Orbital Maneuvers And Interplanetary Trajectory Design Via Reinforcement Learning, Roberto Cuéllar Rangel Aug 2025

Orbital Maneuvers And Interplanetary Trajectory Design Via Reinforcement Learning, Roberto Cuéllar Rangel

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This dissertation investigates the application of reinforcement learning (RL) to the design and optimization of low-thrust spacecraft trajectories, with an emphasis on autonomy, adaptability, and robustness in the presence of system uncertainties and unmodeled perturbations. Classical approaches to low-thrust trajectory design are predominantly grounded in optimal control theory, which relies on the availability of precise dynamical models and often requires problem-specific reformulation and solver tuning. While optimal control methods offer high accuracy under deterministic conditions, their sensitivity to stochastic disturbances and computational limitations in highly nonlinear or uncertain environments pose significant challenges for future autonomous space missions.

To address these …

Bifurcation Levels Of The Integral Manifolds Of The Newtonian N-Body Problem, Hannah G. Havel Jan 2023

Bifurcation Levels Of The Integral Manifolds Of The Newtonian N-Body Problem, Hannah G. Havel

CURE Proceedings

The N-body problem, first proposed by Isaac Newton, is a field of study in mathematics and physics that involves predicting the motion of particles moving under their mutual gravitational attraction. It has significance to many areas of science, including physics and computer science, and is crucial in understanding how the universe works. In fact, it was a primary motivation for Newton's development of calculus. An important application of the N-body problem is within celestial mechanics and involves how planets and other celestial bodies move with mutual gravitational attraction. It is important in developing how satellites behave in space using complicated …

Design, Development, And Testing Of Embedded Computing On Afit's Control & Autonomy Space Proximity Robot (Caspr), Collin A. Gwaltney Dec 2021

Design, Development, And Testing Of Embedded Computing On Afit's Control & Autonomy Space Proximity Robot (Caspr), Collin A. Gwaltney

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reviews RPO algorithm testbeds and discusses the development of the Control and Autonomy Space proximity Robot (CASpR) kinematic testbed housed at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). CASpR operates on a rail system to propagate the trajectories of two satellites using the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire (HCW) Equations of Motion (EOMs). In this study, the implementation of a Jetson TX2i as an onboard flight computer is discussed and accomplished. Each hardware component used in the process of adding embedded computing as well as the software and paths of communication are all discussed in detail. Tests are conducted to assess the …

Julia Language Ephemeris And Physical Constants Reader For Solar System Bodies, Julia Mihaylov, Renee Spear Oct 2018

Julia Language Ephemeris And Physical Constants Reader For Solar System Bodies, Julia Mihaylov, Renee Spear

Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott

This presentation was the forerunner a second paper by the authors for the AAS/AIAA conference in January 2019, and is not available for download. For a description of the first presentation, see the authors' Discovery Day 2018 - Presentation.

Publicly released in 2012, the Julia language is a relatively new, open source dynamic language. One major benefit of Julia is its combined capabilities of both dynamic and static coding languages. It nearly matches the computational efficiency of static languages, such as FORTRAN or C, and exceeds that of dynamic languages, such as MATLAB or Python. Additionally, unlike Python, Julia …

Optimal Coverage Of Theater Targets With Small Satellite Constellations, Axel Rendon Mar 2006

Optimal Coverage Of Theater Targets With Small Satellite Constellations, Axel Rendon

Theses and Dissertations

The daylight passes of a low-Earth orbit satellite over a targeted latitude and longitude are optimized by varying the inclination and eccentricity of an orbit at different altitudes. This investigation extends the work by Emery et al, in which the optimal Right Ascension of the Ascending Node was determined for a circular, matched inclination orbit. The optimal values were determined by a numerical research method based on Emery et al's Matlab program. Results indicate that small increases in inclination raise the number of daylight passes up to 33%. These optimal inclinations depend on the satellite semi-major axis. Eccentricity increases also …
