With this research I locate Angeles Mastretta's novel Arráncame la vida in the Bildungsroman genre, examine the particular forces influencing the protagonist's development and gain insight into her process of identity formation. This modern Bildungsroman portrays the fate of a woman in the male dominated world of post-revolutionary Mexico. I analyze how class, gender, historical moment, psychological and cultural influences are woven into the intriguing formation of the heroine, Catalina, variously constraining or propelling her forward in her quest for development.

I argue that the heroine transcends the limiting factors in her patriarchal environment, struggling against culturally sanctioned deception, confining …

Isabel Archer, the protagonist of Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady, and Gertrudis (Tula), the protagonist of Miguel de Unamuno's La T’a Tula are strong, able-bodied women who must combat the restraints of a corseting society. James and Unamuno write with the same agenda to critique how the turn-of-the-century society affected the lives of women. Although heroic in their determination to live life, both Isabel and Gertrudis fall victim to the society that reveres freedom more than passion. According to Spanish film maker Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, there is an intimate relationship between the family and the state, with the traits of the family mirroring those of the state in which it exists: "la primera célula del Estado es la familia, y si el Estado, por definición, es opresivo, la familia es igualmente opresiva" (García Fernández 331). I explored the relationship between poetry and politics in Panama. Panama is a Western Hemisphere anomaly in that no other nation in the Americas has been so dominated by another as has Panama by the United States. As a result of this hegemonous relationship, Panamanians have developed an intense mistrust and hatred for the United States. This is clearly seen in their poetry. The Fall of Sendero Luminoso evaluates the rise and decline of the Shining Path movement, or Sendero Luminoso, in Peru. The social insurrection began in 1980 and seeks to establish a communist state in Peru through the use of guerrilla warfare. The 1992 capture of Sendero's leader, Abimael Guzman, significantly weakened the organization and its influence in Peruvian society has diminished. My thesis attempts to postulate the reasons for the collapse of the organization with a particular focus on how the practices and policies of Sendero inhibited the revolution from establishing a deep social foundation. Spain's Gross Domestic Product throughout the 1960's advanced at 7.5%, ranking it the fastest growing country in Europe, and second most rapidly growing country in the world. Industry replaced agriculture as the dominant sector, Spain adopted an export-oriented trading agenda, and the nation finally became recognized as a competitor in the international market. What led to this "economic miracle"? Indecent Proposal discusses the motives and results of the 1959 Stabilization Plan of Spain, and challenges the claim that this decisive government policy of the Franco regime was the single most decisive element in propelling Spain into the 20th century. Densidad De Anglicismos En El Léxico Disponible De La República Dominicana, Orlando Alba

En este artículo se presenta un análisis cuantitativo con el propósito de descubrir la densidad de los anglicismos en el léxico disponible dominicano de acuerdo con diversas variables. Se descubre que el factor más relevante para motivar la presencia de los anglicismos es la diferencia de centros de interés. En unos campos, la densidad es alta (medios de transporte, juegos, el vestido), pero en otros es muy baja e incluso, nula (animales, el cuerpo humano).

Clerical sexual incontinence was a prevalent satirical theme during the Middle Ages manifested by anticlerical sentiment towards reprobate clergymen and the laws that they disobeyed. This satirical genre of literature targeted not only the cleric of a small town, but bishops and cardinals who were also abusers of canon law.

The anticlerical theme originated in Western Europe in the time of Constantine when early Christianity was competing with many religions for dominance. In the fourth century, Constantine, through the Edict of Milan, granted religious tolerance to all, thus allowing Christianity to become a major religion. Clerical celibacy originated from the …

The purpose of this investigation is to examine formal and informal resources available for teaching Spanish to health care professionals mainly in the Portland, Oregon area. Seventeen different Spanish-for-health-care-professionals texts are commented on by the author, some of which are the texts used in medical Spanish language classes. The majority of the texts contain little if any instruction on cultural aspects which affect the Latino patient population's health care behaviors and decision making. The purpose of the present study is to show that the metaphor, flor, of Pre-Conquest Nahuatl literature means much more than the most widely accepted rendering of that metaphor that classic scholars such as Miguel Leon-Portilla and Angel M. Garibay have attributed to it. Typically flor is referred to as meaning poetry.
