1% Left Of 100: Taino History And Puerto Rican Identity, Alanis Gonzalez Torres Mar 2022

1% Left Of 100: Taino History And Puerto Rican Identity, Alanis Gonzalez Torres

Undergraduate Research Symposium

1% left of 100 is a documentary poetics research project exploring the confluence of identity, family, and language. Crafted in a hybrid format that mixes Spanish and English according to my personal idiolect, which is itself a product of my heritage as a Puerto Rican, Africa, native Taino American, this poem engages with exciting new approaches to thinking about race which liberate us from talking about physical features and takes us instead toward race as a social fact, a product of culture, history, and family. I seek to intervene in a narrative of American history that, though it teaches about …

Rosal De María By Soror Maria Do Céu: A Pedagogical Edition And Literary Analysis, Bailey Willden Mar 2022

Rosal De María By Soror Maria Do Céu: A Pedagogical Edition And Literary Analysis, Bailey Willden

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Soror Maria do Céu’s Rosal de María, second of the five plays published in her work Triunfo do Rosario, is an exemplary work of early modern convent drama because the didactic, allegorical purposes of the play interact with rich symbolism and mastery of the literary conventions of the day. Written to perform as part of the celebrations for the Feast of the Rosary, Rosal de Maria fulfills the same purpose of the Rosary itself, leading worshipers in their contemplation on the life of Christ. She creates a living Rosary on the stage by employing elements like floral imagery, transferred classicism …

They will feel Burgos’s deep and intricate emotions and understand that it’s okay to struggle as long as they remain true to themselves. A detailed history of Burgos’s life accompanies the translated poems in …

“It’S Not Just About Improving My Spanish.” Student Perceptions Of Service Learning, Farah Ali Feb 2022

“It’S Not Just About Improving My Spanish.” Student Perceptions Of Service Learning, Farah Ali

Global Language Studies Faculty publications

In the last few decades, service learning (SL) has emerged as an instructional model that facilitates connections between learning experiences in and outside the classroom, and highlights the socio-political nature of language use (Grim, 2010; Bettencourt, 2015; Moreno-López et. al, 2017). However, its effective and relevant curricular implementation remains a challenge for educators. This exploratory paper examines how SL impacts advanced learners’ beliefs, attitudes, and motivation towards learning Spanish, as well as their ability to connect their service experiences with course content. Findings show that learners evaluate service experiences through a proficiency-based lens, where the success of their experiences depended …

El Ascendiente Latinoamericano En La Literatura Euskaldun: “Realismo Mágico”, “Literatura Mundial” Y La Emergencia Del Campo Literario Vasco, Gustavo Jimenez Vaquero

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My dissertation, “El ascendiente latinoamericano en la literatura euskaldun: ‘realismo mágico’, ‘literatura mundial’ y la emergencia del campo literario vasco” (“The Latin American Ascendency of Basque Literature: ‘magical realism,’ ‘world literature’ and the emergence of the Basque literary field”), analyzes the influence of Latin American literature in the formation of modern Basque literature vis-a-vis contemporary debates of World Literature. Contradicting the nationalist agenda governing the metanarrative elaborated by Basque literary histories, my work uncovers the Latin American ascendency of modern Basque literature in the canonical works of a group of Basque writers who played a key role in the modernization …
