IIMB Management Review
In an email chat with IIMB Management Review, V C Burman talked about the responsibilities of the family in family businesses, the need to professionalise and how Dabur has successfully gone about it. The vital move in tackling all the challenges that professionalisation brought in its wake, he explained, was the establishment of the Family Council. He also touched on the opportunities in the pharmaceutical and ayurvedic sectors, the initiatives Dabur has taken to help improve the quality of ayurvedic products; and its contributions towards conservation and sustainable development. Vivek C Burman, Chairman, Dabur India, is the great grandson of …

Entrepreneurship: The Social Science View Edited By Richard Swedberg, Oxford University Press, 2000, Pp 403. Price: Rs 545, Puneet Arora
IIMB Management Review
Entrepreneurship: A Social Science View explores entrepreneurship through social, cultural, organizational, and economic perspectives. The essays challenge the belief that entrepreneurship flourishes only under favorable conditions, with Gerschenkron’s theory of substitution showing how societies can compensate for missing elements. Rose Kanter highlights the role of organizational culture in fostering innovation through idea generation, support, implementation, and diffusion. Ronald Burt emphasizes social capital and networks as valuable entrepreneurial resources. Other contributors examine culture, ethnicity, industrial networks, market timing, and public policy. Overall, the book demonstrates that entrepreneurship is deeply influenced by social structures and relationships, making it a rich interdisciplinary field.
Amar Bhide : A New Take On New Businesses In Conversation With N Balasubramanian, Rishikesha T Krishnan, Mathew Manimala, S Raghunath And Douglas Stoddart., Amar Bhide
IIMB Management Review
In the beginning there was the traditional rags-to-riches myth. The myth now prevalent in the business world is about the business school style startup – the well planned, well financed, well managed startup, where an experienced manager from Microsoft or Intel has a big idea, comes up with a plan, raises millions of dollars from a venture capital fund, recruits a top notch team, puts it all together using the kind of business management techniques taught at business schools, and in fairly short order turns it into a successful business. Amar Bhide, whose book, The Origin and Evolution of New …

IIMB Management Review
Venture funding today is geared to entrepreneurial initiatives that are innovative, address new markets, are highly scalable and thus growth oriented. On a time dimension, the sooner this is achieved the better. Given this scenario, successful technology entrepreneurs must possess good domain knowledge and deeprooted technical expertise. The recent history of high-tech successes has shown us that in the above conditions, academic research based startups and entrepreneurs from academic environments have been highly successful with astounding contributions towards wealth creation.
Venture Capitalism : A Close-Up, Anand Sudarshan
Venture Capitalism : A Close-Up, Anand Sudarshan
IIMB Management Review
The subject of venture capital and venture capitalists has captured the imagination of the public at large over the last five years. VCs have been both deified and pilloried, and have probably deserved their share of bouquets and brickbats. Undoubtedly, this exposure was in large measured fuelled by the high tech boom, the Silicon Valley, and our own obsession with all things IT.

A Fresh Look At It Entrepreneurship In India, Vinay Deshpande
IIMB Management Review
Since the early nineties, the Indian IT sector has distinguished itself by virtually becoming an engine of growth for the entire economy of the country, ranking amongst the highest export revenue earning sectors. What needs to be clarified, though, is that this sector has been largely made up of software services companies that have been based on the availability of a large pool of low-cost manpower with leading-edge skills, and have benefitted from the worldwide shortage of skilled IT manpower. Consequently, owing to the low risk and relatively low capital investment requirements and the low business risk associated, they have …

The Origin And Evolution Of New Businesses By Amar V Bhide, Oxford University Press, Pp 412., Suparna Mitra
IIMB Management Review
In The Origin and Evolution of New Businesses, his second book, Amar Bhide, whose impressive credentials include a doctorate and an MBA from the Harvard Business School, a BTech from IIT and a consultancy at McKinsey, takes a refreshingly analytical and well-researched look at the marvel of entrepreneurship and the effect it has on the larger economic system.
Credit And Banking: What Every Small Entrepreneur (And Banker) Must Know By K C Nanda, Response Books, New Delhi, 1999, Pp 289, P Rice: Rs 395 (Cloth) Rs 225 (Paper)., M S Sriram
IIMB Management Review
There have been some very interesting books in the recent past on the small industry. With competition increasing and protection for various sectors being selectively removed, it is time that we looked at some sectors which have been accorded protection in the past - like co-operatives and small industries- and see how they have been performing. It is also important for us to get some insights into recent research and practice in these sectors. In this
context, K C Nanda's book raises our level of expectation. However as one reads through the pages and pages of casual conclusions and off-the-cuff …

Entrepreneurial Strategies And Policies: The Innovator’S Choice: By Mathew J Manimala, New Delhi: Sage Publications, 1999, Rajnish Karki
IIMB Management Review
The book is an original and comprehensive work of research on entrepreneurship. It is an important contribution on the subject, and the work is certainly among the most rigorous management research done in India. The research departs from conventional research on entrepreneurship in two significant ways one, it focuses on the question of ‘what entrepreneurs do’ rather than on ‘what entrepreneurs are’ two, it empirically tests an existing typology of entrepreneurs. The case survey methodology, though not very common in management research, brings quantitative rigour to a work based on qualitative data.

IIMB Management Review
Compliments of the season. As we go through the 50th year of India's independence, may 1998 be the harbinger of success and well-being to the country, and indeed, to the world at large. Small and Medium Enterprises have been the engines of growth in several economies. India is no exception. SMEs help to add customer value in ways that larger organisations may not always be able to replicate. There are, of course, aberrations, as, for example, when categorisation into SMEs is dependent not upon their inherent economic competencies and capabilities, but on the need to subserve political or other societal …

Since Independence, Small Scale Industries (SSIs), have been playing a stellar role in the economic development of the country. SSIs account for more than a third of the total manufacturing output and generate almost 35 per cent of the country's exports. Importantly, they provide employment to more than ten million Indians. With the onset of economic liberalisation in the country-since 1991- even SSIs have been trying to redefine their role and adapt effectively to the changing macro-economic environment, where market forces are calling the tune. The Abid Hussain Committee, which was constituted to re-define the role of SSIs in the …

Indian Software Industry: A Diagnostic Analysis, Premchander
IIMB Management Review
With the introduction of stringent requirements relating to foreign ownership of businesses in India in the early seventies, the information technology boom began in the country with alert entrepreneurs capitalising quickly on this development. Aided by the international demand for software and among other things, the low-cost availability of skilled workforce, the Indian software industry grew rapidly. But today, several of the earlier competitive advantages are being eroded. A profile of the industry has been drawn up assessing its vulnerability through its strengths and weaknesses, the threats and opportunities it faces, and the value drivers in the industry.
