"Like Liberty And Union": Stanton And Anthony As Friends, Ann D. Gordon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

While deciding upon an appropriate topic for this address, I realized that like athletes who head to Disneyland, I, after this big game, wanted most of all to take the next train back to the nineteenth century. So, to celebrate the end of my presidential term, I will start that return journey, speaking about the friendship between Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, or more precisely, about the intersection of this friendship with documentary scholarship.

Shifting Proslavery Ideology: Review Of Balancing Evils Judiciously: The Proslavery Writings Of Zephaniah Kingsley, Ed. Daniel W. Stowell., Trenton Hizer Dec 2000

Shifting Proslavery Ideology: Review Of Balancing Evils Judiciously: The Proslavery Writings Of Zephaniah Kingsley, Ed. Daniel W. Stowell., Trenton Hizer

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Balancing Evils Judiciously is a volume in which quality more than makes up for a lack of quantity, In this slender work, Daniel W Stowell, director and editor of the Lincoln Legal Papers, presents the unique proslavery writings of Zephaniah Kingsley, Jr., of Florida: eight letters, articles and documents by Kingsley, and one published letter by L. Maria Childs, the noted New York abolitionist with whom he was acquainted. Kingsley's few works on slavery would easily be lost in the volumes of antebellum proslavery writings, if not for the singular position he took on the peculiar institution. His personal experiences, …

Deep Pockets And Determination: Review Of Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon Fbi Files. By Jon Wiener., Stephen R. Mackinnon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The narrative in Gimme Some Truth runs a slim and trim 104 pages. The story is familiar and well told: the FBI and CIA were put to political use in 1972 by President Richard Nixon (at the suggestion of Senator Strom Thurmond) to safeguard Nixon's reelection. Not startling news. The new twist is the case study involving the greatest pop culture celebrity icon of the 1960s and early 1970s-John Lennon of Beatles fame. For a while, engineering Lennon's deportation before the Republican National Convention seemed to be the Haldeman-Nixon-Hoover goal. The more interesting and original sub-theme is the way Wiener …

Collaborative Learning: Principles, Practice And Potential In The English Language Classroom, William Littlewood Dec 2000

Collaborative Learning: Principles, Practice And Potential In The English Language Classroom, William Littlewood

PASAA

Students across a wide range of countries (including Thailand) express their liking for classroom learning activities in which they work purposefully in groups in order to achieve common goals. This mode of learning also lies at the heart of the philosophy and techniques of "collaborative learning." This paper presents briefly the principles which underlie collaborative learning. It describes a range of strategies and techniques which teachers can use in order to organize collaborative learning. Finally, it discusses how collaborative learning tasks fit into an overall framework for language learning and how they relate to the development of learner autonomy.

I'M Sorry: A Cross-Cultural Exploration Of Apologizing, Michael Ziesing Dec 2000

I'M Sorry: A Cross-Cultural Exploration Of Apologizing, Michael Ziesing

PASAA

Probably no language function has been in the news more lately than the function of apologizing. Week after week, the famous as well as the infamous stand before the public and apologize or, in any case, receive demands for apologies. Hardly a week goes by without some apology or other making the news - often times even the front pages.

I'M Sorry, I Can't Remember, John F. Fanselow Dec 2000

I'M Sorry, I Can't Remember, John F. Fanselow

PASAA

Each time a person in a language class responds to a question with "I'm sorry, I forgot," the person is implying that language learning consists mainly of memorizing. The long lists of vocabulary items learners try to commit to memory also imply that memorizing is the key mental activity required in language learning. Questions in textbooks and on tests that ask for facts also send the message that learning and memorizing are equivalent. In fact, though we need to memorize some things, much of all of learning, including language learning, requires thinking: processing sounds we hear and symbols we see. …

Changing English, Linguistic Identity And Elt, John E. Joseph Dec 2000

Changing English, Linguistic Identity And Elt, John E. Joseph

PASAA

A crucial part of knowing a language is knowing how to interpret variation- what it means if someone uses one form rather than another to say the same thing. This paper examines four ongoing changes in spoken English, and what it means to be a user of the old form or the new one. We interpret the identity of the people with whom we speak based upon these minor differences, and we often assess the truth or validity of what they are saying based on our assessment. In this sense, the linguistic identity of speakers cannot be separated from the …

Evaluation Of English Listening Proficiency Of Salc Users At Kmutt, Thailand, Charatdao Intratat Dec 2000

Evaluation Of English Listening Proficiency Of Salc Users At Kmutt, Thailand, Charatdao Intratat

PASAA

It is widely accepted that a self-access center provides opportunities for the students to develop their English proficiency skills out of class. Even though a self-access center requires a large sum of budget and resources, its practical usefulness for language learners and its effect on the users' proficiency development have not been fully investigated. This preliminary study which was funded by KMUTT was a tentative attempt (1) to evaluate English listening proficiency of the KMUTT's Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) users, and (2) to investigate on the significance of the SALC's role in autonomous learning, particularly in developing English listening proficiency. …

A Reflection On Team-Teaching In An Efl Classroom, Punchalee Wasanasomsithi Dec 2000

A Reflection On Team-Teaching In An Efl Classroom, Punchalee Wasanasomsithi

PASAA

Team-teaching is a versatile instructional approach that has been implemented in a variety of English language teaching and learning settings for different pedagogical and administrative purposes. Existing research claims that by extending the teaching competencies of teachers through group interaction and process sharing, the quality of instruction provided to the students can be improved. It is believed that this would, in turn, lead to promotion of not only the teaching but also the learning process. This paper reports on an experimental study in which the team-teaching technique was employed to teach a graduate English course at Chulalongkorn University. The students' …

Can The Communicative Approach Be Appropriate To Language Teaching?, Annabel Bhamani Kajornboon Dec 2000

Can The Communicative Approach Be Appropriate To Language Teaching?, Annabel Bhamani Kajornboon

PASAA

This paper is a reflective piece. Most ELT teachers are very devoted to their students, but most of the time they find themselves weary from teaching. Most teachers want to help and to improve their students' English; however, they are not sure how to do it. Hence, this paper explores some of the possibilities through the communicative approach. It makes an attempt to explain what this approach is and how it can be applied to the classroom; it looks both at its advantages and disadvantages.

Using Cooperative Concept Mapping Skill To Teach Esl Reading, Hua Tang Dec 2000

Using Cooperative Concept Mapping Skill To Teach Esl Reading, Hua Tang

PASAA

Reading is now recognized as an important source of input for second language acquisition (Dupuy, Tse & Cook 1996; Krashen, 1993). Traditionally, reading has been taught as information retrieval. Primarily, it is the decoding of individual words that requires ESL students to approach a text using a dictionary (Mangelsdorf 1998). Now, in the new century, how should we teach ESL reading? How should we improve ESL students' academic proficiency in English? Students of this generation, different from students of the past, are more drawn with visual images, TV, music videos etc, so we need techniques that encourage reading. Concept mapping, …

Annotating Mr. Fitzgerald, James L.W. West Iii

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Anyone who has written historical notes for a scholarly edition has learned to spot "glossable" references in contemporary texts. Philip Roth's Zuckerman Unbound, for example, will s0meday need annotations about the quiz-show scandals of the 1950s and about Charles Van Doren and Herbert Stempel, contestants whose lives were ruined by the disclosures. Don DeLillo's Underworld will require a description of Truman Capote's Black and White Ball, along with some information about]. Edgar Hoover's cross-dressing and his liaison with Clyde Tolson. Lee Smith's novels will need identifications of Post Toasties and of Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs (whose big hit song …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The four-volume Retirement Series of The Papers o/George Washington includes the ex-president's correspondence from March 4, 1797, the day following John Adams's inauguration as the nation's second president, until December 10,1799, four days before Washington's death. The fifth and final subset of The Papers and the third to be completed, it provides us with an immeasurably richer portfolio on the final years of Washington's life than is available from John C. Fitzpatrick's previously published The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources, 1745-1799 (Washington, 1931-1944), While Fitzpatrick published a substantial number of the letters -written by Washington during …

Anglo-I Atin's Scholarlyeolleagues: Editing The Oxford Medieval Texts: Review Of The Book Of The Foundation Of Walden Monastery. Diana Greenway And Leslie Watkiss, Ed. And Trans., Elaine E. Whitaker

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The Book of the Foundation of Walden Monastery contains at least two stories. The overt story is of marginalized medieval monks trying to secure their assets. This story--told in Latin with a translation on facing pages, normalized spelling, and twentieth-century punctuation-makes a lively read for anyone interested in human behavior. It concerns a twe1fthcentuty nobleman who founds an abbey using some of his least promising land, subsequently gets himself excommunicated and then killed in a pique over injustices done to him, and is succeeded by an array of kin, including a presumed bastard (Geoffrey fitz Peter), who allegedly subtract rather …

Annotation Control And Computers: A Case Study Of The Salmon P. Chase Papers Project, Leigh Johnsen Jun 2000

Annotation Control And Computers: A Case Study Of The Salmon P. Chase Papers Project, Leigh Johnsen

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Computers have become permanent features on editing projects. Gone is much of their novelty, as well as major debates over their value and appropriateness. Instead, current evidence suggests widespread acceptance of digital technology for a variety of major functions, from transcription and typesetting to document control and indexing. Thanks to the World Wide Web, computers also apparently hold promise of changing the very nature of documentary editing, perhaps in ways that can only be imagined at present.

Despite these developments, however, editors have tended to overlook the potential of computers to control annotation research. Indeed, current evidence suggests that they …
