Aurality As Methexis And The Rise Of Castilian Literature: The Case Of The Siete Partidas, Maristela Verastegui Feb 2018

Aurality As Methexis And The Rise Of Castilian Literature: The Case Of The Siete Partidas, Maristela Verastegui

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Participation is the engine of cultural production. In the case of literature, the privileged modality that enables participation is auditory perception. In order to articulate a theory of literary cultural production based on auditory perception, participation needs to be analyzed in the context of Platonic methexis, understood as an embodied experience facilitated by brain mechanisms of sensory processing and cognition, which manifest in specific ways in written texts. The Siete Partidas, the first complete and systematic legal code of the Western World, provides the perfect case study to test a theory of literary cultural production based on methexis via …

Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s History of the Incas (1572). A Critical Study and Annotated Edition.

by Aleksín H. Ortega

Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa wrote his polemic and undoubtedly political History of the Incas at the request of Francisco de Toledo (Viceroy of Peru, 1569-1581). Toledo wanted to deliver to the Spanish King a version of Incan history which could subsequently be used as an ideological tool in the search of legal and moral arguments to defend the Andean colonization by the Spanish monarchy. Since his arrival to the Peruvian territories, Toledo embarked on a long personal visit to …

Marginalidad Y Subversión En Tres Novelas De Juan Filloy De La Década De 1930, Sonia M. Tejada Feb 2018

Marginalidad Y Subversión En Tres Novelas De Juan Filloy De La Década De 1930, Sonia M. Tejada

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation focuses on the concepts of marginality and subversion in three novels written by Juan Filloy in the 1930s: ¡Estafen! (1932), Op Oloop (1934) and Caterva (1937). I study these novels in the context of the avant-garde movement of the 1920s and 1930s. I analyze the transformation that the concepts of marginality and subversion undergo when they are explored within the context of the avant-garde aesthetics, instead of that of social realism. I contrast Filloy’s approach to these themes with those of the novelists of the preceding decades. More importantly, I compare and contrast Filloy’s novels to Roberto Arlt’s …

La Melancolía De Juan Ramón Jiménez: Un Estudio Emotivo, Carmen Valenzuela Cervantes Feb 2018

La Melancolía De Juan Ramón Jiménez: Un Estudio Emotivo, Carmen Valenzuela Cervantes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study addresses Juan Ramón Jiménez's melancholia, a defining feature of his life and work. I argue that melancholia both motivated and limited his writing.

In this thesis, my avowedly psychoanalytic critique attempts to add new ideas to the myriad studies of this significant writer and his work.

By employing techniques developed by the school of Modern Psychoanalysis, with its focus on bottled up aggression, believed to motivate attacks against the self, J.R.J.'s defenses will be studied.

In order to protect and strengthen fragile ego states, modern analysts respect defenses and use what they call joining and mirroring techniques. Herein …

Huérfanos De Orfeo: Poesía Y Música En La Cultura De Los Siglos De Oro, Lorena Uribe Bracho Feb 2018

Huérfanos De Orfeo: Poesía Y Música En La Cultura De Los Siglos De Oro, Lorena Uribe Bracho

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is an attempt to elucidate some aspects of one of the central issues in the history of lyric poetry, which is the complicated interlace of connections between poetry and music. It focusses on the case of early modern Spain, and it studies a large corpus of poetry in Spanish from 1500 to 1700. The corpus includes Renaissance and Baroque poems of many genres and from many sources, both printed and manuscript, by canonical and by lesser known poets, all of which engage with music and musical practice.

I address the questions of how music is involved in poetry’s …

Aesth/Ethics Of Distance: (Un)Veiling Grief In Rosa Montero’S La Ridícula Idea De No Volver A Verte, Deirdre Kelly

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter analyses the generically hybrid auto/biographical grief memoir, La ridícula idea de no volver a verte (2013), by the well-known contemporary Spanish author and journalist, Rosa Montero (b. Madrid, 1951), as a singular text within the Spanish tradition of life writing. The book traces a number of parallels between Montero and her biographical subject, the Polish scientist and two-times Nobel prize winner, Marie Curie—particularly regarding their respective grieving processes in widowhood. This chapter contextualises Montero and her text within the Spanish tradition of life writing and discusses Montero’s ethics and aesthetics of distance and how she negotiates with the …

Prefatory Conventions And Invention: Rereading Borges's Prologue To La Invención De Morel, Stephen D. Gingerich Jan 2018

Prefatory Conventions And Invention: Rereading Borges's Prologue To La Invención De Morel, Stephen D. Gingerich

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Prologues traditionally present works through a series of conventional gestures: introducing the author, providing contextual information and otherwise preparing a reader for proper understanding of the work. In this sense, they appear to reinforce a classic distinction between the philosophical text, whose words efface themselves in the act of understanding and the literary text, which resists such neglect of textuality and demands rereading. In a variety of ways throughout his work, Borges questions the neat distinction between literature and philosophy, and “Prefatory Conventions and Invention” examines how he does this in his prologues. After examining theory of the prologue in …

Exploring The Perceptions Of Novice Spanish Students In Blended Courses, Ana I. Capanegra Phd Jan 2018

Exploring The Perceptions Of Novice Spanish Students In Blended Courses, Ana I. Capanegra Phd

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

The present research aims to gauge novice college Spanish students’ perceptions of blended courses to help the design and teaching of blended learning. Blended learning shifts from teacher-centered classes to a learner-centered focus (Hartman, Dziuban & Moskal, 1999; Morgan 2002). There is also more emphasis on peer-to-peer learning (Collis, 2003) since information can be easily shared. The participants of the study had no prior experience taking blended courses. The 14 participants were given an anonymous questionnaire at the end of the semester to explore their perceptions of hybrid learning in order to enhance the set-up of the courses. The questionnaire …

Musical Expression And Spanish Nationalism In Selected Works Of Tomás Bretón, Brent Matthew Darnold Jan 2018

Musical Expression And Spanish Nationalism In Selected Works Of Tomás Bretón, Brent Matthew Darnold

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis examines the creation of a Spanish National Identity during the late nineteenth century within the orchestral works of Tomás Bretón. Style analysis and the use of musical narratological methods place these works in the context of Spain’s turbulent nineteenth century and its new formation of national identity comparable to those that had been formed across the rest of Europe. The two conflicting styles that Bretón employed in his compositions represent two different approaches to the establishment of a national identity during the period. Bretón’s own intent with these works and their actual reception by the Spanish public are …

Memory And The Realization Of The Nothingness. On A Letter Of Vittorio Sereni To Giuseppe Ungaretti, Stefano Giannini Jan 2018

Memory And The Realization Of The Nothingness. On A Letter Of Vittorio Sereni To Giuseppe Ungaretti, Stefano Giannini

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

The problematic relationship of Giuseppe Ungaretti (1888-1970) with Alexandria of Egypt – his city of birth – sheds light on the interplay between memory and oblivion in his poetry and prose. The shuttling back and forth between these poles marks the nature of his unfulfilled desire to recreate a lost Alexandrian atmosphere. In Ungaretti’s works, language opacity is coupled with his attempts to represent a city—as he writes—that is suffocated by the sun and whose hidden ancient port is submerged in the depth of the sea. Blinding light and the darkness of the deep waters make the understanding of Ungaretti’s …

The authors represent three different types of academic institutions in the United States: a private research university (Brown University), a …

Las Isabeles De Rosario Ferré Y Manuel Ramos Otero: Modelos De Desconstrucción De Género Y Sexualidad En La Literatura Puertorriqueña De La Década Del Setenta, Tania Carrasquillo Hernández Jan 2018

Las Isabeles De Rosario Ferré Y Manuel Ramos Otero: Modelos De Desconstrucción De Género Y Sexualidad En La Literatura Puertorriqueña De La Década Del Setenta, Tania Carrasquillo Hernández

Faculty Publications

This essay analyzes the literary representation of Isabel Luberza Oppenheimer in the short stories “Cuando las mujeres quieren a los hombres” by Rosario Ferré and “La última plena que bailó Luberza” by Manuel Ramos Otero, both originally published in the seventh edition of the literary journal Zona. Carga y Descarga (1972–1975). Both stories, I argue, appropriate this historical character to transgress the heteronormativity imposed by the hegemonic power and to allow new representations for women and the LGBTQ community in the Puerto Rican literature of the seventies.

Pairing preservation with analytical endeavors, the corpus for the present analysis consists of 345 digital objects that include one or more iterations of the personal name of the mother and daughter of a Mexican American family that migrated from Zacatecas, Mexico, to the American Midwest, during the first half of the 20th century. Data were analyzed along the following dimensions: self-presentation, language(s), geographical location, temporality, public/private space, and type of text. At the same time, we describe the challenges involved in encoding names that follow different naming conventions, that were produced by speakers of two different languages, and that changed …

Inefabilidad Y «Percepción Espiritual» En San Juan De La Cruz: 'No Halla Modo Ni Manera Ni Símil' [Nii,17,3], Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

La Ciudad De Las Letradas: Reescribiendo Santo Domingo En La Narrativa Femenina Urbana Dominicana Del Nuevo Milenio, Lucía M. Montás Jan 2018

La Ciudad De Las Letradas: Reescribiendo Santo Domingo En La Narrativa Femenina Urbana Dominicana Del Nuevo Milenio, Lucía M. Montás

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

In the last few decades, Dominican female writers have contributed significantly to the literary representation of the city of Santo Domingo and urban life. This dissertation studies how these female writers produce a cultural paradigm for criticizing the urban crisis in the Dominican Republic that at times is at odds with much narrative written by men and with key concepts in Urban Theory that are taken for granted. The authors I study, Ángela Hernández, Emilia Pereyra, Emelda Ramos, Aurora Arias and Rita Indiana Hernández, understand the city and redefine the urban model by expressing their dissatisfaction in the civilizing and …

Hibridación Y Subversión De Arquetipos Femeninos Latinoamericanos En Alfonsina Storni, Gabriela Mistral Y Silvina Ocampo, Aned Ladino Jan 2018

Hibridación Y Subversión De Arquetipos Femeninos Latinoamericanos En Alfonsina Storni, Gabriela Mistral Y Silvina Ocampo, Aned Ladino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social, political, and economic transformations contributed to redefine gender roles at the beginning of the twentieth century. In Latin America, Alfonsina Storni (1889-1938), Gabriela Mistral (1892-1957) and Silvina Ocampo (1906-1993) produced a hybrid narrative that challenged heteronormative conventions. In dialogue with a global realignment, they advocated for the rights of mestiza, indigenous, and working class subjects. This thesis proposes that the authors participated in a worldwide transformation that established women as historical agents. The research incorporates poems, essays, and short stories to map the emergence of independent, clever, and ambiguous models of femininity. They deployed traditional archetypes, such as the …

A Sociophonetic Study Of /S/ Weakening In Andalusian Spanish, Elisa Taylor Jan 2018

A Sociophonetic Study Of /S/ Weakening In Andalusian Spanish, Elisa Taylor

Scripps Senior Theses

The phenomenon of /s/ weakening is common among many varieties of Spanish, from Latin America to southern Spain (Lipski (2011), Samper Padilla (2011)). This project will focus specifically on coda /s/ weakening in Andalusian Spanish, the social factors that influence it, and the language ideologies surrounding the dialect. Previous research has found that social factors influencing /s/ weakening include social class, gender, and education level (Lipski (2011), Samper Padilla (2011), Holmquist (2008), Terrell (1981), Fontanella de Weinberg (1973)). Studies on /s/ weakening in Andalusian Spanish have mainly focused on the functional compensation for the loss of /s/, but little research …

La Aculturación En La Comprensión Lectora De Los Estudiantes Universitarios: La Valoración En El Uso Polifónico De Las Citas, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

Privileging The Oriental In Paco Bezerra's El Señor Ye Ama Los Dragones, Jeffrey K. Coleman Jan 2018

Privileging The Oriental In Paco Bezerra's El Señor Ye Ama Los Dragones, Jeffrey K. Coleman

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

Paco Bezerra's 2015 thriller-comedy El señor Ye ama los dragones destabilized the immigration narrative that often appears in Spanish theatre by creating a story in which Chinese immigrants are the focus, thus giving visibility and agency to a community that is little discussed in Spanish cultural production. Throughout his play, Bezerra inverts the common approach to immigration drama in which the Western is privileged in structure and in plot. Rather, in this play, the Oriental is privileged on a structural and narrative level, and the play concludes with the triumph of Xiaomei over her white Spanish counterparts. I propose that …

Cuba Y Cataluña En La España De Franco: Las Crónicas De Viaje De Josep Pla Para Destino, Pilar Bellver Jan 2018

Cuba Y Cataluña En La España De Franco: Las Crónicas De Viaje De Josep Pla Para Destino, Pilar Bellver
