Cricket, Capitalism And Class: From The Village Green To The Cricket Industry, Martin Barrett
Cricket, Capitalism And Class: From The Village Green To The Cricket Industry, Martin Barrett
Global Sport Business Journal
Author Chris McMillan, through Cricket, Capitalism and Class: From the Village Green to the Cricket Industry, provides a definitive and compelling critical sociological investigation of modern cricket’s rise from an English leisure pursuit and role in the expanding capitalism of Empire to today’s multi-billion-dollar cricket industry. This account is constructed through a largely Marxist reading of the sport’s entwining with the processes of capitalism and class. Specifically, class and the class structures reproduced by and through cricket are seen as critical in reproducing a system favorable to both historical and contemporary exploitation and expropriation. As the book transitions from exploring …

Book Review: Interrogating Integration: Sport, Celebrity, And Scandal In The Making Of New Germany, Sangchul Park
Global Sport Business Journal
This review discusses Interrogating Integration: Sport, Celebrity, and Scandal in the Making of New Germany by Kate Zambon. Through discourse analysis of media narratives, Zambon demonstrates that athletes and celebrities of immigrant or minority backgrounds become symbolic figures whose successes and failures test the nation’s integration project, with case studies including the 2006 World Cup, the Sarrazin debate, and the Integration Bambi Awards. The book’s originality lies in moving beyond legal or policy frameworks to foreground mediated narratives, offering clear and coherent arguments supported by a logically organized structure. While the absence of comparative perspectives and audience reception studies leaves …

A Multiple-Case Study Exploring Ineffective Internal Communication Management Strategies Of Small Businesses, Krissandra Seymour
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative, multiple-case study was to address a gap in the existing literature and to offer practical applications for small businesses with virtual employees regarding their internal communication management strategies. Previous research regarding internal communication management strategies predominantly concentrated on larger organizations. However, given the crucial role that small businesses play in the nation’s economy and the increasing employment of virtual employees, it was essential to explore the strategies employed by small businesses in the United States. For this study, 27 leaders from small businesses in the Midwest were interviewed. The findings indicated that organizations lacking effective …

Generation Z And Entrepreneurship: Community Banking’S Next Challenge, Arturo Rodriguez
Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship
Generation Z (Gen Z), is currently graduating from college and joining the workforce in the United States. Gen Z is distinctly unique from other generations and has been identified as highly entrepreneurial. Gen Z has also been recognized as being highly reliant on technology, which is something that the banking industry, but specifically, smaller community banks have not yet fully embraced. This paper explores strategies that community banks’ executives and board of directors can utilize to attract Gen Z entrepreneurs who, in general, despise or do not have knowledge of the way in which banks conduct business lending.

The book dives into the state of Texas’s role in changing the sports landscape through the 1960s and 1980s. Guridy does so by focusing on five overarching themes: (1) desegregation and racial progress, (2) commercialization of sports and infrastructure, (3) gender dynamics in sports, (4) influence of media, and (5) community engagement. The book dives into various events that highlight each one of the themes to illustrate how Texas influenced changes to form the modern sports system. Overall, the book provides …

Understanding Entrepreneurial Culture: Resident Perspectives In A Post-Soviet Transition Country, Azamat Maksudunov, Kyialbek Dyikanov
Journal of Global Business Insights
The concept of entrepreneurial culture has frequently appeared in academic studies dedicated to both developed and developing countries. However, this topic has not been sufficiently investigated in the case of post-Soviet Central Asian countries, particularly in the context of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan can be an intriguing case study for analyzing entrepreneurial culture, as it has experienced distinct political and economic paradigms throughout its historical trajectory. This paper aims to empirically examine the current state and provide suggestions for the further development of entrepreneurial culture in Kyrgyzstan. This research is based on a conceptual framework developed through a review of existing literature …

Fire! It Took A Brush With Catastrophe To Get Me To Focus On The Need To Be Prepared To Prevent And Manage A Fire Emergency In The Office., Stuart Segelnick Dds, Ms
The New York State Dental Journal
Backing up your office computer data and encompassing your practice management software, your imaging software and everything your office needs to treat patients and do business are essential, for you never know when a disaster might strike, making it crucial to have daily backups of electronic records and office data, preferably both cloud and physical storage. One very prudent recommendation offered to me by the New York City Small Business Service grant program after Hurricane Sandy destroyed my office 13 years ago was to have a battery backup system in my newly built office. This would improve resiliency during a …

Customer Food Intake: An Empirical Analysis Of Gender, Restaurant Use And Attitude Toward Fast Food Among Adolescents And Young Adults, In Nairobi, Kenya, Gerishom G. Madivoli, Rosemarie Ayuma Khayiya, Beatrice Kamau
Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
Fast food is the fastest- growing food category worldwide, providing young people and adolescents with a quick, cost- effective, and easily accessible alternative to home- cooked meals. There has been considerably less research into how gender, restaurant usage, and attitudes influence patterns of fast- food consumption. Moreover, the growth of the fast- food industry in every nation creates a significant environmental impetus for increasing fast food consumption and promoting unhealthy eating behaviours. If this issue is not addressed, the prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, along with the costs of managing these conditions, will escalate, particularly in Kenya. This …

This editorial stresses the critical need for every dentist to track key performance indicators such as production, profit, and overhead to ensure long-term practice success. It advocates for setting and monitoring daily, weekly, and monthly goals for both doctor and hygiene departments. Strategies for effective practice management include regular team meetings, optimizing supply audits to eliminate unused materials, and planning for seasonal patient fluctuations to keep overhead in sync. The author also emphasizes the importance of providing proper training for the dental team, such as the MDA’s X-ray certification or the Certified Dental Business Professional designation, to enhance patient communication, …
Dentistry And The Law: We Forgot To Renew Our Employment Agreement —Now What?, Daniel Schulte Jd
Dentistry And The Law: We Forgot To Renew Our Employment Agreement —Now What?, Daniel Schulte Jd
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This Q&A addresses the legal implications when a fixed-term dental employment agreement expires without formal renewal. MDA Legal Counsel explains that if the employee continues working under the same conditions, an oral employment agreement is implicitly formed, retaining the original terms but becoming terminable without cause by either party at any time. A key consequence is that any post-termination provisions, such as a covenant not to compete, begin their restricted period countdown from the original agreement's expiration date, regardless of continued employment. The article advises that it's generally more practical for employment agreements to simply state that the term continues …
Staff Matters: Can I Google Someone Before I Decide To Hire Them?, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
Staff Matters: Can I Google Someone Before I Decide To Hire Them?, Jodi Schafer Sphr, Shrm-Scp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This Q&A addresses the practice of using Google searches to vet job applicants, cautioning that while it provides public information, it can also inadvertently reveal protected classifications (e.g., religious beliefs, race, age), making hiring decisions based on such information illegal and discriminatory. The article advises conducting internet searches after a screening interview to first establish a candidate's qualifications, which provides a defensible rationale for hiring choices. It is crucial to obtain a signed release from the applicant before conducting any background checks to ensure compliance with laws like the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The author also notes that requiring access …

In These Challenging Times: Why Practice Analytics Are Your New Best Friend, Patrick Houlihan Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This article argues that financial success is crucial for a thriving dental practice in today's competitive market, despite dentists often lacking sufficient business management training. It introduces practice analytics as a fundamental tool to optimize operations and maximize profitability, enabling dentists to scrutinize outputs, evaluate performance, and implement necessary changes to achieve their goals. Key metrics to track include the number of active patients, monthly collection numbers, the doctor-to-hygiene collection ratio (ideal 65% doctor, 35% hygiene), collection per active patient per year, profit, and various overhead expenses (staff, facility, lab, supply, administrative). The author emphasizes that regular tracking of these …

The Effects Of Organisational Culture In Strengthening Resilience And Technological Innovation: A Case Of Smes In South Africa, Lunathi Gwayi, Ayanda Pekane, Luzuko Tekeni
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
The COVID-19 pandemic changed how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operated by forcing rapid digital transformation and remote work. This created an urgent need to understand how organisational culture can support resilience and encourage innovation. This study addressed the knowledge gap regarding how a strong organisational culture can help SMEs in South Africa navigate global crises, adapt to digital demands, and sustain long-term growth. The purpose of the study was explanatory, supported by an interpretive, inductive approach, and a qualitative strategy. Through semi-structured interviews with senior managers in the South African IT sector, the research identified Clan and Adhocracy cultures …

Valuing Firms Using The Price-To-Sales Ratio: A Practical Perspective, B. Brian Lee, Haeyoung Shin, Dong-Kyoon Kim
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is a key financial metric used to assess a firm's value by comparing its stock price to earnings. However, the P/E ratio becomes ineffective for firms with losses (Joos & Plesko, 2005). In such cases, the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio is an alternative valuation metric. However, while the P/S ratio helps compare firms with similar business models, financial leverage can distort the interpretation of the P/S ratio, potentially misleading investors. This study offers practical guidance for accounting and finance professionals on enhancing the utility of the P/S ratio by considering leverage effects. Using 147,951 firm-year observations from …

Textbooks: Required, Alternatives, Hybrid, Or Disappearance, William Saunders, Carlton Perkins, Michara Delaney-Fields
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
The conversations around transformational changes in higher education are centered around a myriad of issues. Technology, the lasting effects of the pandemic, student satisfaction and readiness for future employment requirements are a few of the leading concerns. However, one subject that is not receiving enough attention is the growing resistance and hesitation among college students to purchase textbooks. Although the movement has not reached the status of a full-blown protest or outright refusal, there is enough attention being brought to the subject that educators may want to be prepared for an eventual change. The need and requirement for textbooks in …

Like Footprints In The Sand: How Founders Imprint Organizational Culture Through Nonverbal Cue Signaling, Dirk M. Roskam
All Dissertations
Despite growing recognition of the significance of founders’ behaviors in shaping organizational culture, limited research has explored how founders’ non-verbal cues (NVCs) imprint culture during a venture’s formative stages. This qualitative case study examines how a founder’s NVCs, ranging from physical environment design to gestures and demeanor, are interpreted by employees and contribute to the imprinting of organizational culture. Drawing on imprinting theory, signaling theory, and the Organizational Culture Profile (OCP), the study triangulates data from semi-structured interviews, a focus group, and a literature review. Findings reveal that employees interpret 24 salient NVCs, grouped into themes of environmental values, people-centric …

Polymathy: The Foundational Source Of Creativity And Innovation., Michael Araki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In an era of mounting complexity and a growing need to transcend siloed thinking, this dissertation advances polymathy as a critical yet underexplored construct in the management and behavioral sciences. Polymathy is framed as an expansive approach to the pursuit, development, and application of knowledge, marked by the conjunction of breadth, depth, and integration. Building on a thought lineage that stretches from Ancient Greece through the Renaissance to the present day, this work shows that polymathy is neither a relic of the past nor an achievement reserved for a few—but a mode of being, thinking, and acting in the world …

This qualitative phenomenological study explored how cultural competency in small to medium-sized Black immigrant-owned healthcare practices in Texas affects internal communication and patient care. Through semi-structured interviews with nine clinical and administrative leaders in Dallas and Houston, five themes emerged: culturally competent leadership, intentional communication structures, language and interpretation practices, patient-centered cultural sensitivity, and the use of technology for adaptation. Findings suggest that culturally aware leadership and inclusive communication strategies foster team cohesion and improve patient trust and care. Participants reported adapting workflows to meet religious, language, and communication needs through human and technological tools. The study underscores embedding cultural …

Global Sport Business Journal
Editor Russell Field, through Winters of Discontent: The Winter Olympics and a Half Century of Protest and Resistance, offers the first focused academic inquiry into the myriad ways that individuals, organizations, and communities have resisted these sport mega-events. More specifically, each chapter contributor “chronicles the ways in which the issues raised by anti-Olympic advocates have increasingly become part of a mainstream discourse” (Field, 2025, p. 5). Various core themes run through the book including concern over public spending amid rising neoliberalism, the contested relationship between Indigenous self-determination and settler colonial domination, balancing local community priorities against the backdrop of Games-related …

The Effect Of Cognitive Biases And Organizational Constructs On Enterprise Resource Planning Implementation Success In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Pls-Sem Approach, Michael Davidson
Dissertations
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are crucial to enhancing organizational performance, efficiency, and strategic competitiveness in small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). ERP adoption in SMEs has been known to fail, with more than 75% of the implementations considered failures. These barriers are compounded by cognitive biases, such as temporal discounting (TD) and optimism bias (OB), which skew the strategic decision-making process. The framework suggested in this paper explains the relationships between top management support (TMS), information quality (IQ), system quality (SQ), user satisfaction (US), optimism bias (OB), and temporal discounting (TD) and their impact on ERP implementation success (EIS) and …

The Influence Of "Ifbb Pro" Designation On Consumer Decision-Making In Online Personal Training Services: An Experimental Investigation, Zehua Hei, Alan Morse
Global Sport Business Journal
The recent rising health awareness, social media occurrence, and digital access to fitness services promote the growth of online personal training. Drawing upon signaling theory, a recent rising group of trainers, “IFBB Pro” athletes, who are perceived as elite bodybuilders, often signal a high level of expertise and competency in fitness training. With content marketing as the background, posted content plays a key role in this process as social media platforms become increasingly popular for fitness professionals to market their personal training services and attract clients. However, scarce research exists to investigate how this designation influences consumer perceptions and purchase …
