Is Retention Enough? Learning And Satisfaction Of First-Generation College Seniors, David Mahan, Kristin B. Wilson, Joseph M. Petrosko Jr., Michael R. Luthy
Is Retention Enough? Learning And Satisfaction Of First-Generation College Seniors, David Mahan, Kristin B. Wilson, Joseph M. Petrosko Jr., Michael R. Luthy
Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice
Progress has been made in retaining and graduating traditional-age first-generation college students at four-year institutions. First-generation students, however, often experience college differently because of external factors, which can negatively influence their learning experience and overall satisfaction. This study explored learning and satisfaction measures of seniors at a small private university in the Midwest. Using Astin’s I-E-O model (1970), the following variables were considered: precollege student characteristics (input); academic engagement, co-curricular activities, campus relationships (environment); and satisfaction, learning (outcome). The sample consisted of seniors participating in NSSE and/or ETS MAPP (n=342). Findings confirmed that first-generation students typically worked more for pay, …

Exploring The Factors That Influence And Motivate Female Students To Enroll And Persist In Collegiate Stem Degree Programs: A Mixed Methods Study, Rosemary L. Edzie
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Nationally, the need for an increase in interest, enrollment, and degrees awarded from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree programs continues to suffer. While students are enrolling in collegiate STEM degree programs, it is not occurring at a rate that meets the workforce demand. In addition to the concern that there is not a sufficient amount of collegiate STEM majors, there is a concern over too few females enrolling and persisting in collegiate STEM degree programs.
This mixed methods sequential exploratory research study considered the factors that influence and motivate undergraduate female students to enroll and persist in collegiate …

Guiding The Work Of Professional Learning Communities: Perspectives For School Leaders, Daniel Paul Draper
Guiding The Work Of Professional Learning Communities: Perspectives For School Leaders, Daniel Paul Draper
Dissertations and Theses
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are groups of educators committed to working collaboratively in ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve. PLCs operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous job-embedded learning for educators (DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, & Many, 2006). Researchers and practitioners agree that PLCs are critical to the overall success of schools. The problem is that implementing PLCs with fidelity to an inquiry process is a real challenge. Most school districts do not have a systematic or comprehensive approach to guide their PLC …

Assessment For Learning: An Evaluation Of A Professional, Aimee Davis Feehery
Assessment For Learning: An Evaluation Of A Professional, Aimee Davis Feehery
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this program evaluation was to determine how teachers have come to understand, use, and value formative assessment through their participation in our Assessment for Learning Teams for the past five years. Greeno, Collins, & Resnick's (1996) learning theory serves as the theoretical framework of the evaluation, as this program evaluation serves to determine if, and how, teachers have changed their mental models of assessment from a Behaviorist-Differentiationist model to the Cognitive-Situative model, or from an Assessment of Learning view of assessment, to an Assessment for Learning perspective. In order to determine if teachers have gained the conceptual …

Examining The Climate Of Academic Integrity At A Small Middle Atlantic Liberal Arts College, Keith Kemo
Examining The Climate Of Academic Integrity At A Small Middle Atlantic Liberal Arts College, Keith Kemo
Theses and Dissertations
Academic integrity and moral development have always been synonymous with student learning in higher education. When combined, the two form the basis for positive learning at the college level (Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991, 2005). It is also clear from preexisting literature that a person experiences significant moral development during traditional college years (Kohlberg & Hersh, 1977; Perry, 1981; Gilligan, 1982; Chickering & Reiser, 1993). This study examined preexisting literature on leadership as well as previous studies dealing with issues of academic integrity in higher educational institutions. It combined leadership theory and the author's leadership style. An initial examination of the …

Merced College: An Online Library Presence, Joselle L. Merritt
Instructional Design Capstones Collection
Merced College has a number of courses being taught on line and that the number continues to grow. The college is currently implementing online courses that meet the requirements of California SB520, passed in May of 2013, requiring all California students to have access to online classes at any California community college. This applies only if the classes they need are not available at their home institution. Added to this is the requirement from the accrediting agency for California Community Colleges that all students, both distance and face-to-face have equal access to library resources. As more and more classes go …
Anti-Bullying Bill Of Rights Act (Abbra) In New Jersey: A Case Study Of The Implementation Of Regulatory Policy, Kara Douma
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate year two of the implementation of the New Jersey Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (ABBRA). The environment of accountability has become increasingly prominent through the ongoing development of regulatory policy in the field of education (Anderson, 2011; Fowler, 2009; Limber & Small, 2003; Peterson & West, 2003; Rudalevige, 2003; United States Department of Education, 2011; White House, 2011). This investigation focused on the gap between crafted policy and implementation of policy due to prior anti-bullying legislation throughout the country having been unsuccessful in the implementation phase (Glover, Cartwright, Gough, & Johnson, …
An Exploration Of The Lived Social, Emotional, And Academic Experiences Of Obese Adolescents Within Three Conceptual Frameworks Using Mixed Methods Research, Julie Benavides
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the experiences of obese adolescents and to investigate middle and high school students' attitudes toward obese students. During phase one, quantitative data was collected through the Attitude Toward Obese Persons (ATOP) survey. The survey research sample was 1448 middle and high school students. The quantitative data was analyzed through cross gender and grade level comparisons. Results indicated both female and male students in middle school and high school have a slightly positive attitude toward obese students. During phase two, qualitative data was collected through focus groups with 5 middle …
