The Journal of Advancing Education Practice
Colleges and universities struggle with declining program completion rates among graduate students. While the attrition rate of graduate students declined over the last five years in the United States, the issue of graduate student persistence continues to be challenging. This study identifies and explores reported characteristics: expectations, motivation, self-discipline, emotional intelligence, and passion for learning. Graduate students studying educational leadership conducted a qualitative inquiry to approach theoretical comprehension of the intrinsic motivations, expectations, and major attributes of successful graduate students. Examining these areas provides a deeper understanding of success achieved by graduate students.

Using Doctoral Education And Research-Based Learning To Advance The Nurse Leader, Kara R. De La Fosse
The Journal of Advancing Education Practice
Nurse leaders perform in highly autonomous positions in two dimensions; academia, and the clinical setting with the awesome responsibility to serve and protect others. To guide nursing practice, research-based skills are crucial to ensure leadership decisions are founded in evidence-based practice. Random controlled studies are gold-standard in healthcare compared to correlation or descriptive studies and employ a systematic review to strengthen findings (Schmidt & Brown, 2021). Research skills are prominent in numerous components of the leadership scope to perform at a stellar level.

Still A Private Universe? Community College Students’ Understanding Of Evolution, Meredith A. Dorner, Philip Sadler, Brian Alters
Still A Private Universe? Community College Students’ Understanding Of Evolution, Meredith A. Dorner, Philip Sadler, Brian Alters
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Measuring what students know and retain about evolution is essential to improving our understanding of how students learn evolution. The literature shows that college students appear to have a poor understanding of evolution, answering questions on various instruments correctly only about half of the time. There is little research regarding evolution understanding among community college students and so this study examines if those students who are enrolled in life science classes, who are assessed using questions based on grade eight standards, show a better understanding of evolutionary principles than younger students and if there are differences in knowledge based …

RACISM IN YOUR LIFE
The depth, impact, and experience of “racism” in our personal lives is a story that we do not often tell. These are predominantly private matters, only occasionally shared and with only certain people in our lives. Unfortunately, many people in our world are unaware of its full existence and do not know the truth about the experiences of racism in our daily lives. Without knowledge of these truths, society, including university leadership, cannot make adequate advancements to address these demoralizing experiences of people of color. In this anthology, writings on this subject will bring clarity, truth, …

Students’ Perceptions Of The Effects Of Internships On Confidence And Post-Graduation Outcomes In Higher Education, Jaime L. Grillo
Students’ Perceptions Of The Effects Of Internships On Confidence And Post-Graduation Outcomes In Higher Education, Jaime L. Grillo
Theses and Dissertations
Internships as a form of experiential learning have been consistently considered a “high impact educational experience” because of the value that it provides students during their college careers (O’Neill, 2010, p. 7). Administrators and faculty professionals in colleges and universities are in positions to encourage student engagement by creating experiential learning opportunities for students that will aid them in navigating their academic major and intended career trajectory. This study focused on how a stronger emphasis on internships could influence confidence among college students, as well as play a part in their decision-making process when considering post-graduation plans. The researcher explored …

Impact Of On-Campus Childcare On Student Parent Success In A Community College Setting, Jessica Dillon
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines the impact of on-campus childcare on student parent success. Researchers believe the role stress they experience while balancing their responsibilities as students and parents, combined with their increased likelihood of experiencing financial stressors relative to their peers, impact their success outcomes. Supports like on-campus childcare and financial assistance have both shown positive impacts on student parent success but more research is need to understand their combined impact on student parent success. This study used ex post facto data from n=10785 students that were enrolled in at least one class at New York Community College in fall …
Educating Business And Management Students: Using A Critical Management Lens To Learn From Chattel Slavery, Linda L. Ridley
Educating Business And Management Students: Using A Critical Management Lens To Learn From Chattel Slavery, Linda L. Ridley
Theses and Dissertations
The value of business school pedagogy has received increased attention in recent years (Delgado and Stefancic, 1992; Giacalone and Wargo, 2009; Podolny, 2009; Grier & Poole, 2020; Prieto & Phipps, 2021). This qualitative study examined the ability of higher education business faculty to include chattel slavery in the history of American business (Katznelson, 2005; Baptist, 2014;). Traditionally, the fundamentals of management teaching have been aligned with the belief that conventional management theories were developed separate and apart from the institution of chattel slavery and the management of race (Aufhauser, 1973; Cooke, 2003; Blackmon, 2008; Roediger & Esch, 2012). An interpretivist …
Students’ Experiences: An Examination Of The Academic Success Of Developmental Education Students In Corequisite Courses, Sheryce Woolery
Students’ Experiences: An Examination Of The Academic Success Of Developmental Education Students In Corequisite Courses, Sheryce Woolery
Theses and Dissertations
A significant number of students enter community colleges with developmental education (DE) needs in reading, writing, and mathematics. Many of these students are typically referred to more than one level of DE courses before they can enroll in a college-level course. This has led to lower than desired success rate of DE students over the years. As administrators look for ways to improve DE student outcomes, many institutions have now adopted the corequisite model on account of results of several quantitative studies, which reveal high success rates of DE students enrolled in corequisite courses. With the corequisite model being widely …
The Role Of Mentorship In The Advancement Of Black Women In Higher Education Administrative Roles, Kimberly Colclough
The Role Of Mentorship In The Advancement Of Black Women In Higher Education Administrative Roles, Kimberly Colclough
Theses and Dissertations
Literature has suggested that mentorship is one of the most influential components of career advancement. However, for Black women in higher education administrative roles, mentorship also serves to garner community and support. This research study focuses on the lived experiences of Black women administrators in higher education institutions, the obstacles they face in pursuit of support and career advancement, and how they benefited from a relationship with a mentor. This descriptive phenomenological qualitative study was implemented by conducting in-depth interviews with a small sample of (6) six African American women administrators from various higher education institutions located in the Northeast, …
The Effectiveness Of College Readiness College Preparatory Programs For Low-Income Teenagers, Leah Heartfield
The Effectiveness Of College Readiness College Preparatory Programs For Low-Income Teenagers, Leah Heartfield
Theses and Dissertations
High school students from low-income backgrounds experience academic under-preparedness, financial distress, and socialization challenges when entering college. For these students, challenges may begin in the K-12 setting, where this population is more likely to face limitations in college counseling, lack highly qualified teachers, and have limited access to college programs. First generation college students are less likely to pursue and persist in higher education than their peers with different backgrounds (OECD, 2012). Because of this, low-income students may seek out or be invited to join supplemental programs, including summer bridge and afterschool programs, to help them become college ready. The …

A Case Study On The Role Of Pre-Departure Training In Study Abroad Experiences, Lampeto Efthymiou
Theses and Dissertations
As students need to attain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to live and work in a diverse global society, they participate in study abroad opportunities offered by higher education institutions to assist them with intercultural learning. However, prior research shows that the level of intercultural learning in study abroad programs can vary substantially. The purpose of this case study is to investigate how a program’s use of pre-departure training relates to the development of global competence in participants of a short-term study abroad program. The participants of this study come from a purposive sample who attended a community college in …
Effects Of Undergraduate Service Immersion Program On Participants And Mission Integration, Victoria Santangelo
Effects Of Undergraduate Service Immersion Program On Participants And Mission Integration, Victoria Santangelo
Theses and Dissertations
The focus on the transmission of mission in Catholic colleges and universities has heightened over the past decade as there is a recognition of the impact of diminishing numbers of priests and vowed clergy. Nationally, the concern over sponsorship in universities that are sponsored by religious communities has led to a dialogue about the most effective way to transmit mission to subsequent generations of students. It is the perspective of this research that an effective way to transmit mission to the next generation of students, in addition to curricular efforts, is through service immersion programs. In this research, a special …
Adjunct Instructors’ Preparedness To Support Students With Disabilities And The Diverse Learning Styles Of All Students, William Leonelli
Adjunct Instructors’ Preparedness To Support Students With Disabilities And The Diverse Learning Styles Of All Students, William Leonelli
Theses and Dissertations
As noted by the National Center for Education Statistics (2020), the enrollment of students with disabilities in the higher education environment continues to grow. As more students with disabilities transition into the postsecondary environment, their diverse learning needs and required supports must be addressed to ensure their postsecondary success. Although research has shown how all instructors need to be better aware of supporting the needs of students with disabilities within the postsecondary classroom (Cory, 2011), there is a particular need to explore the experiences of adjunct faculty supporting students with disabilities within these classrooms, as this area has been researched …

Help, Is It Worth It For Me(N)?: A Study Of Factors Affecting Black Men's Perception Of Resource Management Strategies In Community College, Bryce E. Tolbert
Theses and Dissertations
Nationally, men of color are graduating college at the lowest rates of all race gender subgroups. Prior research suggests this population faces unique obstacles as it relates to race and gender and these challenges are often invisible and difficult to resolve. Academic supports can help students overcome these obstacles; however, it is not clear that they are influencing Black men’s academic help-seeking behavior and, thus, their educational outcomes. Using the Motivated Learning Strategies Questionnaire and data from Knight Community College, two multiple regressions and three t-test were used to explore the relationship between value, expectancy, program participation and resource management …

How Do First-Year Dominican Students Perceive Their First Year Of College And How Do These Perceptions Impact Their Retention, Maria C. Cano
Theses and Dissertations
College completion rate is a major challenge afflicting colleges and universities as well as students in the United States, particularly Hispanic students (Field, 2018). This qualitative case study aimed to investigate how Dominican students perceived their first year of college and how that perception impacted their retention in a community college in the Northeast. Participants included a purposeful sample of fourteen students (four students enrolled fall of 2021 and four students who did not enroll in the spring of 2022, five students from a focus group, and one of the students from the focus group was interviewed for an in-depth …

Inclusive Music Teacher Education: Valuing Breadth And Diversity Through Authentic Immersive Experiences, Rhonda J. Fuelberth, Robert H. Woody
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
In this report of self-study research, we share the insights we have gained working together at our institution to make undergraduate music teacher education more inclusive of how people naturally do music, focusing on three program features. First, we explain how our program affirms composition as a primary form of musicianship, similar to the status commonly given to performance. Second, we describe a vernacular music making experience in which our music education students learn to play “rock band” instruments, engage in songwriting, and explore being expressive in the styles of music personally favored by themselves and their future students. Third, …
