A large population is dependent on fishery activity and capture fisheries is treated as the backbone of Sundarban economy. Sundarban boast around 172 species of fishes, 20 species of prawn and 44 species of crabs including two edible crabs. But fisheries in Sundarbans faces some difficult problems which have an impact on the biodiversity, sustainability and livelihood of fish resources and fisher folk viz. shrinking tiger prawn population, indiscriminate fish seed collection, lack of post harvest and other infrastructures, natural calamities such as …
The Performance Implications Of Ownership Driven Governance Reform, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan
The Performance Implications Of Ownership Driven Governance Reform, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper explores the performance impact of recent changes in foreign shareholdings and boardroom reforms in Japan. Empirical research on the impact of reform on the Japanese corporate governance system could provide useful lessons for their European counterparts who are themselves facing similar pressures to reform. We found that although participation of outside directors in strategic decision-making was associated with positive stock returns, the increase in the ratio of outside directors, the separation of the board members and executive officers, and the reduction of board size were not related to firm performance.

Entrepreneurship And Social Endeavours In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan
Entrepreneurship And Social Endeavours In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan

Many people would confine entrepreneurship to the business arena and entrepreneurs to profit enterprises. In truth, entrepreneurship can extend to all aspects of human activity as defined by Raymond Kao as “the process of doing something new and/or different to create wealth for oneself and to add value to the society” (Kao, 1993). Apart from entrepreneurship that is solely “for profit” and in the business sphere, there is social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship spans a continuum of community-based enterprises and entrepreneurial activities by volunteers for the good of their communities. It also includes philanthropic acts by successful individuals. While many may …

The Relativity Of Risk Assessments In Investment Decisions, Michael Sack Elmaleh
The Relativity Of Risk Assessments In Investment Decisions, Michael Sack Elmaleh
Michael Sack Elmaleh
The level of risk in investing in a closely held firm is related to the qualifications of the control managing investor. While there is generally a minimum threshold of expertise and capital that a control investor must possess, beyond this threshold the potential levels of expertise and capital can vary significantly. The level of enterprise risk is inversely related to the level of expertise and capital possessed by the control investor. The more resources and expertise the investor possesses, the less the operational risk. Thus enterprise risk is a relative and not an inherent fixed property of an enterprise. Furthermore, …
Family Businesses' Contribution To The U.S. Economy: A Closer Look, Joseph H. Astrachan, Melissa Carey Shanker
Family Businesses' Contribution To The U.S. Economy: A Closer Look, Joseph H. Astrachan, Melissa Carey Shanker
Faculty and Research Publications
In 1995, we were commissioned to conduct research on the impact of family businesses on the U.S. economy. A search of all relevant research led to the conclusion that the majority of existing data relating to family businesses' economic contributions were not grounded in empirical research, and the definitions used to distinguish family businesses from other enterprises were ambiguous or nonexistent. In 1996, we published a paper providing a framework for assessing the economic impact of family businesses across three ranges, defined by the degree of family involvement in the businesses. This paper revisits that research and updates and improves …
Operationalizing Technology Improvements In Product Development Decision-Making, Shantanu Bhattacharya, V. Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan
Operationalizing Technology Improvements In Product Development Decision-Making, Shantanu Bhattacharya, V. Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Achieving competitive advantage and price premiums in many technology-based markets requires the incorporation of current technology in new products. To do so, firms in hyper-competitive environments increasingly plan and design their products concurrent with the independent development and validation of underlying technologies. Simultaneous validation of a core technology has important implications for a company's product positioning and launch sequence decisions making these traditional marketing decisions relevant to operations managers. Prior research has shown that to minimize cannibalization in the absence of such improvements in technology, a firm should not launch low-end products before high-end products. However, concurrent evolution of technology …

Employing Service Learning In Community-University Partnership Program To Develop Local Msmes In Bungo And Tejo Regencies, Mona Novita, M. Syukri Ismail, Muhammad Solihin, Muhammad Asman
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
This paper illustrates the implementation of a community project developed based on a partnership between the community and the local university in Bungo and Tebo Regencies. The project aims to develop the local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as a strategic step to increase the regional economy, taking the form of a so- called Community–University Partnership Program in Bungo and Tebo Regencies. The Community–University Partnership methodology employs the Service Learning (SL) method to increase MSME actors’ competence in terms of financial literacy, product packaging, and marketing. The effectiveness of the SL-based Community–University Partnership Program was measured using a quantitative …
The Income Method Of Valuation: A False Analogy Between Bonds And Stocks, Michael Sack Elmaleh
The Income Method Of Valuation: A False Analogy Between Bonds And Stocks, Michael Sack Elmaleh
Michael Sack Elmaleh
The discounting of future income streams by a risk adjusted rate of return by proponents of the income method reflects a misplaced faith in the ability to project accurately future income streams and pick out the “right” rate of return. Future income streams are fairly reliably predictable when analyzing a debt instrument. However, equity investment future income streams are notoriously unpredictable. Similarly assessing the risk associated with realizing returns from a fixed security is comparatively easy in comparison with assessing the risks associated with equity returns. The widely used Beta has not proved to be a very stable measure of …

Do Investors Demand Higher Rates Of Return On Risky Investments In Closely Held Small Businesses?, Michael Sack Elmaleh
Michael Sack Elmaleh
Investors in small closely held firms often are oblivious to risk if the rewards are perceived to be sufficiently high. Risk may also be ignored because such investors seek more than just increased cash flow. These investors often seek higher order psychological returns such as job challenge and status.

While the buying and selling of businesses based on formulas may not be the soundest method of pricing a business the more rigorous methods do not always provide the best guidance either. Ideally prospective buyers should have knowledge of both formula methods and the more rigorous approaches.
Human Resource Slack As An Antecedent To Instilling The Entrepreneurial Mindset Within Department Of Defense Organizations, Jason A. Whittle
Human Resource Slack As An Antecedent To Instilling The Entrepreneurial Mindset Within Department Of Defense Organizations, Jason A. Whittle
Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Defense has been called to transform the way it fights, thinks and operates to more effectively counter the changing threats to the United States. Private organizations have long been faced with a similar need to be flexible to meet the dynamic market which they serve. The Office of Force Transformation has been tasked to facilitate the mandated transformation of the DoD. Based on literature on slack resources, slack may be a necessary tool for proper transformation to a more innovative and effective military.

Instilling An Entrepreneurial Mindset In Department Of Defense (Dod) Organizations: Evidence From Entrepreneurial Organizations In The Private Sector, Rochelle D. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Calls for transforming government and creating entrepreneurial cultures in non-profit motivated organizations are everywhere today. The primary method proposed for instilling an entrepreneurial mindset is to institute "best practices" or "lessons learned" from commercial firms that have characteristics similar to those of large government organizations. While the similarities between the private and public sector organizations are many, the differences (e.g. legal restrictions, missions, and motivation of members of the organization) are also notable. This exploratory study seeks to more clearly define the commonalities between the experiences of private sector firms and how those experiences can be captured to help DoD …
Modeling The Adoption Rates Of Manufacturing Technology Innovations By Small Us Manufacturers: A Longitudinal Investigation Feb. 2003, Pp. 351-366., Paul Swamidass
Paul Swamidass
This study provides conclusive evidence to support the view that small plants are slower than larger plants to adopt manufacturing innovations. This empirical study based on over 1000 US manufacturing plants engaged in producing discrete products, studies the adoption of manufacturing technologies in small plants relative to large plants between 1993 and 1997.
Under the assumption that small manufacturers are disadvantaged, several federal and state programs have been created to assist small manufacturers in acquiring and adopting manufacturing innovations. Through quantification of technology adoption in small manufacturing firms, this study’s findings reveal which manufacturing innovations are in greater need of …
Collaboration Among Smes As A Mechanism For Innovation: An Empirical Study, Mario J. B. Franco
Collaboration Among Smes As A Mechanism For Innovation: An Empirical Study, Mario J. B. Franco
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
The interest for collaboration among small and mediumsized enterprises and innovation has been highlighted, in recent times, due to the acceleration of technological changes and to increasing international competitiveness. Many small firms, with rigid structures and weak entrepreneurial dynamics, experienced difficulties in becoming innovators. Some of these firms can adopt collaborative agreements because these relationships enable them to get the necessary innovative activities, know-how, and exploit opportunities, which they cannot achieve alone. This study examines the motives for the formation of collaborative agreements in industrial Portuguese SMEs and presents some empirical evidence concerning collaboration as an important vehicle for the …

The Region And The Smaller Enterprise: A Discussion Of Appropriate Investigative Methodologies, Ian Pownall
The Region And The Smaller Enterprise: A Discussion Of Appropriate Investigative Methodologies, Ian Pownall
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Regional policy instruments are typically driven by economic rationales, from either a firm or industrial perspective. Yet too often, these rationales are taken as ex ante to the contexts within which firms and industries compete. Recent regional development research has urged a better link be developed between the individual, the firm, and their context, so as to understand the role of regions in supporting effective competitiveness of organizations. In this article, recent research themes are explored that may shed light on the nature of this relationship and that can be developed into an investigative methodology that could aid policy practitioners …

University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton
Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications
Technology transfer enables private industry and academia to make practical use of advanced research, development, and technical expertise. Indeed, universities are a rich source of science and technology that can support local government and business development as well as economic growth. Thus, it is essential for research universities to transfer their wisdom to the public for its use and benefit. Today, universities operate in an economic climate that requires both capital and knowledge; takes advantage of government technology initiatives (namely the Bayh- Dole Act);' and serves as a catalyst for the creation of a large number of new, incubated companies. …

High-Tech Transportation Corridors Are In Vogue: Proposed Federal Transportation Policy Amendments, Clovia Hamilton
Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications
When there is an economic downturn, cities are forced to develop a strategy to revitalize. Increasing the transfer of high technology into the marketplace stimulates the economy. High tech industries are industries that include relatively high percentages of scientific and technical workers, or industries that make relatively large expenditures in research and development. "[I]n difficult economic times, political stakeholders in the technology transfer process usually view success in economic impact terms, and often from short-term and parochial perspectives-how many jobs in my state next year?" Examples include the expansion of the suburban space economy in the 1980s that produced new …

Searching For Greater Variety In Strategic Thinking, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt
Conference papers
This paper proposes a use of the discursive approach to explicate variety in ways of strategic thinking. Such an explication of variety is both useful managerially in increasing awareness of greater discursive resources and also theoretically in critiquing views of strategic thinking as homogenous and organizationally contained. Ways of strategic thinking have been investigated using a variety of approaches including expertise perspectives (Voss, Greene et al. 1983), cognitive mapping (Eden, Jones et al. (1979); Huff (1990) ) and upper echelon theory (Hambrick 1998). More recently the linguistic turn in organizational sciences (Alvesson and Kärreman 2000), and the study of strategy …

Poster Summary -- Alliances Between Newcomer Firms And Established Firms: A Sense Making Response Mechanism For Entrepreneurial Firms In Uncertain Environments, Sharon A. Alvarez, Baniyelme Zoogah, Douglas A. Bosse
Management Faculty Publications
This study is organized around two basic research questions. First, how do entrepreneurial firms use their alliances with large firms to make sense of their world? Second, how does sensemaking in entrepreneurial firms impact their alliance success and ultimately firm success? In the tradition of a sensemaking perspective this paper seeks to understand how particular cues are singled out from other experiences (Weick 1979), how the interpretations and meanings of these cues result in certain behaviors leading to new firm success or failure.
