Acuña De Figueroa Y La Traducción Como Elemento Conservador [Acuña De Figueroa And Translation As A Conservative Tool], Gabriel González Núñez

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Féminas Speaking Up: Three Papers On Feminine Transgender Identities, Gender Identity Activism, And Language Reform In Lima, Peru, Ernesto Cuba

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this three-paper dissertation, I explore the linguistic and discursive practices of Féminas, a leading transgender rights activist organization based in Lima, Peru. Building on scholarship on language ideologies (Irvine & Gal, 2000), queer linguistics (Motschenbacher, 2011), and socio-onomastics (Ainiala & Östman, 2017), I analyze the role that language beliefs and language-in-use plays in performing local (trans)gender identities and shaping grassroots politics within this specific community of practice (Eckert & McConnell-Ginet, 1992). Based on an extensive corpus of semi-structured interviews and ethnographic material gathered during my long-term investigation with Féminas, I present three studies exploring distinct –though related– ideologically-driven sociolinguistic …

Based on Lucrecia de León’s oneiric records, this study focuses on three words of Arab origin in the Inquisition manuscripts of her persecution and imprisonment. The written documents of this young woman’s dreams, collected and conserved by scribes and inquisitors at the end of the sixteenth century, comprises 415 narrative fragments, dated between 1587 and 1590. The main goal of this article is to analyze the following three Arabisms: alboroto, alcuzas and alpargatas, as examples of the Arabic influence on the Castilian vocabulary of the time.

Gran Casino (1947) De Luis Buñuel: La Inexistencia Del Petróleo, Enrique Muñoz-Mantas Aug 2024

Gran Casino (1947) De Luis Buñuel: La Inexistencia Del Petróleo, Enrique Muñoz-Mantas

Languages & Global Studies Faculty Publications

Mi …

Trabajo De Auto Y Trans-Ficción En La Narrativa Chilena Reciente: Abordajes Y Tramitaciones Del Yo(T) En Iván Monalisa Ojeda Y Ariel Florencia Richards, Fernando A. Blanco

Other Faculty Research and Publications

This article explores two literary texts written by two Chilean trans or non-binary individuals in which the processes of constructing and subjectivizing the Self are framed by their material and symbolic conditions of existence, differentiated by class, the type of work (labor) performed, and the political and aesthetic expectations of their own writing project. In the case of Monalisa Ojeda, the autofiction narrative (journal) responds to the reality of travesti/trans migrant, sex-working communities in 1990s NYC, while in the case of Ariel Florencia Richards, the novel explores the complex relationships between an upper middle class mother and her trans daughter …

Language Analysis Via The Run And Flattened Statistics On Permutations, Jennifer Elder, Pamela E. Harris, Anthony Simpson Jul 2024

Language Analysis Via The Run And Flattened Statistics On Permutations, Jennifer Elder, Pamela E. Harris, Anthony Simpson

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

A permutation π in Sn can be decomposed into its runs π = τ1τ2 . . . τk, where a run of π is a maximal contiguous subsequence whose elements are in increasing order. If the first values of each run are in increasing order, then π is said to be flattened. Motivated by the study of flattened permutations, we study the words in the Danish, German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, and Norwegian languages. In each language considered, our work provides the following: a list of the longest flattened words, histograms for the proportion …

Una Casa Para Una: Construyendo Identidades Políticas Y Bilingüismo En A House Of My Own: Stories From My Life De Sandra Cisneros, Vanessa M. Lent

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Noches Lúgubres De Cadalso: De Lúgubre A Salubre, José Sarzi Amade Jul 2024

Noches Lúgubres De Cadalso: De Lúgubre A Salubre, José Sarzi Amade

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour Jul 2024

Basil Bunting And The Challenges Of Literary Translation From Persian Into English: A Case Of Rūdhakī, Emadeddin Naghipour

Languages and Cultures Publications

The purpose of this study is to analyze Basil Bunting's literary translation. It turns to the theories of translation by Steiner, Benjamin, and Eco, among others, to study Bunting’s translation of Rūdhakī’s ‘Dandaniyyeh’ poem, a 10th century qaṣīdah replete with mesmerizing musicality and with a form galvanized in its originating language, time, and locale. A deep contrastive analysis of its translation into English by the poet, Bunting, shows the difficulties that can arise from literal translations of classical Persian poetry.

Islas De Resistencia: Pensamiento Archipielágico En Las Poéticas Canarias Y Caribeñas Del Siglo Xxi, Laura García García

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation explores contemporary literary manifestations in the Canary Islands and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, with a stronger focus on the islands of Tenerife and Puerto Rico. Through an archipelagic approach, this study delves into the analysis of Los lenguas cortadas (2020) by Cirilo Leal, Boat People (2005) by Mayra Santos-Febres, Panza de burro (2020) by Andrea Abreu and PR3 Aguirre (2018) by Marta Aponte Alsina. The analysis states that these literary works build alternative forms of affective archives of archipelagic memory. In this sense, the objects of study participate into a sort of “poetics of resistance,” resignifying racial, ethnic, and …

El Pasado Está Enfrente: Descifrando La Importancia De Las Perspectivas Femeninas A Través De Tiempo En “Mujer Negra” Y Nostalgia De La Luz, Catherine Van Wey Jun 2024

El Pasado Está Enfrente: Descifrando La Importancia De Las Perspectivas Femeninas A Través De Tiempo En “Mujer Negra” Y Nostalgia De La Luz, Catherine Van Wey

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Time Ripens On The Counter: A Literary History Of The Americas, Judah Rubin Jun 2024

Time Ripens On The Counter: A Literary History Of The Americas, Judah Rubin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The tumultuous years of the 1970s and 1980s are generally seen as marking the ends of the New Left in the United States and the Americas at large. With shifts afoot in US policy that would see the drawdown and close of the Vietnam War, increased subversion and infiltration of Left-wing movements, these decades are often remembered as a holding pattern and, later, nadir in progressive, not to mention revolutionary, gains. The same was true, if not amplified, across the Americas where, tens of thousands were murdered, imprisoned and disappeared across the Southern Cone and into the Andes, and where …

Alianzas Antimodernas: Estudios Del Cine Español Del Proceso 15m, Pedro Cabello Del Moral Jun 2024

Alianzas Antimodernas: Estudios Del Cine Español Del Proceso 15m, Pedro Cabello Del Moral

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Anti-Modern Alliances: Studies of Spanish Cinema of the 15M Process mobilizes decolonial theory to shed new light upon the politics of the 15M (or Indignados) movement and its visual culture. It tackles anti-modern critiques as embodied in film characters who have been traditionally relegated to the margins of modernity’s grand narratives. The research corpus encompasses a diverse body of works –documentaries, fiction films, activist video essays and their paratexts, which I critically interrogate in dialogue with contemporary feminist, anti-racist, decolonial, anti-neoliberal and anti-ableist debates. Thus, the dissertation examines the methods by which audiovisual works from the past ten years have …

Abstract

An Abundance of Caution

3 puffs and breathing stabilizes...

Must have been the pollen last night.

An eerie sense of emptiness takes over

And incidentally

The inability to express and verbalize any articulated thought.

I seek sensations...experiences. To indulge.

The fascination with dreamscapes hails from the daunting lack of them.

I listen, imagine, and process scenarios around me

In a precarious attempt to interpret and translate instances into something meaningful.

El Eslabón Perdido De La Pedagogía Jesuita, Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano May 2024

El Eslabón Perdido De La Pedagogía Jesuita, Alberto Núñez, Josep M. Lozano

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone May 2024

Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper analyzes food as a memory device in the novel Doña Flor y sus dos maridos by the Brazilian author Jorge Amado. Set in San Salvador du Bahía in northern Brazil, the novel follows Doña Flor after her husband Vadinho dies. Food and drink – considered here as folkloric forms – play a central role not only in her exploration of memories of her husband but also in the broader bahiana society with its mix of different ethnicities (African, indigenous, European). Drawing on Felix Coluccio’s and Dan Ben-Amos notions of folklore and literature and Arjun Appadurai’s exploration of the …

Marvelous Ordinariness: Re-Engaging With Realism’S Social Function, Miranda Ochoa Natera May 2024

Marvelous Ordinariness: Re-Engaging With Realism’S Social Function, Miranda Ochoa Natera

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

Against Romanticism, European literary realism of the 19th century aimed to provide an objective representation of reality through mimesis that could capture the truth in an objective way. Yet, its positivist approach severely narrowed down the complexity of truth, reality, and the mundane by wrongfully drawing the universal from the particular. A new way of engaging with realist literature from any time period, called Marvelous Ordinariness, rearranges this triad in ways that expand our understanding of our own and other realities portrayed. Using Alejo Carpentier’s description of “lo real maravilloso,” Marvelous Ordinariness unfolds in three layers that resemble Carl Jung’s …

Overregularization Of Irregular Spanish Verbal Morphology: The Cases Of 2sg Preterit And Irregular Past Participles, Elisabeth Baker Martínez

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation investigates a widely observed phenomenon in child language acquisition: overregularization, which occurs when a child applies a regular linguistic pattern where an irregular form is expected (Bybee, 2015), for example, when a child overregularizes irregular 1sg Spanish ‘I know’ as sabo. This dissertation adds to the research on the overregularization of Spanish verbal morphology. The population of focus is Spanish-speaking children ranging from the ages of 1;10 – 12;4 with different language backgrounds (e.g., monolingual Spanish children, U.S. child heritage speakers). The studies included address the development of two Spanish morphological forms by focusing on children’s …

Madre Tierra: Black Women And Environmental (In)Justice On The Pacific Coast Of Colombia, Kache Claytor

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation tracks the stories of Black Colombian women, mothers, and children in relation to mining, and especially illegal mining, to highlight the intersections of gender, class, race, space, and time amid (un)natural environmental catastrophes in contemporary Colombia. Black Colombians have an interdependent relationship with the earth and also have rights to ancestral lands, territories, and natural resources according to Law 70 of 1993, which established collective rights for Black communities. The failure to recognize this has led to increased forced internal migration and expropriation in Black territories because of illegal mining. Nevertheless, in this dissertation, I spotlight how Black …
