Ade To Meet In Williamsburg, Virginia: The Association For Documentary Editing, Annual Meeting Program, 15-17 October 1992, Colonial Williamsburg Woodlands, Williamsburg, Virginia

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The 1992 meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing will be held in Williamsburg, Virginia, from Thursday 15 October through Saturday 17 October. From 1689 to 1780 Williamsburg was the capital of Virginia, Great Britain's largest colony in the New World. Thanks to the imaginative vision of the Reverend W. A. R. Goodwin and the creative philanthropy of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., this former "seat of empire" has been restored to its eighteenth-century appearance.

The Theory Of Editing: Review Of Devils And Angels: Textual Editing And Literary Theory. Edited By Philip Cohen., Charles L. Ross Sep 1992

The Theory Of Editing: Review Of Devils And Angels: Textual Editing And Literary Theory. Edited By Philip Cohen., Charles L. Ross

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

In what ways does literary theory, as filtered through textual criticism, enter into editorial practice? That is the central question addressed in this stimulating collection of essays by editors, textual critics, and literary theorists. The critical discourse is diverse. Several contributors, sounding like philosophers or semioticians, mull over the "ontology" of the work; others explore the rhetorics of different sorts of edition. Some promote sociological, new historical, or German hermeneutical approaches to "text-construction," while others refine the more traditional conception of the eclectic text based on an author's final intentions. Almost all share Hans Walter Gabler's belief that there is …

Penance Or Pedophilia: Mark Twain And The Aquarium: Review Of Mark Twain's Aquarium: The Samuel Clemens Angelfish Correspondence, 1905-1910. Edited By John Cooley., J. Kent Calder

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

This world comes to life in this useful new volume edited by John Cooley, a professor of English at Western Michigan University. Cooley learned of the Aquarium Club through letters in the possession of his second cousin, Marjorie Breckenridge, an M.A., and his ensuing fascination led him to the Mark Twain Papers at the University of California, Berkeley, and to other significant Twain collections around the country in such repositories as New York Public Library, Columbia University Library, Huntington Library, and Yale University Library. The resulting compilation of approximately three hundred entries represents "nearly every known written communication between Samuel …

A Message From The President, David R. Chesnutt

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Response to the call for support and the dues notices which Harriet Simon sent out at the first of the year has been great! More than forty members renewed at increased levels and many of you made additional contributions. John Kaminski reports having sent out more than 100 copies of Beth Luey's Editing Documents and Texts while Dennis Conrad notes that contributions totaled more than $2,000. The membership list stands at 475, though a number of second notices had to be sent out this summer. In short, we weathered another financial crisis.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

One hundred and seventy-two pages into this exemplar of many of the best aspects of contemporary historical documentary editing, Philander D. Chase prints George Washington's 29 April 1776 letter to his brother John Augustine Washington. His last letter to his brother had been penned on 31 March, the last date included in the previous volume, and thus this renewal of the correspondence afforded the opportunity to summarize the activities of the first month encompassed in this book's covers. At the beginning of the month, General Washington had been preparing to leave Cambridge for New York after a successful siege had …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Few would imagine James Madison as the dreamy, tongue-tied romantic type, yet this description of the Father of the Constitution during his courtship of Dolley Payne Todd is but one of many wonderfully revealing documents that appear in the Congressional series of The Papers of James Madison. The completion of Series I of this edition provides an opportunity to review how well the six volumes document Madison and the history of the early republic under the Constitution.

John Dewey: The Editor's Appreciation, Jo Ann Boydston Jun 1992

John Dewey: The Editor's Appreciation, Jo Ann Boydston

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

When John Dewey was born in 1859, there were in this country some men, and a few women, who were philosophers, teachers of philosophy, and students of philosophy, but these people could not teach or study American philosophy because there was no body of thought that could be called "American philosophy." Half a century later, we did have an identifiable "American" philosophy and much that is distinctive about it we owe to John Dewey. In fact, by 1920, when Dewey was sixty-one years old, Morris Raphael Cohen was able to say, "John Dewey is unquestionably the one preeminent figure in …

Making The Illegible Intelligible: Review Of The Letter Book Of James Abercromby, Colonial Agent: I75i-I773. Edited By John C. Van Horne And George Reese., C. James Taylor

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The letter book along with his other papers and books remained in the possession of the Abercromby family for almost a century after his death. In the early 1870S London booksellers purchased the collection and from there items were sold and dispersed. A note in the letter book dates its presentation by the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution to the State Library and Archives as 22 February 1919, Jon Kukla's foreword to the edition notes that while the manuscript has been available to scholars for seventy years, its usefulness has been limited because "its scrawled text [is] virtually indecipherable" …

What John Dewey Taught Me, Harriet Furst Simon Jun 1992

What John Dewey Taught Me, Harriet Furst Simon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

John Dewey, because of his longevity and productivity, has spawned a cottage industry. Seldom has one man kept so many women respectably employed for so long (we are not prejudiced; we have had a male co-worker now and again). Of course, his editors are not the only ones who have been busy; an increasing number of scholars are churning out books and articles on topics ranging from Dewey and the May Fourth Movement in China to the important women in Dewey's life.

As I thought about the subject of appreciation, it seemed to me that Dewey has educated us in …

St. Columba, Cassiodorus, And Julian Boyd: Some Lessons To Learn About Metaphor, Frank G. Burke

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Somewhere, in my picaresque wanderings through the culture palaces of Washington, where I occasionally was assigned the role of Praetorian Guard over the nation's historical treasures, I acquired a copy of a curious speech delivered by Julian Boyd to the meeting of the Society of American Archivists in Annapolis on 13 October 1939.

A Future For Documentary Editions: The Historical Documents Study, Ann D. Gordon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

No one doubted the wisdom of gathering information about current use of historical sources when the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the American Council of Learned Societies launched the Historical Documents Study two years ago. The Commission would learn more about the context for its own decisions to support projects that publish and preserve historical documents. True to its mission to lead and educate in matters of the nation's documentary heritage, the Commission would also inform other agencies and individuals responsible for similar decisions affecting historical sources and research.

But a counterclaim disturbed the unanimity. Within and around …

In Search Of The Private George Washington : Review Of David Humphreys' "Life Of General Washington" With George Washington's "Remarks." Edited By Rosemarie Zagarri., Philander D. Chase

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Did anybody ever see Washington naked?" Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote in 1858. "It is inconceivable. He had no nakedness, but, I imagine, was born with his clothes on and his hair powdered, and made a stately bow on his first appearance in the world." Generations of Americans have viewed "the father of their country" in much the same light. So monumental is the figure of George Washington on the stage of American history, so stoic are the virtues commonly attributed to him, and so stiff and dignified is his persona in death as in life that one can scarcely conceive of …

Frank Norris, Decadent Humorist: The 1897 Version Of "The Joyous Miracle", Joseph R. Mcelrath Jr., Gwendolyn Jones

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The once-popular "Joyous Miracle" is now a distinctly minor short story in the canon of Frank Norris. First given separate publication in England and the United States as a Christmas giftbook in 1906, it was then being recycled for its earning potential as a seasonal offering; for it had already appeared as an 1898 Christmas piece in McClure's Magazine under the title "Miracle Joyeux." Norris's contemporaries held it in high regard: for example, the New Orleans Times-Democrat found the McClure's version a "charming sketch" and praised its author for succeeding with a difficult-to-handle theme-difficult because its featured character was the …

Joel Myerson and I have been working together for more than a decade now-drawn together by our common interests in scholarly editing and publishing. We have put together panels and sessions at various professional meetings, worked together on workshops, put together grant proposals, and helped each other in a variety of less formal ways. Our regular luncheons give us a chance to keep up with what's going on in our respective fields, as well as the local scene at our university. They also provide a sounding board for ideas.

Kidwatching Going Beyond The Language Of The Test, Abha Gupta Jan 1992

Kidwatching Going Beyond The Language Of The Test, Abha Gupta

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

A study examined the linguistic forms in the discourse of speakers during a language test to indicate why they use certain specific forms over others. Ten children were given the Grammatical Analysis of Elicited Language--Simple Sentence Level Test (GAEL), a language proficiency test for hearing-impaired children in the age group of 4 to 8 years. Three students were videotaped during administration of the test, and the other students' final responses (omitting the intermediate discourse) were recorded. Some of the test items on which the maximum number of children deviated from the target response were analyzed for common traits and classified …
