ETSU Faculty Works
The purpose of this study was to assess the status of institutional stakeholders’ perceptions and application of shared governance on an American higher education campus and a counterpart in China and determine if there were differences among the groups of stakeholders both within and between the institutions. Significant differences were found among the four categories of participants at the Chinese institution. For the General Acceptance dimension of the Perceptions of Shared Governance Inventory (PSGI) the Chinese staff members reported significantly higher scores than all the other three categories. For the Implementation dimension, staff members and the students scored significantly higher …

Latino Emergent Bilingual Students' Experiences With The Middle School Transition, Kerry Pecho
Latino Emergent Bilingual Students' Experiences With The Middle School Transition, Kerry Pecho
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reports the findings of a qualitative study that examined how Latino emergent bilingual students anticipate and experience the transition from a bilingual elementary school program to middle school. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who were native Spanish-speakers participated in focus group discussions. Overall, participants described positive transition experiences, and much of the content was not unique to these students (e.g., feeling nervous, looking forward to more activities). Other content, though, revealed transition experiences that may be unique to this population (e.g., dramatic shift in ethnic and linguistic backgrounds of peers). Participants' responses suggested that they experience a …

Why Do Undergraduate Women Persist As Stem Majors? A Study At Twotechnological Universities, Ronald Brandt
Why Do Undergraduate Women Persist As Stem Majors? A Study At Twotechnological Universities, Ronald Brandt
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields despite significant policy efforts to increase the number of qualified women. Prior research focused on access for women into advanced high school mathematics and science courses. Parity has been achieved in academic prerequisites for STEM studies in higher education, yet the number of women majoring in STEM has remained static. Recent research has focused on the socio-cultural obstacles that women face, including a lower self-confidence in their abilities, bias and gender stereotypes.
A survey was undertaken to examine the self-confidence, opinions and backgrounds of female students persisting as STEM majors at two …
Beloved Co-Laborers: A Leadership Framework From Leo Xiii’S Writings On The Dignity Of Labor, Henry J. Davis
Beloved Co-Laborers: A Leadership Framework From Leo Xiii’S Writings On The Dignity Of Labor, Henry J. Davis
Education Student Dissertations
Many sources identified 19th-century Pope Leo XIII as one of the fathers of modern-day Roman Catholic social teachings. Throughout his church leadership life, Leo authored pastoral and encyclical letters on topics addressing the dignity of labor. In this historical analysis study, the objective was to code Leo’s 1877-1878 Lenten Pastoral Letters, his labor encyclical Rerum Novarum, and the Rerum-inspired Graves de Communi Re to extract major recurring themes on the importance of working-class labor and the inherent worth of all human beings. The purpose of this study was to consider the leadership of Pope Leo XIII on the dignity of …

Measure Of A Man: A Grounded Theory Approach To Understanding Gay/Queer College Men’S Self Identified Masculinity, Ryan Jasen Henne
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop an understanding of the role that masculinity has in identity development among self-identified Gay/Queer (GQ) collegiate men. The goal of this study was to develop a theory that explains how traditional college-age GQ men view masculinity within the context of their performance as men on a college campus. 16 college-aged GQ men attending a four-year, private liberal arts institution in the southeastern United States were the subjects in this study. The participants consisted of: two first year students, three sophomores, two juniors, eights seniors, and one individual that who had …

“What The Hell Is Revise?”: Student Approaches To Coursework In Developmental English At One Urban-Serving Community College, Stefan A. Perun
“What The Hell Is Revise?”: Student Approaches To Coursework In Developmental English At One Urban-Serving Community College, Stefan A. Perun
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The primary objective of this dissertation was to help illuminate why most students who enroll in developmental English at community colleges never make it to a college-level course. The extant literature suggests that students’ learning experiences in a course largely account for success or failure, yet few studies have uncovered how students experience content and pedagogy in developmental English at community colleges, and how these experiences shape students’ success or failure in their course. To remedy this gap, I conducted a semester-long, classroom level, qualitative study of three sections of developmental English at one community college. I primarily relied upon …
Development Of University Related Foundations In China, Li Guo
Development Of University Related Foundations In China, Li Guo
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The major purpose of the study was to identify significant organizational changes that have taken place in foundations of national Chinese public universities from 1999 to 2012. The study also attempted to explore major forces behind these changes. A secondary purpose was to seek for ideas on promoting higher education philanthropy in China by explore successful experiences in other countries.
To achieve the goals, this study: (a) started by identifying challenges on financing higher education in China as well as pointing out that the Chinese government and higher education institutions have begun to generate diversifying revenue sources including recently adopted …

Beyond Assumptions: How Urban Students View And Practice Digital Literacies In And Out Of School, Storey Mecoli
Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
This qualitative, ethnographic case study investigates digital literacy practices and perceptions of students at an urban public high school in the Boston metropolitan area comprising a racially, ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse student body, an under-studied demographic. The study compares in-school and out-of-school literacy practices and posits the role schools might play in preparing learners. The study examines digital literacy practices among student based on information gathered through focus groups, survey methods, and interviews. Three controlling questions guided the study:
- What digital literacy practices are students in Washington High School engaging in outside of school?
- What purposes do these youth …
