Seeking A Feminist Approach To Scholarly Innovations In Music Teacher Education, Andrea Maas
Seeking A Feminist Approach To Scholarly Innovations In Music Teacher Education, Andrea Maas
Visions of Research in Music Education
The marketization (Marchand & Orsorno Velázquez, 2016) of higher education impacts faculty through hiring practices, workload structures, and reappointment and promotion policies. Women faculty in fields such as music education need to negotiate masculine discourses and gendered constructions of innovation (Alsos et al., 2013) in a STEM focused economy. Values held by feminist pedagogues could serve as a framework through which to consider a more feminist approach to research and scholarship. Qualities such as equalization of power, collaboration, affective learning, inclusiveness of diversity, and social responsibility may surface through a researcher’s approach to inquiry or in the content itself. This …
Black Men Who Participate In An Urban Community College Men Of Color Initiative: A Phenomenological Study, Steven Hardy
Black Men Who Participate In An Urban Community College Men Of Color Initiative: A Phenomenological Study, Steven Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study explored the perceptions and experiences of Black men who participated in the MOCI. The study uncovered insights into what aspects of the program were effective and where improvements could be made according to the student participants. Employing a phenomenological design, the research identified commonalities among the participants' experiences (Creswell & Creswell, 2018; Moustakas, 1994; Rubin & Rubin, 2012). The structure of understanding surrounding participants in the MOCI program was meticulously facilitated using phenomenology (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). The interviews were not just semi-structured but also empathetic, with prepared open-ended questions followed by probing inquiries, all aimed at …

Cerebellopontine Angle Meningioma Mimicking Acute Stroke, Milan Terzic, Yash B. Patel
Cerebellopontine Angle Meningioma Mimicking Acute Stroke, Milan Terzic, Yash B. Patel
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Cerebellopontine angle meningiomas are slow-growing benign tumors of the brain with a largely indolent course until compressive and mass effects occur with adjacent neural structures. Clinical presentations are variable and dependent on the rate of growth and location and tend to progress over a longer period. Acute presentations are less common and require consideration of ubiquitous etiologies. A 62-year-old male with a history of hypertension, benign prostatic hyperplasia, dyslipidemia, and gout presented to the emergency department with a sudden onset of dizziness, loss of balance, and persistently elevated blood pressure. The examination was positive for left dysmetria, dysdiadochokinesia, and tandem …

Breathless Laughter: Tackling Tussive Syncope In The Shadows Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Milan Terzic, Yash B. Patel
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Cough is a common complaint in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Most cases are caused by upper airway syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, asthma, bronchitis, or infections. Complications that can be life-threatening include syncope and arrhythmias. Our case is of a 67-year-old obese male who had a chronic cough that led to syncope. The chronic cough was present for months, non-responsive to symptomatic treatment, and negative on outpatient work up with no clear common causes leading to hospitalization. After extensive imaging and cardiopulmonary work up yielding normal results, his underlying obstructive sleep apnea and therapy noncompliance was a likely cause. After …
Impact Of Frailty On Patient Morbidity And Outcomes Following Surgery For Urolithiasis: A Nsqip Analysis, David Fu, Kaeli Samson, Bryant Van Leeuwen, Andrew J. Blazek, Andrew Christiansen
Impact Of Frailty On Patient Morbidity And Outcomes Following Surgery For Urolithiasis: A Nsqip Analysis, David Fu, Kaeli Samson, Bryant Van Leeuwen, Andrew J. Blazek, Andrew Christiansen
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Background: Kidney stones are prevalent, and surgical treatment is based on multiple factors. Frailty is the collective decline of organ systems that can lead to adverse events and is considered prior to surgery for risk-benefit analysis. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) utilizes risk-adjusted data to monitor outcomes, provide quality benchmarks, and decrease complications. The impact of frailty with the modified 5-item frailty index has not previously been evaluated for patients undergoing urolithiasis procedures.
Methods: Data was collected from 1329 patients who underwent surgery for urolithiasis. The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause morbidity. Associations between variables, including those …

Barriers To Education: Limited Accessibility Of Study Material Used During Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Training, Kieran Boochoon, Andrew Yousef, Deborah Watson
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Purpose: The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) Fellowship Compendium is an extensive bibliography that serves to prepare fellows for their end-of-year board exams. Access to a current version is variable among fellowship programs. If Compendium articles—current and updated—are made directly available to fellows on the Fellows-In-Training AAFPRS website, then easier access to the preparatory exam material could improve their review of the material and their overall education. This study surveyed past AAFPRS fellows to determine the usefulness of hyperlinks to the Compendium bibliography.
Methods: AAFPRS fellows from 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 received a 9-question survey by email …

Collaborative Leadership And Student Success Perceptions Of Chief Academic Affairs & Chief Student Affairs Officers At Midwestern Private Higher Education Institutions, G. Merchel Allen Menefield
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This quasi-experimental study focused on collaborative leadership in higher education, emphasizing its potential impact on student success and career readiness. The 66 Chief Academic Affairs Officers (CAAOs) and Chief Student Affairs Officers (CSAOs) participants worked at Midwestern private higher education institutions, which were members of The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) (n.d.). The participants completed Collaborative Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaires (Turning Point, n.d.) that included a student success section, which was developed and added based on research topics presented by Kezar (2003) and Kezar and Holcombe (2020). The results showed no statistically significant differences in perceptions of collaborative leadership influencing student …
