Understanding Session Disparities And Advancing Experiential Learning In Turfgrass Management, Luqi Li Oct 2024

Understanding Session Disparities And Advancing Experiential Learning In Turfgrass Management, Luqi Li

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

PLAS 229: Introductory Turfgrass Management Laboratory is a sophomore-level course focusing on the practical skills required in turfgrass management. This portfolio documents the teaching methods, course materials, and an analysis of student learning outcomes with a focus on understanding disparities in student performance across sessions and enhancing practical skills through applied activities. Statistical analysis revealed that Session A outperformed Session B on two key field quizzes. This disparity is attributed to logistical differences: students in Session A attended the hands-on, field-based learning opportunities, while Session B faced scheduling conflicts that limited engagement with critical content. These findings underscore the importance …

Blind Grading Gives Law Schools 20/20 Vision, Amy H. Soled Oct 2024

Blind Grading Gives Law Schools 20/20 Vision, Amy H. Soled

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

There has been a big push to revamp legal education. Many have argued that after years of doing things the same way, it is time to change. While there is validity for the need for reform, educators should embrace the one thing legal education has gotten right: anonymous or blind grading. This Essay makes the case that blind grading should not only remain in legal education, but every law school course should adopt it, including writing and clinical courses. Only through blind grading can law schools better succeed in the ABA mandated goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Grades are …

The Effect Of Modality On Spirituality Outcomes In Theological Higher Education, Johnnie H. Peyton

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of this research study was to examine differences in perceptions of spirituality outcomes between online and in-person students taking theology courses at a Christian liberal arts college in the Midwestern United States. Using a validated instrument, the Religious Education Survey (RES), 71 students were surveyed. A one sample t test was used to evaluate the statistical significance of mean perceptions of spirituality between the online and in-person students. The difference in mean score perceptions of spirituality between online and in-person students was not statistically significant, and the null hypothesis was retained. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used …

Student Resources And Retention Among Transgender And Nonbinary College Students, Miriam Liss, Talyn Derflinger, Laura Wilson Oct 2024

Student Resources And Retention Among Transgender And Nonbinary College Students, Miriam Liss, Talyn Derflinger, Laura Wilson

Psychological Science Articles

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) college students are more likely to drop out of college than their cisgender peers. While robust previous literature has focused on individually experienced stressors, this paper looks at the structural supports offered by the institution. One hundred and fifty-four TNB college students were asked about the resources available on their campuses, their sense of safety on campus, and whether they intended to drop out of college. Campus resources and supports were associated with a greater sense of safety, and in turn, less of a desire to drop out of college. Some resources such as a nondiscrimination …

The Phenomenology Of Experiencing Critical Thinking In Vocational Higher Education, Sean Castleberry

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the role of critical thinking in vocational education within the Virginia Community College System by examining the lived experience of administrators, faculty, and students who are associated with vocational education. To complete this task, the researcher employed a phenomenological methodology primarily based on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and other phenomenological philosophers including Edmund Husserl, Mark D. Vagle, and Karin Dahlberg. The goal of the research was to serve as a beginning and help close the gap in knowledge concerning how critical thinking is defined in vocational education, why it is seen as an important part of …

Faculty Oer Survey 2024 - Executive Summary, James Thibeault Oct 2024

Faculty Oer Survey 2024 - Executive Summary, James Thibeault

Open Educational Resources Publications

The Fall 2024 Faculty OER survey at Bentley University indicates a growing trend of faculty awareness and involvement with OER. Faculty members have shown a significant increase in familiarity with OER, indicating successful educational efforts. However, practical challenges such as the time required to select or develop resources and concerns about resource quality remain significant barriers. Despite these challenges, there is a noticeable reduction in uncertainty about how to implement OER, with faculty increasingly recognizing the importance of library support, administrative backing, financial incentives, and education on OER benefits. Continued efforts in these areas will be crucial to further promote …

A Graceful Pedagogy: An Approach To Academic Advising Diffracted Through Love For Equitable Support Of Students Identifying As Black And Male At Two-Year Community Colleges, Ian Kelso Bodkin Oct 2024

A Graceful Pedagogy: An Approach To Academic Advising Diffracted Through Love For Equitable Support Of Students Identifying As Black And Male At Two-Year Community Colleges, Ian Kelso Bodkin

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the concept of “a graceful pedagogy” as a framework for academic advising within two-year community colleges, with a focus on supporting students who identify as Black and male. Guided by an approach rooted in diffractive methodology and inspired by bell hooks’ principles of love and engaged pedagogy, the research examines how advisors can create meaningful, equitable, and supportive relationships that account for the unique realities faced by these students. Through consciousness-raising sessions, the study captures the complexities of advising as an emotional, relational, and transformative practice. Participants engaged in intra-active dialogues of diffraction uncovering the entanglements of …

"Every Direction We Turn, It’S A Wall”: North Carolina School Counselors And Their Advocacy And Support For Undocumented Students’ Access To Higher Education, Wendy Eberhart Cook Oct 2024

"Every Direction We Turn, It’S A Wall”: North Carolina School Counselors And Their Advocacy And Support For Undocumented Students’ Access To Higher Education, Wendy Eberhart Cook

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

High school counselors in North Carolina assist with post-secondary planning for all their students, including the approximately 3,000 undocumented students who graduate from North Carolina schools each year (Zong & Batalova, 2019). Access to post-secondary education is difficult to attain for undocumented students (Groce & Johnson, 2021), especially true for undocumented students in North Carolina, a state considered hostile to this student population due to tuition and financial aid policy (Mansfield & Hernandez, 2024). Undocumented students also face a fear of deportation, food insecurity, lower socioeconomic conditions, and language barriers (Abrego, 2006).

Despite the many barriers undocumented students face, school …

Institutional Responses To The First Amendment: Inclusivity And The Protection Of Free Speech Rights On Campus, Christina Lipuma

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

This collective case study explores institutional responses to First Amendment events to determine how institutional policies impact a sense of inclusivity and the protection of free speech rights on public college and university campuses. This study identifies the practices of a sample of public, university campuses that have experienced a free speech incident to determine how the experience shaped their policies on free speech, how administrators describe their experiences following the incident, and how institutional leaders rate the outcome of their efforts in relation to balancing inclusivity in the campus environment. Due to the complex nature of public university campuses, …

Short-Semester Courses: Mitigating Unfavorable Precollege Issues For Students At A Technical College, James T. Moore Jr. Oct 2024

Short-Semester Courses: Mitigating Unfavorable Precollege Issues For Students At A Technical College, James T. Moore Jr.

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Technical colleges serve a distinct student population and provide an open access point to higher education for students not wishing to attend a university. Graduation and retention rates continue to demonstrate a gap between what technical colleges wish to achieve and the actual achievement. Technical college leaders continue to embrace policies and programs intended to support students at university system schools and which poorly serve the needs of technical college students. As a result, little is known about the lived experiences of technical college students. Data were collected through a six individual semi-structured interview. The six participants of the study …

"I Don't Want To Be Anywhere Near That Word!": The Experiences Of Jewish College Students Navigating Antisemitism, Sandra Greene

Theses and Dissertations

This comics-based research study was guided by HebCrit (Rubin, 2020) and explored the experiences of eight Jewish college students navigating antisemitism. This study was guided by four research questions including, (1) What are Jewish college students’ experiences with antisemitism?, (2) How do Jewish college students respond to personal experiences with antisemitism?, (3) How do Jewish college students respond to rising rates of antisemitism?, and (4) How does antisemitism intersect with other forms of oppression (e.g., racism, misogyny, etc.) for Jewish college students?

This study was conducted at a predominantly white and Christian university in the Southeastern United States with a …

Experiential Learning From Stakeholder Perspectives At A University Partnership Program, Maggie M. Shader Oct 2024

Experiential Learning From Stakeholder Perspectives At A University Partnership Program, Maggie M. Shader

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of this non-experimental, quantitative survey study was to determine the stakeholders' perspectives on experiential learning at Canvas College. Experiential learning has potential benefits for students as stakeholders, and internship can be a vehicle for experiential learning. Experiential learning can involve benefits such as employability, real-world experience, calling confirmation and spiritual growth, soft skills, and immediate application of learning. Stakeholders in an internship are not limited to students. Faculty and internship leaders are also stakeholders; however, a partnership program encompasses more stakeholders, including church staff, alumni, and host university staff. The survey was researcher developed and the Cronbach’s alpha …

"You Say You Want A Revolution?": Gettysburg College Students And The Turbulent 1960s, Madeleine G. Ulman Oct 2024

"You Say You Want A Revolution?": Gettysburg College Students And The Turbulent 1960s, Madeleine G. Ulman

Student Publications

Influenced by external events, major social movements, and the counterculture of the 1960s, Gettysburg College students increasingly demanded more out of their college. In the years 1963 and 1964, few students at Gettysburg College were interested in disrupting the status quo or questioning the college’s role as an authority figure. However, by 1968 and 1969, a growing number of Gettysburg College students demanded more of a voice in the college’s decision making process, fought to change unfair policies, and challenged the authority of the establishment. Some students began to organize demonstrations and protests in response to injustices they observed locally …

Ethel Bird: A College Woman's Life And Legacy From 1901 To 1905, Bryn A. Morris

Student Publications

This essay is a case study of the experiences of Ethel Bird, a middle-class student at Beloit College at the turn of the twentieth century. Through an analysis of the first-person accounts of her college life, as reported in hundreds of letters sent to her parents, the essay will expand upon previous explorations of gender and postsecondary education to examine specifically the middle-class experience, as well as how this experience led to the entry of women into the workforce. Furthermore, it will examine how Bird’s college experiences fit into the broader history of women’s education in the United States, especially …
