Stigma On Campus: The Precarious Situation Of Iranian Students At Cal Poly, November 1979, Chance Coates

The Forum: Journal of History

Exploring the ways in which the seizure of the American embassy and subsequent hostage situation of American nationals within Tehran in 1979 transcended international boundaries, this paper discusses the backlash that Iranian students at Cal Poly faced during this pivotal geopolitical crisis. The paper overall concludes that the Iranian students on campus were, like the …

Impact Of Technology On Higher Education, Gary J. Burkholder, Erwin Krauskopf

Higher Learning Research Communications

We are pleased to publish the first regular issue of Higher Learning Research Communications (HLRC), which follows the Special Issue, Implications of COVID-19 on Higher Education. Increasing in popularity, the use of narrative inquiry in qualitative research study offers a unique perspective and context in sharing lived experiences. This article utilizes a narrative inquiry study to improve the knowledge of why American Indian students have the lowest college graduation rates in the United States. These narratives helped define the barriers that have discouraged American Indian students from persisting in higher education. Predominantly, participants identified the lack of financial support, lack of cultural competency, emotional distress, time poverty, afraid to ask for help, afraid to succeed, and navigating through the college processes as barriers to their educational …

My Good Deed This Year? A Wikipedia Assignment, Shira Klein

History Faculty News Articles and Blogs

"Wikipedia assignments can double as social justice opportunities, a handy thing for faculty with young kids and any other instructors pressed for time.

For nine years now, I’ve been assigning Wiki-editing projects in my History classes. Normally, I have students find a reliable secondary source, summarize it, and incorporate it into a Wikipedia article of their choice.

This semester, I made a little tweak: I told students about some of the inequalities on Wikipedia."
