From the Preface:

This Navajo-English dictionary is presented with the hope that the vocabulary may be of aid to Navajos who are learning English as well as to non-Navajos who are interested in acquiring some knowledge of the Navajo language. The authors have listed Navajo vocabulary and have attempted to provide definitions in simple, easily understood English.

Grateful acknowledgement is made to all the people who contributed their knowledge and time to the development of this dictionary.

Guides to Manuscript Collections

The Floyd J. Smith diaries were written between 1887 and 1893, when Floyd Smith was a young man of 16 to 21 years of age. The entries are concerned primarily with his great interest in reading, music, painting, photography, and hunting. Included in the collection are two medical notebooks from the University of Maryland, where Mr. Smith was a student. Of particular interest in the diaries are the passages describing holiday activities in Grafton, West Virginia, and others. The last diary describes his first year at the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore.

This Master Thesis aims to discuss the language mix-up in the Philippines. Originally, the people speak different dialects because of the lack of interaction due to geographical isolation. The Spaniards brought Spanish to them, which became the official language of the government until the Americans came and made English the medium of instruction in the school.

The trouble lies in the fact that English-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want English only, Spanish-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Spanish only, Tagalog-speaking-and-loving Filipinos want Tagalog only while non-Tagalog-speaking Filipinos are either indifferent or prefer their respective dialects. HE practice has established itself among literary historians and anthologists of associating the English and Scottish ballads primarily with the fifteenth century, sometimes with the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. One of the best and most popular of the histories of English literature now used in schools and colleges states in its revised editions: "These ballads appear to have flourished luxuriantly among the folk in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, after which their composition ceased.
