Queer Composition: A Guide To Knowing And Supporting Lgbtqia+ Students, Cara Fordenbacher Jan 2022

Queer Composition: A Guide To Knowing And Supporting Lgbtqia+ Students, Cara Fordenbacher

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Influenced by its founding in religious, white, and male-dominated power structures, higher education today still often pushes marginalized communities out of academic spaces. Across the nation the LGBTQIA+ community is being threatened with anti-gay and anti-trans bills that are being signed into effect in schools. One of the most popular being the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill passed in Florida earlier this year. The work laid out in this thesis proposal aim to combat these efforts and create spaces on university campuses where LGBTQIA+ students can go and be their authentic selves; where their voices are highlighted and celebrated. All higher …

The Sadie Alexander Project: A Professional Development Mandate For Student Affairs Professionals, Lauren Sealy Jan 2022

The Sadie Alexander Project: A Professional Development Mandate For Student Affairs Professionals, Lauren Sealy

West Chester University Master’s Theses

In this thesis, I address the lack of professional development and the absence of resources provided for student affairs professionals. By utilizing critical action research, I propose an intervention of creating a professional development mandate for all student affairs professionals called the Sadie Alexander Project. The Sadie Alexander Project uses holistic and collaborative division efforts with a focus on supporting and advocating for student affairs professionals. The proposed intervention also promotes continuous education initiatives for student affairs professionals and ensuring that institutions have up-to-date resources for students in need. I emphasize the importance of evaluating employee satisfaction and highlight the …

More Than Just A Seat At The Table: Shared Governance For Graduate Student Mentorship, Katherine Canazzi Jan 2022

More Than Just A Seat At The Table: Shared Governance For Graduate Student Mentorship, Katherine Canazzi

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Since its inception, public education in the United States has billed itself to the masses as an “equalizer” that “prepares the citizenry.” Although there are varying institutional types in higher education, Americans believe the myth that higher education is an extension of the same K-12 educational values. Despite higher education teaching the components of civic engagement separately, the skills are seldom combined for students to practice. Students do not learn how to transfer or combine these skills into their “real lives” outside of higher education. Since graduate students are electing to further their education, higher education has an increased responsibility …

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"For this study, we reviewed documentation from and about the campaign’s loudest proponents, particularly national and local leaders. We analyzed anti 'CRT' websites, toolkits, Facebook groups, and media appearances to understand their shared language, tactics, and logic. We analyzed survey and interview data from educators affected through early fall 2021, drawing on survey responses from 275 members of a set of national teacher organizations that support teachers who tend toward teaching on race and diversity, as well as an interview study of 21 'equity officers' (EOs) in district diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles across the country. We also drew …

Agroecology Curriculum Proposal, Emily Kuhn Jan 2022

Agroecology Curriculum Proposal, Emily Kuhn

Pitzer Senior Theses

The purpose of this research is to establish the viability of an Agroecology major at Pitzer College. I begin by problematizing Industrial Agriculture and making a case for Pitzer College to become a higher education leader in the global paradigm shift towards socially and ecologically just food systems. The proposed curriculum compiles pre-existing classes, objectives expanded from the EA field group, and an internship component embedded at five local land-based learning partner sites. I conducted a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis of the Environmental Analysis field group as a potential host for the agroecology track, including study abroad …

A Path To Visibility And Leadership: How Mentoring Relationships Impact Career Advancement In Student Affairs For Asian American Women, Erica Alcantara Aros Jan 2022

A Path To Visibility And Leadership: How Mentoring Relationships Impact Career Advancement In Student Affairs For Asian American Women, Erica Alcantara Aros

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Asian American women who choose a career in student affairs within the field of higher education are severely underrepresented in both staff positions and top officer/administrator positions compared to White women and other women of color. As the Asian American college student population continues to rise and women make up the majority of undergraduate students in the United States, institutions of higher education must address the need for student affairs staff and administrators to proportionally represent their diverse student bodies. Unfortunately, with an average of 2% of the roles of higher education administrators filled by Asian Americans, few Asian American …

Students’ Reflection Of Cross-Cultural Experiences: A Study Abroad Narrative, Alexandra Dudley Jan 2022

Students’ Reflection Of Cross-Cultural Experiences: A Study Abroad Narrative, Alexandra Dudley

Masters Theses

This study sought to explore the cross-cultural experiences of students who had studied abroad during their undergraduate college years. Previous research has shown the importance and impact of study abroad and cultural experiences on student development. A qualitative approach, specifically a narrative method, was utilized to best understand students’ stories and how they made meaning of their study abroad experiences. Four participants were interviewed one-on-one, and their stories or narratives are provided here. This study revealed that students studying abroad with adequate support will experience an array of cross-cultural influences that leave lasting impacts on their personal and professional lives.

Hazing Prevention: The Advisor Perspective, Gabby Hiller Jan 2022

Hazing Prevention: The Advisor Perspective, Gabby Hiller

Masters Theses

There has been extensive research conducted on students’ perceptions and understanding of hazing in fraternities and sororities (Allen & Madden, 2008; Allen & Madden, 2012; Alexander, 2018; Cokley et al., 2020). Despite preventative efforts and existing research, hazing continues to occur and continues to threaten the future of fraternity and sorority life. There is little to no research on chapter advisors’ understanding of hazing and hazing prevention in their roles. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine the role that fraternity advisors play in the education and prevention of hazing, through interview with the advisors. The study looks …

The (Millennial) Times, They Are A’Changin’: Understanding Gen Z’S Expectations In The Classroom, Hayley C. Hoffman Jan 2022

The (Millennial) Times, They Are A’Changin’: Understanding Gen Z’S Expectations In The Classroom, Hayley C. Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Drawing from over a decade of research, it can be said with relative certainty what millennial learners expected of their instructors when they were in the college classroom. But what about the expectations and needs of our current group of students, Generation Z? Because few studies exist on Gen Z in higher education spaces, this dissertation establishes a baseline of what these students might need and expect from market and generational research on this group of students and establishes expectancy violations theory as a sound theoretical base for instructional research. This dissertation’s longitudinal, two-phase study, then, seeks to determine Gen …

Writing Centers, Enclaves, And Creating Spaces Of Change Within Universities, Bronwyn T. Williams Jan 2022

Writing Centers, Enclaves, And Creating Spaces Of Change Within Universities, Bronwyn T. Williams

The Writing Center Journal

Writing center scholarship often highlights the ways in which their distinctive, less directive, nongraded, and individualized instruction can make them distinctive social and pedagogical spaces. There is a simultaneous argument, however, that writing centers are often institutionally vulnerable and may be unable to engage in or promote such differences within the larger college or university. Yet, despite their size and possible vulnerability, the daily practices and institutional positioning of writing centers can help change conversations and work toward a different vision, political approach, and institutional presence. Drawing on Victor Friedman’s concept of “enclaves of different practice” and Brian Massumi’s theories …

A Narrative Inquiry On The Leadership Of Latina Women Practitioners In Community Colleges, Cynthia Padilla-Gaytan Jan 2022

A Narrative Inquiry On The Leadership Of Latina Women Practitioners In Community Colleges, Cynthia Padilla-Gaytan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation of practice explored the experiences of Latina women student affairs practitioners as they engage in leadership at community colleges. Guided by LatCrit, this study combined a narrative inquiry approach with the use of pláticas. Data was collected via interviews with five Latina women student affairs professionals. Through the use of pláticas, the findings narrates participants’ reflections on their experiences of navigating white, masculine leadership norms. Specifically, white, masculine norms of leadership led to Latina women not seeing themselves as leaders growing up and early in their careers. white, masculine norms of leadership also created barriers for when Latina …

A Phenomenological Study Exploring Arab Muslim Students At Community College And Islamophobia, Dustin French Jan 2022

A Phenomenological Study Exploring Arab Muslim Students At Community College And Islamophobia, Dustin French

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Arab Muslim students continue to face various forms of islamophobia on campus despite efforts from the college to make campus more welcoming and inclusive. As Muslim students express concern about the rise of islamophobia on campus and bigoted rhetoric on social media, college leaders, administration, and faculty have an imperative role to play in curbing anti-Muslim sentiments, xenophobia, and racism across campus and in the classrooms. To address these concerns effectively and meaningfully, it is important for colleges to understand who their Arab Muslim students are and the challenges they face as college students amid islamophobia. This dissertation explored how …

Guided Research-Informed Notetaking, Julian Kilker Jan 2022

Guided Research-Informed Notetaking, Julian Kilker

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Structured note-taking is useful for courses—particularly online courses—that expect students to closely read texts and integrate them into their research. This flexible and reconfigurable practice encourages students to take notes about texts using Google Form prompts. Faculty can efficiently review notes to assess students’ engagement with texts and adjust class meetings and assignments.

This practice extends Cornell’s Notes system originally created by Walter Pauk. I use Google Forms to create structured prompts, and use Google Sheets to review, organize, and distribute student notes.

Improving Active Learning Through Advanced Teaching Practices On An Online Course, Jin Ouk O. Choi Jan 2022

Improving Active Learning Through Advanced Teaching Practices On An Online Course, Jin Ouk O. Choi

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Since the outbreak of the COVID, there has been a great need to advance learning experiences and opportunities for students when the courses are taught remotely. To address the need, the author incorporated the teaching strategies learned from the Culturally Relevant & Responsive Teaching (CRRT) fellows program supported by the NSF TRANSCEnD project. In Fall 2021, the author implemented multiple new teaching techniques and strategies in the CEM453-653 course, delivered entirely online. The specific teaching practices and technologies are: 1) Delivering lectures both live (synchronous) and recordings (asynchronous); 2) Using adaptive technology (Mentimeter & WebEx Poll) with real-time feedback; 3) …

Toward Building Science Literacy, Kathryn Rafferty Jan 2022

Toward Building Science Literacy, Kathryn Rafferty

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Reading scientific literature is a critical science competency that proves difficult to “teach.” Students enter our classes with varying science vocabularies, and many suffer imposter syndrome when reading technical reports because they do not yet identify as capable scientists. The “Science Literacy” assignment guides students to develop and expand strategies to read science articles. Over the semester, students read 5 to 6 articles ranging from peer-reviewed manuscripts to popular science magazines to science blogs about sequencing Ozzy Osbourne's DNA. In Canvas Discussion boards, they a guiding set of questions and then respond to their peers. This assignment is a low-stakes …

Online Small Groups And Student-Faculty Connections, Sheila Janofsky Jan 2022

Online Small Groups And Student-Faculty Connections, Sheila Janofsky

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

When classes moved online to protect community health, many students felt disconnected from their teachers and peers. To address this lost sense of connection, I restructured a live remote class. Rather than teaching this 400-level class live via WebEx with some breakouts for active learning assignments, I pre-recorded the lectures for each week and asked the students to watch these on their own time. I assigned the students to small (5-6 person) discussion groups and broke out our assigned class meeting times into multiple small group meetings. We meet in these small groups every week to discuss questions prepared by …

An Intensive Course: Benefits For Non-Traditional Students In A Practice-Based Discipline, Lisa Nicholas, Necole Leland, Jennifer Pfannes, Jovi Dumangan, Hope Hinchman, Gretchen Little, Angela E. Silvestri-Elmore

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Intensive courses: compressed, condensed, or accelerated courses deliver content within a shortened period of time. An intensive course is not meant to be a copy and paste of a traditional full-semester course.

Students will:

  • Meet more frequently for a shorter period of time for class activities, discussions, and group work.

  • Have increased number of out-of-class, self-study commitment hours for pre intensive course preparation.

Intensive courses provide a different modality to the higher educational environment. Non-traditional students, such as second-degree-seeking, desire to return to school while keeping pace with their daily responsibilities and therefore require non-traditional methods of instruction. This type …

Informed Self-Assessment And Peer Evaluation To Foster The Development Of Adaptive Learners In Online Education, Tiffany Barrett, Jen Nash Jan 2022

Informed Self-Assessment And Peer Evaluation To Foster The Development Of Adaptive Learners In Online Education, Tiffany Barrett, Jen Nash

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Functioning in an online education model, we find ourselves refocusing on the best way to engage learners in academic content and professional development. For example, physical therapy students have shown difficulty engaging in self-reflection.1 Yet, we know that self-assessment helps practitioners recognize, interpret, and be moved to action.2 Research has suggested that self-assessment is vitally important during the assessing phase of becoming a master adaptive learner.3 It has also been shown to increase students’ understanding and promote the implementation of patient-centered practice.4 We aimed to adapt previous modes of assessment to the online environment. We did …

Promoting Equity And Engagement With Randomness, Aaron Saiewitz Jan 2022

Promoting Equity And Engagement With Randomness, Aaron Saiewitz

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Classroom discussion is a key aspect of learning, but class discussion is often dominated by extroverted students. Further, research shows that students from underrepresented groups are often less likely to participate in classroom discussion. While instructors may attempt to broaden participation by calling on students to participate, instructors are often subject to unconscious biases which cause them to call more often on students with certain characteristics. To address these issues, I recommend a random calling technique using a random number generator to create an advance list of students to call on during class. This random approach addresses the issue of …
