Cubesat Adcs Validation And Testing Apparatus, Jacob Stevens Dec 2016

Cubesat Adcs Validation And Testing Apparatus, Jacob Stevens

Honors Theses

The WALI team at Western Michigan University requested a test environment to validate their CubeSat’s de-tumbling control system and hardware. The test environment required a Helmholtz cage and spherical air bearing. The Helmholtz cage provides an adjustable magnetic field to simulate low earth orbit; the spherical air bearing simulates the friction free environment the CubeSat will experience in space. In conjunction, the two components create an adjustable system that simulates a satellite in low earth orbit.

Autonomous Formation Flying And Proximity Operations Using Differential Drag On The Mars Atmosphere, Andres Eduardo Villa Jun 2016

Autonomous Formation Flying And Proximity Operations Using Differential Drag On The Mars Atmosphere, Andres Eduardo Villa

Master's Theses

Due to mass and volume constraints on planetary missions, the development of control techniques that do not require fuel are of big interest. For those planets that have a dense enough atmosphere, aerodynamic drag can play an important role. The use of atmospheric differential drag for formation keeping was first proposed by Carolina L. Leonard in 1986, and has been proven to work in Earth atmosphere by many missions. Moreover, atmospheric drag has been used in the Mars atmosphere as aerobraking technique to decelerate landing vehicles, and to circularize the orbit of the spacecraft. Still, no literature was available related …

A Solution To The Circular Restricted N Body Problem In Planetary Systems, Jay R. Iuliano Jun 2016

A Solution To The Circular Restricted N Body Problem In Planetary Systems, Jay R. Iuliano

Master's Theses

This thesis is a brief look at a new solution to a problem that has been approached in many different ways in the past - the N body problem. By focusing on planetary systems, satellite dynamics can be modeled in a fashion similar to the Circular Restricted Three Body Problem (CR3BP) with the Circular Restricted N Body Problem (CRNBP). It was found that this new formulation of the dynamics can then utilize the tools created from all the research into the CR3BP to reassess the possibility of different complex trajectories in systems where there are more than just two large …

Formation Flight Of Earth Satellites On Low-Eccentricity Kam Tori, Christopher T. Craft Mar 2016

Formation Flight Of Earth Satellites On Low-Eccentricity Kam Tori, Christopher T. Craft

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of Earth satellite constellation and formation flight is investigated in the context of Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory. KAM tori are constructed utilizing Wiesel’s Low-Eccentricity Earth Satellite Theory, allowing numerical representation of the perturbed tori describing Earth orbits acted upon by geopotential perturbations as sets of Fourier series. A maneuvering strategy using the local linearization of the KAM tangent space is developed and applied, demonstrating the ability to maneuver onto and within desired torus surfaces. Constellation and formation design and maintenance on KAM tori are discussed, along with stability and maneuver error concerns. It is shown that placement of satellites …

Orbital Resonances In The Vinti Solution, Laura M. Duffy Mar 2016

Orbital Resonances In The Vinti Solution, Laura M. Duffy

Theses and Dissertations

The Vinti Solution offers a more accurate model than the two-body problem as an orbital propagator. Unfortunately, the Vinti solution contains small divisors near orbital resonances in the perturbative terms of the Hamiltonian, which lead to inaccurate orbital predictions. One approach to avoid the small divisors is to apply transformation theory. The methodology of this research is to identify the perturbative terms of the Vinti Solution, perform a coordinate transformation, and derive the new equations of motion for the Vinti system near orbital resonances. The analysis in this research focuses on the 2:1 resonance, which includes the Global Positioning System. …

Specifically, SOS will use Global Positioning System (GPS) position estimates for on-board orbit de- termination. Currently, SOS will use the Simplified General Perturbations-4 (SGP4) algorithm as its …

Short Duration Missions To Earth Crossing Asteroids, James B. Millar Iii Mar 2016

Short Duration Missions To Earth Crossing Asteroids, James B. Millar Iii

Theses and Dissertations

My investigation of the Near Earth Object (NEO) catalog has led to identification of numerous short duration, under 40 days, mission opportunities in the future for three different mission types: uncrewed fly-by, uncrewed arrival, and crewed arrival. 2-body propagation techniques were used to model the orbits of various asteroid candidates and the Earth to determine when a close approach would occur. Once the dates were calculated, distance between the bodies was computed to estimate the ∆V to complete the mission. From the mission ∆V values, a possible mission duration was also computed. The values were analyzed to determine the best …

Computation Of Hypersonic Flows With Lateral Jets Using K-Ω Turbulence Model, Spatika Dasharati Iyengar

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Thermal Protection systems (TPS) are used as shields in space vehicles which encounter high heat and temperatures at the reentry altitudes. Among them, the cooling techniques and the ablative coatings are most popular. However, they have their own weight limitations. In the recent decade, another classification of TPS called the Non-Ablative Thermal Protection systems (NaTPS) have gained significance. The spike-lateral jet method is an NaTPS concept proposed for drag and heat flux reduction in hypersonic nose cones. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the effectiveness of spike-lateral jet concept at re-entry altitudes. The spike attached to the hemispherical nose has …

Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization Suite (Stops): Optimization Of Multiple Gravity Assist Spacecraft Trajectories Using Modern Optimization Techniques, Timothy J. Fitzgerald

Master's Theses

In trajectory optimization, a common objective is to minimize propellant mass via multiple gravity assist maneuvers (MGAs). Some computer programs have been developed to analyze MGA trajectories. One of these programs, Parallel Global Multiobjective Optimization (PaGMO), uses an interesting technique known as the Island Model Paradigm. This work provides the community with a MATLAB optimizer, STOpS, that utilizes this same Island Model Paradigm with five different optimization algorithms. STOpS allows optimization of a weighted combination of many parameters. This work contains a study on optimization algorithm performance and how each algorithm is affected by its available settings.

STOpS successfully found …

Leveraging External Sensor Data For Enhanced Space Situational Awareness, Charlie T. Bellows Sep 2015

Leveraging External Sensor Data For Enhanced Space Situational Awareness, Charlie T. Bellows

Theses and Dissertations

Reliable Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is a recognized requirement in the current congested, contested, and competitive environment of space operations. A shortage of available sensors and reliable data sources are some current limiting factors for maintaining SSA. Unfortunately, cost constraints prohibit drastically increasing the sensor inventory. Alternative methods are sought to enhance current SSA, including utilizing non-traditional data sources (external sensors) to perform basic SSA catalog maintenance functions. Astronomical data, for example, routinely collects serendipitous satellite streaks in the course of observing deep space; but tactics, techniques, and procedures designed to glean useful information from those collects have yet to …

Earth Magnetosphere Model Investigations For Coupled Orbit-Attitude Space Debris Perturbations, Eiji Shibata, Carolin Frueh Dr. Aug 2015

Earth Magnetosphere Model Investigations For Coupled Orbit-Attitude Space Debris Perturbations, Eiji Shibata, Carolin Frueh Dr.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

As more objects are placed into orbit, collisions become increasingly more likely, leading to a so-called Kessler Syndrome: collisions between existing debris creates more debris, causing a cascading effect of larger amounts of debris being put into orbit, even in the absence of launches, making future space fairing difficult or impossible. Natural forces influence the orbit and attitude of uncontrolled debris objects. The natural plasma environment can lead to space object charging. The subsequent orbital movement in the geomagnetosphere induces Lorentz forces that act both on the orbit and attitude of the space object. Those forces have not been investigated …

Orbit Estimation Of Non-Cooperative Maneuvering Spacecraft, Gary M. Goff Jun 2015

Orbit Estimation Of Non-Cooperative Maneuvering Spacecraft, Gary M. Goff

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the ever increasing congestion of the space environment, there is an increased demand for real-time situation awareness of all objects in space. An unknown spacecraft maneuver changes the predicted orbit, complicates tracking, and degrades estimate accuracies. Traditional orbit estimation routines are implemented, tested, and compared to a multiple model format that adaptively handles unknown maneuvers. Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation is implemented in an original way to track a non-cooperative satellite by covariance inflation and filtering-through a maneuver. Parameters for successful instantaneous maneuver reconstruction are analyzed. Variable State Dimension estimation of a continuously maneuvering spacecraft is investigated. A requirements …

The Eagle Space Flight Team was created with the goal of becoming the first undergraduate team to design, build, and launch a rocket capable of suborbital spaceflight. In order to achieve this goal, the team will have to design a rocket capable of atmospheric flight at speeds over Mach 5 and launch it on one of the largest amateur rocket motors ever made. Over the next three years, the team will progress towards accomplishing this feat through a series of incremental test flights. Before the space flight, the team will build three sub-scale rockets designed to reach altitudes of 30,000’, …

A Pareto-Frontier Analysis Of Performance Trends For Small Regional Coverage Leo Constellation Systems, Christopher Alan Hinds Dec 2014

A Pareto-Frontier Analysis Of Performance Trends For Small Regional Coverage Leo Constellation Systems, Christopher Alan Hinds

Master's Theses

As satellites become smaller, cheaper, and quicker to manufacture, constellation systems will be an increasingly attractive means of meeting mission objectives. Optimizing satellite constellation geometries is therefore a topic of considerable interest. As constellation systems become more achievable, providing coverage to specific regions of the Earth will become more common place. Small countries or companies that are currently unable to afford large and expensive constellation systems will now, or in the near future, be able to afford their own constellation systems to meet their individual requirements for small coverage regions.

The focus of this thesis was to optimize constellation geometries …

Trajectory Design In The Spatial Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem Exploiting Higher-Dimensional Poincare Maps, Amanda F. Haapala Oct 2014

Trajectory Design In The Spatial Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem Exploiting Higher-Dimensional Poincare Maps, Amanda F. Haapala

Open Access Dissertations

In this investigation, the role of higher-dimensional Poincaré maps in facilitating trajectory design is explored for a variety of applications. To begin, existing strategies to implement Poincaré maps for trajectory design applications in the spatial CR3BP are evaluated. New applications for these strategies are explored, including an analysis of the natural motion of Jupiter-family comets that experience temporary capture about Jupiter, and the search for periodic orbits in the vicinity of the primary bodies in the spatial problem. Because current strategies to represent higher-dimensional maps, generally, lead to a loss of information, new approaches to represent all information contained in …

Trajectory Optimization For A Misson To The Trojan Asteroids, Shivaji Senapati Gadsing Aug 2014

Trajectory Optimization For A Misson To The Trojan Asteroids, Shivaji Senapati Gadsing

Masters Theses

The problem of finding a minimum-fuel trajectory for a mission to the Jovian Trojan asteroids is considered. The problem is formulated as a modified traveling salesman problem. Two different types of algorithms such as an exhaustive search algorithm and a serial rendezvous search algorithm are developed. The General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) is employed for finding optimum trajectories with minimal fuel consumption. The selection of a minimum-fuel mission trajectory, and the associated target asteroids, will be a key factor in determining feasibility and scientific value of a Trojan tour and rendezvous mission.

The transfer trajectory followed by a spacecraft between …

Analysis Of An Inflatable Gossamer Device To Efficiently De-Orbit Cubesats, Robert A. Hawkins Jr. Dec 2013

Analysis Of An Inflatable Gossamer Device To Efficiently De-Orbit Cubesats, Robert A. Hawkins Jr.

Master's Theses

There is an increased need for spacecraft to quickly and efficiently de-orbit themselves as the amount of debris in orbit around Earth grows. Defunct spacecraft pose a significant threat to the LEO environment due to their risk of fragmentation. If these spacecraft are de-orbited at the end of their useful life their risk to future spacecraft is greatly lessened. A proposed method of efficiently de-orbiting spacecraft is to use an inflatable thin-film envelope to increase the body's area to mass ratio and thusly shortening its orbital lifetime. The system and analysis presented in this project is sized for use on …

Investigation Into The Mitigation Of The Effects Of Uncertain Optical Degradation On An Interplanetary Solar Sail Mission Using A Single Model Update, Jordan Smiroldo Dec 2013

Investigation Into The Mitigation Of The Effects Of Uncertain Optical Degradation On An Interplanetary Solar Sail Mission Using A Single Model Update, Jordan Smiroldo

Master's Theses

The renewed academic interest in using solar sails as a source of spacecraft propulsion has been accompanied by a recent fervor of investigations into non-ideal and off-nominal sail performance considerations. One of the most influential considerations, uncertain optical degradation, has been shown to present significant trajectory design difficulties. This paper investigates the potential of using a mid-course degradation model update to mitigate the risk of missing the target destination in a sample 300 day Earth-Venus trajectory. Using a range of potential degradation profiles, it is shown that correcting in the first half of the mission is highly likely to result …

Trajectory Optimization For Spacecraft Collision Avoidance, James W. Sales Jr. Sep 2013

Trajectory Optimization For Spacecraft Collision Avoidance, James W. Sales Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The last several decades have resulted in an unfortunate byproduct of space exploration and development: orbital debris. Satellites in Low Earth Orbit have been required to make an ever increasing number of course corrections in order to avoid collisions. Despite efforts to the contrary, collisions continue to occur, each time creating additional debris and increasing the requirement for the remaining satellites to maneuver. Every required maneuver decreases a satellite's service life. The purpose of this study is to develop a minimum thrust profile to maneuver an orbiting satellite out of its projected error ellipse before a collision occurs. For comparison, …
