Transforming Image Of Christ In Russian Art, Mariya Manzhos, Dr. Raisa Solovieva Sep 2013

Transforming Image Of Christ In Russian Art, Mariya Manzhos, Dr. Raisa Solovieva

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When Russia converted to Christianity in A.D. 988, it accepted the religious traditions of Byzantine culture. Through one of these religious traditions, the developing art form of icons, the image of Christ entered the social and cultural lifestyles of the ancient Russians. In the icons Christ appears as a somber, mystical and primitively painted figure. His image acquired historical, philosophical, and ethical significance in a series of 19th century paintings by A.A. Ivanov, I.N. Kramskoy, V.D. Polenov, N.N. Ge, and others. Notably, as I researched the transformation of Christ’s image in Russian art, one tendency was apparent: Christ is never …

A Comparison Of Lexical Borrowings Into Finnish From Swedish And Russian, Esko Timi Petteri Felin, Laura Catharine Smith Sep 2013

A Comparison Of Lexical Borrowings Into Finnish From Swedish And Russian, Esko Timi Petteri Felin, Laura Catharine Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The research for this project was initially conducted under the assumption that Finnish lexical borrowings from Swedish would considerably differ from its Russian counterparts. However, as more data was collected from various semantic fields, it became evident that the borrowings presented general borrowing patterns across the board not only in Swedish and Russian but also in other Germanic and Slavic languages. In the course of data pooling and analysis the conclusion for this research paper was the following: there are only a few if no differences in the manner, in which Finnish borrows words since the predominant patterns suggest that …

The Effects Of Cultural Views And Culture Shock On Success In Study Abroad Programs, Nichole Trone, Dr. Jennifer Bown Sep 2013

The Effects Of Cultural Views And Culture Shock On Success In Study Abroad Programs, Nichole Trone, Dr. Jennifer Bown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Upon getting to St. Petersburg, Russia, I realized that this project was not something I would just be conducting and observing; I would be participating it in as fully as any other student would. I somehow thought that I would be exempt from experiencing the effects of culture shock as I had already spent a considerable time in Eastern Europe. Well, I am glad to say that I learned just as much from my own experiences and perceptions as I did from observing others, probably even more, to be honest. Each person’s experience is varied according to many unique factors …

Throughout my time in Russia I chronicled both the positive and the negative experiences. I used my journal entries to record new teaching ideas, express frustrations and ambiguities found in Russia, as well as detail the priceless …

Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown Jun 2013

Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In matters of international politics today, Russia is the wildcard. Its history of power on the international stage, along with an impressive military and large sphere of influence give it a commanding presence, even as it still struggles to find its identity after a swift political and economic change following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is increasingly important to pay attention to Russia, and therefore it is equally important to know the standing the US has in that country. There is no doubt that the US has had a major impact on Russia in the last twenty years. …

Russian Pronunciation Difficulties For Native Speakers Of English: Errors And Meaning Alterations, Vitalijs Sadovskis, Dr. Grant Lundberg Jun 2013

Russian Pronunciation Difficulties For Native Speakers Of English: Errors And Meaning Alterations, Vitalijs Sadovskis, Dr. Grant Lundberg

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The major goal of this research was to determine through both theoretical analysis and practical application which Russian pronunciation difficulties for native English speakers result in a misunderstanding of meaning rather than foreign accent. Therefore, it focused on Russian pronunciation errors which can significantly hinder communication and understanding of speech by those who listen. This research took into account the differences between English and Russian sound inventory, thus indicating not only possible stumbling blocks for any speakers of Russian as a non-native language, but also denoting specific difficulties for those who speak English as their first language. The major stumbling …

The Effects Of Totalitarian Regimes And The Individual On Russian And Soviet Music, Tyler Christian Mills May 2013

The Effects Of Totalitarian Regimes And The Individual On Russian And Soviet Music, Tyler Christian Mills

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This paper addresses the development of Russian and Soviet music from the 1860’s through Stalin’s terror in the late 1930’s. It focuses on the constraints placed on the composers by the totalitarian regime and how these individual composers were able to not only survive, but leave a greater impact on the development and style of music than the state that was constraining them. The paper focuses on how individual composers were able to use their innovation and talent to create unique material that captivated audiences both at home and abroad.

Semiotics And Christian Discipleship In Fyodor Dostoevsky’S Crime And Punishment And Dietrich Bonhoeffer’S The Cost Of Discipleship, Jacob Pride Apr 2013

Semiotics And Christian Discipleship In Fyodor Dostoevsky’S Crime And Punishment And Dietrich Bonhoeffer’S The Cost Of Discipleship, Jacob Pride

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The literary and philosophical theory of semiotics considers signs and symbols. Pragmatics is the branch of semiotics that explicates the practical effects of a given interpretation according to its context. Through analyzing the pragmatic context of Crime and Punishment, one can begin to uncover the depth of meaning that the novel delivers. In The Limits of Interpretation, Umberto Eco talks about what he calls "intersubjective meaning," which helps a particular interpretation of a text attain "a privilege over any other possible interpretation spelled out without the agreement of the community" (40). The particular intersubjective meaning that needs to …

The Paradox Of Amnesia: Tondelli's Un Weekend Postmoderno, Stefano Giannini Jan 2013

The Paradox Of Amnesia: Tondelli's Un Weekend Postmoderno, Stefano Giannini

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

Tondelli opens his Un weekend postmoderno. Cronache dagli anni Ottanta declaring an intention opposite to the display of amnesia. In the long table of contents of his book, he writes down everything, in an excruciating streaming of details, so that the table of content becomes an exhaustive index of names and ideas. Yet, hidden within the hundreds of analytical snapshots, one of its many characters mentions the importance of dissimulation. Dissimulation, according to Tondelli, hides what is known, to protect the dissimulator and to mask the truth. Also, amnesia is a voluntary practice that can be enacted in order to …

An Imperial Collection: Exploring The Hammers' Icons, Wendy Salmond

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Changing hands one last time, in the 1950s, for many years the icons at BJU lived as it were incognito, the details of their glamorous origins largely forgotten. Reuniting this core group-the cream of the Hammers' imperial icons--with others that passed into American museums in the 1930s allows us to appreciate the full significance of Armand and Victor Hammer's foray into marketing icons Americans.Viewed in isolation, most of their "imperial icons" are perhaps no mo than a poignant reminder of the vast destruction and dislocation of Orthodox culture during the Soviet Cultural Revolution. Taken together, however, they paint a vivid …

Russian Language Journal

A rich vein of articles and books has recently addressed some critical issues in the field of sociolinguistics in Kazakhstan, both in terms of theoretical perspectives and of their implications in the context of education and policy. A wide range of theoretical and practical questions of Kazakhstani sociolinguistics are addressed, including:

• Defining de jure and de facto status of languages;

• Content and stages of status and corpus language planning;

• Ethnic and linguistic identification of individuals, ethnic groups and the population altogether;

• Ethnic and linguistic consciousness and self-consciousness;

• Possibility and prevention of language conflicts;

• Defining …

Translating Chris Ware's Lint Into Russian, Matthew Davis Jan 2013

Translating Chris Ware's Lint Into Russian, Matthew Davis

Honors Papers

Comics translation is rarely practiced with any appreciation of the comics medium – rather, comics usually are translated as prose, ignoring the words relationship to pictures. I chose Chris Ware's work, known for pushing the boundaries of comics language, because translating it mandates formal engagement with the comics medium. My project also involved dealing with the problems of translating into a non-native tongue, cultural translation, and placing Ware's comics in the Russian existentialist tradition.

The Transcendent As Theatre In Roerich's Paintings, Joseph C. Troncale Jan 2013

The Transcendent As Theatre In Roerich's Paintings, Joseph C. Troncale

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

It would not be an exaggeration to say that much of Russian artistic culture in the first two decades of the 20th century was theatricalised. The work that Russian painters did in the theatre was intimately integrated and synthesised with all of the other elements of a production. Many artists of the World of Art Movement were instrumental in revolutionising the theatrical arts in Russia at the invitation and under the direction of Sergei Diaghilev. Following the pioneering steps of Konstantin Korovin, many artists, including Nicholas Roerich, Alexander Benois, Leon Bakst, Mstislav Dobuzhinski and later the avant-garde painters Natalia Goncharova, …

Keeping It Real: Intensive Instruction And The Future Of Russian Language And Culture In U.S. Universities, Thomas J. Garza Jan 2013

Keeping It Real: Intensive Instruction And The Future Of Russian Language And Culture In U.S. Universities, Thomas J. Garza

Russian Language Journal

Since the global economic downturn in 2008, few programs in languages other than English in the U.S. have managed to escape the chilling effect of shrinking budgets on academic institutions. With fewer financial resources available to support the educational missions of language departments, many programs nationally have either devolved into smaller, leaner academic units at best, or at worst, have been cancelled entirely. These dire economic times, coupled with a new incarnation of culture wars aimed at the very heart of the relevance and value of a liberal arts education, have compelled some university administrators and program directors to seek …

Thinking Through Teacher Talk: Increasing Target Language Use In The Beginning Russian Classroom, William J. Comer Jan 2013

Thinking Through Teacher Talk: Increasing Target Language Use In The Beginning Russian Classroom, William J. Comer

Russian Language Journal

In July 2012, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) adopted a position statement calling for instructors and learners to use the target language (TL) for 90% plus of instructional time. ACTFL’s recommendation applies to all levels of instruction (K-16) and makes no distinctions for the degree of difference of the TL from the learners’ first language (L1). Implementing this recommendation means that no more than five minutes of a 50-minute class hour should take place in the L1 of the learners, whether that class is the first day of high school Russian or a college class …
