The Role Of Personal Disposition And Preference Matching In Information Security Message Persuasiveness, Feng Xu May 2022

The Role Of Personal Disposition And Preference Matching In Information Security Message Persuasiveness, Feng Xu

Theses and Dissertations

How to design effective persuasive information security messages to motivate individuals’ engagement in recommended protective security behaviors has become a top priority in the information security field. Although fear appeals have been shown to be an effective means to influence individuals’ security-related protective behaviors, recent information security research has called for a deeper understanding of recipients’ information processing of messages to design effective fear appeals. Previous IS security research has explored two individuals’ information processing routes of security messages, the central route, and the peripheral route, and has investigated the impacts of central variables, perceived argument quality, and peripheral variables, …

The Dark Side Of Artificial Intelligence: Understanding The Role Of Perceived Algorithm Unfairness On Ride-Hailing Driver Discontinuance, Zhenya Tang

Theses and Dissertations

Ride-hailing platforms (RHP) are sharing economy platforms that connect passengers who need to order a private ride or to share a vehicle with drivers who want to share a ride. However, after rapid growth, major RHPs (e.g., Uber, Lyft, and Didi) have begun to face severe driver shortages. Attracting and maintaining a large driver base is critical to the survival and success of any RHP no matter its size. While practitioners are urging to seek suggestions from academia to prevent driver loss, limited research attention has been paid to RHP drivers’ discontinuance. To fill this gap, this dissertation aims to …

Compliance Based Penetration Testing As A Service, Srinivasulu R. Vuggumudi, Kaushik Ragothaman, Yong Wang

Research & Publications

The current penetration testing method practiced in the information systems domain is insufficient to protect information systems. Penetration testing is part of the final acceptance criteria before the system is released into a production environment. Once the system is in production, the environment and configuration are bound to change for various reasons, especially in cloud environments. This change can create vulnerabilities, and hackers take advantage of them. In cloud service models like PaaS, security is a shared responsibility of tenant and provider, and it is challenging to perform penetration testing. This paper introduces a new method called Compliance Based Penetration …

Improving The Effectiveness Of Security Controls To Prevent Apt Attacks, Srinivasulu R. Vuggumudi, Yong Wang, Kaushik Ragothaman, Cherie Noteboom, Jun Liu

Research & Publications

An advanced persistent threat (APT) is a prolonged, aimed attack on a specific target. Cyber attackers gain access to a system or network and remain there for an extended period without being detected. The goal of APT attackers is generally stealing data and intellectual property. Despite all the awareness, technological advancements, and massive investment, the fight against APTs is a losing battle. A false sense of security is a belief that the organization is safer than it is. We researched whether organizations have a false sense of security against APT attacks and what contributes to that belief. Our research indicated …

Predicting And Composing A Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 Single With Descriptive Analytics And Classification, Matthew Deamon

Honors Projects

In late 20th and early 21st century Western popular music, there are cyclical structures, sounds, and themes that come and go with historical trends. Not only do the production techniques utilized reflect technological advancements (the Yamaha DX7, the Roland 808, etc.), the art form reflects contemporary cultural attitudes through lyrics and stylistic choice. Through this lens, pop songs can serve as historical artifacts for their unique ability to captivate listeners based on their generally acceptable and familiar elements, both upon release and with future audiences. It raises the questions: “Can a chronological analysis of artistic choices reveal trends …

Strategic Use Of Topic-Congruent Managerial Responses In Online Review Systems, Sun Tae Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Strategic use of systems beyond firm control (SBFC) is a critical challenge for firms that are voluntarily or involuntarily represented in these systems. Firms are forced to use SBFCs that are information systems neither designed nor controlled by them to stay competitive in the market. Online review systems are a class of SBFC in which companies can participate while playing by the systems’ rules through managerial responses. Through a mixed-methods investigation that combines an archival study and two experimental studies, we extend the understanding of the benefits that the firms who intervene in these systems can receive. In the first …

Teaching Tip: Socio-Cultural Learning To Increase Student Engagement In Introduction To Mis, Amy J. Connolly, Leigh A. Mutchler, Daniel E. Rush

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction to Management Information Systems (MIS) is a challenging course to teach because of the broad expanse of rapidlychanging material, the centrality of the course to the business curriculum, students’ demand for interactive teaching rather than traditional lecture, and general student disinterest in or lack of familiarity with the subject. Further compounding these problems, faculty may not be adequately comfortable with or trained in active teaching modalities. To address these challenges, we used principles of socio-cultural learning to design a system of class activities to teach the dynamic concepts commonly found in the Introduction to MIS course. Scholars, government, and the public expect that legal enforcement should be an effective means to prevent a firm's future safety violation behavior in daily productions. However, the literature provides limited insights into whether safety regulation enforcement is effective in helping firms reduce future safety violations. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between occupational health and safety enforcement and a firm's future violation behavior. We carried out a regression analysis based on a panel sample of 2965 listed United States manufacturers with 4474 violation records issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. We find limited effectiveness of enforcement. Our results …

How Apis Create Growth By Inverting The Firm, Seth G. Benzell, Jonathan Hersh, Marshall Van Alstyne Mar 2022

How Apis Create Growth By Inverting The Firm, Seth G. Benzell, Jonathan Hersh, Marshall Van Alstyne

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Traditional asset management strategy has emphasized building barriers to entry or closely guarding unique assets to maintain a firm’s comparative advantage. A new “Inverted Firm” paradigm, however, has emerged. Under this strategy, firms share data seeking to become platforms by opening digital services to third-parties and capturing part of their external surplus. This contrasts with a “pipeline” strategy where the firm itself creates value. This paper quantitatively estimates the effect of adopting an inverted firm strategy through the lens of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), a key enabling technology. Using both public data and that of a private API development firm, …
