

Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses the estimation of operation and support (O&S) costs of the Brazilian Air Force KC-137 aircraft. BAF lacks an established set of procedures for computing ownership costs of such aircraft, which prejudices the elaboration of cost-benefit analysis and allocation of budget resources. The purpose of the study is to develop an O&S cost breakdown structure and a set of cost estimating equations that will be used to estimate the ownership costs of the KC-137 aircraft during their expected service life.

The Highly-Automated Airplane: Its Impact On Aviation Safety And An Analysis Of Training Philosophy, Kuo K. Liu Jun 1997

The Highly-Automated Airplane: Its Impact On Aviation Safety And An Analysis Of Training Philosophy, Kuo K. Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Two Airbus accidents at Nagoya, Japan and Toulouse, France in April and June 1994 highlighted the problem of the highly-automated airplane and its interface with pilots. As technologies in the engineering design progress so quickly in airplane automation, training philosophies toward the 'glass cockpit' may need to be re-evaluated. Many pilots, young and old, praise the advantages brought by the new technology. On the other hand, many have complained about the increasing workload and the danger of automation features which are not in their control. In this thesis, I evaluate the accidents of the highly-automated airplane and the probable solutions …

Structural Design Of A Crashworthy Energy Absorbing Passenger Seat For A Large Transport Aircraft Using Large Displacement, Nonlinear Material Finite Element Analysis, Javier Fuentes May 1997

Structural Design Of A Crashworthy Energy Absorbing Passenger Seat For A Large Transport Aircraft Using Large Displacement, Nonlinear Material Finite Element Analysis, Javier Fuentes

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Federal Aviation Regulations certification criteria for transport aircraft seats require performing dynamic tests using anthropomorphic test dummies. Floor decelerations of the tests are 16g forward with the seat tracks misaligned by up to 10 degrees and 14g downward at a pitch angle of 30 degrees. In this project the dynamic response of the passenger/seat/restraint system is modeled using nonlinear finite element analysis. The interference between a dummy model and the seat is modeled using a contact interaction algorithm. This algorithm did not converge and multiple-point constraints were used to transfer the dummy's inertia load. This approach was validated with the …

The Design And Experimental Optimization Of A Wingtip Vortex Turbine For General Aviation Use, Andrew Roberts Apr 1997

The Design And Experimental Optimization Of A Wingtip Vortex Turbine For General Aviation Use, Andrew Roberts

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

A wingtip vortex turbine (WVT) is an induced drag reduction device that straightens the vortex flow (reducing induced drag and wake turbulence) and also produces a thrust force component. The WVT also has the advantage of extracting the rotational energy of the vortex to turn a generator, which could be used to power onboard applications during normal or emergency flight operations. A 1/4-scale model of a thrust-producing WVT has been designed and tested in a wind tunnel for optimal drag reduction and power generation for general aviation aircraft — specifically, a Piper Cherokee — in both a stationary and a …

Simulation Model Of Fighter Pilot Assignment Process, Anthony J. Hutfles Mar 1997

Simulation Model Of Fighter Pilot Assignment Process, Anthony J. Hutfles

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the effect Continental United States (CONUS) Time on Station (TOS) has on filling critical rated assignments. A SIMSCRIPT II.5 simulation model of the F15 and F16 pilots assignment process was developed. The simulation tested the effect of changing CONUS TOS from 3 years to 6 years in half year increments. Analysis of the number of unfilled rated assignments from simulation runs of 10 years in length indicated that changing CONUS TOS by itself has no statistically significant effect on model's output. The analysis was expanded to a 2(2) factorial experimental design using CONUS TOS and Total Active …

The Effects Of Elevator Rate Limiting And Stick Dynamics On Longitudinal Pilot-Induced Oscillations, Patrick J. Peters Mar 1997

The Effects Of Elevator Rate Limiting And Stick Dynamics On Longitudinal Pilot-Induced Oscillations, Patrick J. Peters

Theses and Dissertations

This report presents the results of an investigation into the effects of elevator rate limiting and stick dynamics on longitudinal pilot-induced oscillations (PIO). A simulation study was conducted to prepare for the flight test, but also to gain insight into the effects of rate limiting and stick dynamics. Due to the non-numerical nature of the simulation results, a flexible three-phase flight test plan was developed, first varying the rate limits, then varying the stick dynamics, and finally flying a matrix determined in the first two phases. There were three major conclusions. First, the offset landing task flown was insufficient to …

Determining The Economic Plausibility Of Dual Manifesting Reusable Launch Vehicles And Reusable Orbital Transfer Vehicles For The Replenishment Of Military Satellites, Crystal L. Evans Feb 1997

Determining The Economic Plausibility Of Dual Manifesting Reusable Launch Vehicles And Reusable Orbital Transfer Vehicles For The Replenishment Of Military Satellites, Crystal L. Evans

Theses and Dissertations

Currently, the Air Force launches military satellites on expendable launch vehicles to low earth orbit (LEO), and with the use of a chemical upper stage or an apogee kick motor, moves the satellite to a higher orbit. This launch procedure is extremely costly because it requires additional launch preparations, technology considerations, equipment, and fuel. Also, the additional mass of the chemical upper stage causes a larger, and thus more expensive, launch vehicle to be required. An economical alternative is to utilize reusable launch vehicles (RLVs) and reusable orbital launch vehicles (ROTVs). This concept could possibly achieve even greater savings if …

Analysis Of Aircraft Sortie Generation With Concurrent Maintenance And General Service Times, Daniel V. Hackman Feb 1997

Analysis Of Aircraft Sortie Generation With Concurrent Maintenance And General Service Times, Daniel V. Hackman

Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of this study was to develop an analytical methodology for evaluating an aircraft sortie generation process. The process is modeled as a closed network of general service queues with a fork join node to model concurrent servicing. The model uses the Mean Value Analysis (MVA) algorithm and general queueing network analysis by decomposition to approximate network performance measures including resource utilization and the overall sortie generation rate. The results of the study show that the analytical approximation's accuracy decreases as server utilization increases. However, when server utilization is kept in realistic ranges, the approximation is very accurate. …

Analysis Of Small Airports Within A One Hundred And Twenty Mile Radius Of Medium And/Or Large Airports, Cheryl Mitchell Cunningham

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this research is to investigate how income, population age, scheduled air carrier services, and distance between competing airports impact annual scheduled passenger enplanements for airports in smaller communities. Small airports located within a 120 miles radius of larger sized (medium or large) airports are considered to be within the "shadow" of larger airports with which they must compete for passenger enplanements.

Two methods were employed to evaluate shadow airports within a 120 mile radius of larger airports. First, an historical view, analyzing each of the airports with regard to schedule passenger enplanements, median disposable incomes, median ages, …

Detection Of Fatigue Crack Growth In A Simulated Aircraft Fuselage, Michael Lee Marsden Oct 1996

Detection Of Fatigue Crack Growth In A Simulated Aircraft Fuselage, Michael Lee Marsden

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Acoustic emission (AE) nondestructive testing can detect fatigue cracks as they occur in complex structures. One use for AE has been in-flight detection of fatigue cracks in aircraft. The KC-135 aircraft were successfully monitored as early as 1979. The main problem with this and subsequent applications was an unfavorable signal to noise ratio, the key being to separate the small amplitude crack signals from the large amplitude ambient noise. This was accomplished here through the use of a Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) neural network.

In order to simulate a fuselage undergoing fatigue, a pressure vessel was constructed from a 0.040 …

Using the prototype as a requirements baseline for the ITI-ALC system, this thesis had three objectives: to perform an …

Identifying Situational Constraints To Focus Quality Improvement In An Air Force Aerial Port, Timothy J. Pettit Sep 1996

Identifying Situational Constraints To Focus Quality Improvement In An Air Force Aerial Port, Timothy J. Pettit

Theses and Dissertations

This research analyzes the effects of situational constraints on individual performance within an Air Force Aerial Port squadron. Situational constraint research originated with laboratory studies by Peters and O'Connor in 1980 and was investigated in an Air Force field environment in 1984; mixed results were obtained. Laboratory studies identified direct performance inhibitors (Peters et al., 1980); however, field studies found little correlations with job performance (Kane, 1981; O'Connor et al., 1984a). Data collected in June 1995 (Dougherty, 1995) and March 1996, in this study, were used to accomplish a longitudinal analysis. Correlations between constraints and performance were also low in …
