Pragmatism And Democratic Embodiment : The Poetics Of Constructive Conflict In Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, Mina Loy, And Laura (Riding) Jackson, Aidan Patricia Thompson Jan 2013

Pragmatism And Democratic Embodiment : The Poetics Of Constructive Conflict In Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, Mina Loy, And Laura (Riding) Jackson, Aidan Patricia Thompson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

My dissertation, "Pragmatism and Democratic Embodiment: The Poetics of Constructive Conflict in Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, Mina Loy, and Laura (Riding) Jackson," establishes a methodology based on William James's notion of the subject (1890) as fluid to interrogate how these poets, working roughly between 1860 and 1970, complicated questions of writing in order to critique systems of gender. I reconsider a presumed relation between language and feminism in Modernist Studies that understands the aesthetic practice of unsettling linguistic norms to be counter to feminist concerns relating to the body. Through this reassessment, I argue that the poets anticipated problems associated …

Use Of Subordination In English Second Language Texts, Susan L. Nesbitt Perez

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study investigates features of high-level academic writing in English with the aim of understanding the development of L2 English learners' academic writing skills as they follow a course of study in an English-speaking country. The study focuses on L2 writers' text quality and use of clause subordinators as a measure of writing complexity. The typology of the writers' L1s provides the organizational framework for the study, with three language typology groupings determined by a writer's L1 word order tendency: (1) configurational languages, (2) nonconfigurational languages, and (3) Asian languages.

The Phenomenological Experience Of Narrative Transportation, William Buchanan Jan 2013

The Phenomenological Experience Of Narrative Transportation, William Buchanan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has attempted to identify consequences of mental transportation into narrative worlds. While scales have been developed and validated to measure readers' levels of transportation, the objective quantification has left researchers at a descriptive disadvantage for the full range of qualitative responses to this phenomenon. This study presents a qualitative method of inquiry designed to get at the experience of narrative transportation as it is lived: the phenomenological interview. Interview transcripts were inductively analyzed for common themes that indicate intersubjective features of narrative experience. Four main themes were identified, which were composed of 22 base-level experiences reported by participants. …

‘An Isle Full Of Noises’: The Perception & Influence Of Sound In Shakespeare’S The Tempest, Paul A. Di Salvo Jan 2013

‘An Isle Full Of Noises’: The Perception & Influence Of Sound In Shakespeare’S The Tempest, Paul A. Di Salvo

Student Publications

Since the play’s authorship in 1610, actor-managers and directors alike have struggled over staging the opening scene of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The physical presence of the ship, the sounds and lighting effects of thunder and lightning, the dialogue of the actors, and the use of music have varied from the early 17th century to the present in an effort to appeal to the audience. The presentation of these elements, especially sound cues and music, prepares audiences to understand the dynamics of Prospero’s powers and transformation as a character. Depending on how sound and stage technologies were implemented …

Opportunity For Engagement : How Viewing "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries" Transcends Traditional Reader Response, Molly Hayes Jan 2013

Opportunity For Engagement : How Viewing "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries" Transcends Traditional Reader Response, Molly Hayes

Honors Program Theses

For hundreds of years, publishers have worked to understand the relationship between a reader and a text. This relationship between a reader and a text has changed dramatically as technology develops, allowing readers to interact with a text in new ways. As years pass, the technology available to content creators as well as consumers changes drastically, often resulting in adaptation of text. One text that has been adapted many times is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The novel has been recorded on tape, made into a television series, adapted for the big screen, and now has been brought to an …

Using Journal Writing With Peer Feedback To Enhance Efl Students' Writing Ability Across Proficiency Levels, Watcharee Kulprasit, Thanyapa Chiramanee

PASAA

This quasi-experimental research integrated journal writing with peer feedback in an EFL writing classroom to examine its impact on writing ability of 42 Mathayomsuksa 3 Semi-English-program students in terms of accuracy and fluency across proficiency levels. The findings revealed that all students' overall writing ability improved significantly. The middle and the low groups' writing ability improved significantly in terms of accuracy and the word count in their writing significantly increased while the high group's did not. However, no significant improvement was found in all students' production of consistent language structures and vocabulary use: an aspect of fluency. The data analysis …

The Use Of Win, Self-Creative Interaction Ppt, And Online Tests To Assist In The Instruction Of English For Taiwanese Freshmen, Hui-Kuei Hsieh, Hui-Uen Chia, Erickson Lin

PASAA

Nowadays, because of the expansion of high-speed networking, people highly depend upon computers and the Internet to receive information and acquire knowledge. Education is gradually transforming from teacher-centric to student-centric. Instructors have become facilitators, tutors, coaches, guides and motivators. As a result, instruction has become non-linear and self-directed. Traditional classroom lectures are being gradually replaced by interactive teaching approaches. To reflect this trend, new forms of instruction must also take learners' needs into consideration. Consequently, interactive multimedia (IM) integrated instruction has become a must in Taiwanese higher education. Today, IM and courseware are required educational media in almost every Taiwanese …

Degree Of Comprehensibility In Thai Accented English Rated By Native Speaker Judges, Rachada Pongprairat, Sudaporn Luksaneeyanawin

PASAA

This study focuses on Thai accented English in one suprasegmental aspect—tonality (tone group chunking and rhythmic group division). Prior studies mostly compared the productions of learners at different proficiency levels with reference to native speakers as a norm. This study goes further by investigating the degree of difficulty in understanding Thai accented read speech by two groups of native speaker judges with different amounts of contact with Thai learners. The English read speech of two groups of Thai EFL learners representing slightly accented speakers (n = 5) and heavily accented speakers (n = 5) were randomised and presented to the …

An Analysis Of Moves In Introductions In International And Thai Journal Research Articles, Wirada Amnuai, Anchalee Wannaruk

PASAA

The schematic organization of research articles in terms of moves and steps has attracted extensive attention in genre study, and the focus of move-based analysis is on the hierarchical schematic structures of texts. The primary aim of this study is to compare the rhetorical moves in English research article introductions in Applied Linguistics as published in local Thai journals with those published in international journals. The comparison was made between 20 local and 20 international research article introductions selected from seven refereed local Thai journals and from seven international journals. These research article introductions were analyzed based on Swales' (2004) …

Encouraging Thai Efl Students' Recursive Progression Through The Writing Process With Blogs, Onuma Lakarnchua, Punchalee Wasanasomsithi Jan 2013

Encouraging Thai Efl Students' Recursive Progression Through The Writing Process With Blogs, Onuma Lakarnchua, Punchalee Wasanasomsithi

PASAA

Blogging, which allows users to post texts to an online site and have others comment on them, is posited to benefit writing as a process. Whether or not blogging encourages recursive progression through the writing process, which is deemed essential to fostering writing ability, and the factors that help it to do so, still need further investigation, particularly when it is implemented in a Thai context. This study sought to determine if Thai EFL students who used blogs to complete writing assignments moved recursively through the writing process, and if so, what features of blogging seemed to promote this action. …

Ten Mistakes To Avoid When Writing A Literature Review, Woravut Jaroongkhongdach Jan 2013

Ten Mistakes To Avoid When Writing A Literature Review, Woravut Jaroongkhongdach

PASAA

Writing a quality literature review is important for success in publication and graduate studies, but it is a difficult task for many novice researchers and graduate students to achieve as noted by several scholars. For instance, Boote and Beile (2005) assert that ―most literature reviews [in dissertations] are poorly conceptualized and written‖ (p. 4), and Onwuegbuzie and Daniel (2005) report that many literature reviews of manuscripts for publications are underdeveloped and have problems with unsupported claims. These problems seem to be common in various disciplines such as education and social studies (see e.g., Fraenkel & Wallen, 2008; Zorn & Campbell, …

Artaud's Journey To Mexico And His Portrayals Of The Land, Tsu-Chung Su Dec 2012

Artaud's Journey To Mexico And His Portrayals Of The Land, Tsu-Chung Su

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Artaud's Journey to Mexico and His Portrayals of the Land" Tsu-Chung Su examines Artaud's visions, visualizations, descriptions, and conceptualizations of Mexico. Su argues that Artaud's writings about Mexico were his textual appropriations and cartographical remappings of the land. They embodied both the geographic wandering of his itinerary and the bodily spasms of his thought. At once geographical and psycho-physiological embodiments, they were not only texts of a questing spirit but also words of a schizophrenic mind. While tracing and mapping Artaud's deterritorialized wanderings in cultures, religions, and rituals of Mexico, Su aims to explore the interlinking relationships …

Negra D'America Remond And Her Journeys, Sirpa A. Salenius

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "negra d'America Remond and Her Journeys" Sirpa A. Salenius analyzes Sarah P. Remond's travels to Europe. Remond, an African American born free in Salem, Massachusetts in 1826 into an abolitionist family, was a successful lecturer on abolitionism in the United States before traveling to England in 1859. During her anti-slavery lecture tour there, she also became involved in promoting women's rights thus enlarging the scope of her social and political agenda to embrace both racial and gender oppression. Subsequently, she studied in London, graduating as a nurse from London University College before moving to Italy where …

The Slave Trade In The Work Of Fox, Johnson, And Spielberg, Ya-Huei Lin Dec 2012

The Slave Trade In The Work Of Fox, Johnson, And Spielberg, Ya-Huei Lin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The Slave Trade in the Work of Fox, Johnson, and Spielberg" Ya-huei Lin analyzes Paula Fox's The Slave Dancer (1973), Charles R. Johnson's The Middle Passage (1990), and Amistad, the 1997 film directed by Steven Spielberg based on the true event of 1841. Lin's examination of these three texts is an attempt to clarify the event's narration in the context of Walter Benjamin's historical materialism. Further, Lin explores what Louis Althusser proposes in "A Letter on Art" as to how the texts at hand make one see the ideology from which they are located. The authors' …

Reimagining "Tense And Tender Ties" In García's Monkey Hunting, Yu-Fang Cho Dec 2012

Reimagining "Tense And Tender Ties" In García's Monkey Hunting, Yu-Fang Cho

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Reimagining 'Tense and Tender Ties' in Garcia's Monkey Hunting" Yu-Fang Cho analyses Cristina García's re-narration of transnational histories of the multi-racial, multi-generational Chinese Cuban family in Monkey Hunting (2003) as a critical project that recasts developmental immigrant narratives primarily set in the United States as part of the emerging cultural archive of global migrations. Drawing on recent scholarship on comparative racialization, especially Ann Laura Stoler's formulation of "tense and tender ties" as a method, Cho examines how García's family saga unsettles the temporal and spatial logics of Euro-American modernity through the deployment of cyclical narrative structure …

Mental Travel And Memory Mapping In Sebald's Work, Jonathan White Dec 2012

Mental Travel And Memory Mapping In Sebald's Work, Jonathan White

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Mental Travel and Memory Mapping in Sebald's Narratives" Jonathan White analyses several of the journeys — real and by means of the mind — by which W.G. Sebald follows what he once called "invisible connections that determine our lives." These connections are often although not always between the living and the dead "on the far side of time." In reaction against what Sebald interpreted as a conspiracy of silence in his youth over the destruction that Germany had caused and that which had been done in turn to it, Sebald attempted to reconstruct worlds and people destroyed …

Gulliver, Travel, And Empire, Claude Rawson Dec 2012

Gulliver, Travel, And Empire, Claude Rawson

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Gulliver, Travel, and Empire" Claude Rawson analyzes Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels as a central document of European intellectual history. Rawson focuses on the relationship between ethnicity and human identity and asks what constitutes humanity and how individual groups qualify (or not) for human status. Posing teasingly as a "parody" of travel books, it is both a series of voyages and an ethnically widening arc of moral exploration as Book Four at once expresses an ambivalent perception of the Irish under English rule and extends to what Swift/Gulliver calls "all Savage Nations" and ultimately takes in what Swift …

Evans's And Cheevers's Quaker Missionary Travels, Hui-Chu Yu Dec 2012

Evans's And Cheevers's Quaker Missionary Travels, Hui-Chu Yu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Evans's and Cheevers's Quaker Missionary Travels" Hui-chu Yu investigates Katharine Evans's and Sarah Cheevers's account of their experiences as Quaker missionaries in Malta between 1658-1662. For Evans and Cheevers traveling was a mission ordained by god and thus their journey is less a trip for the gratification of exploration than spiritual and physical trials. With a purpose to spread Quaker texts, Evans and Cheevers traveled to different lands such as Ireland and Malta. Although they perceived the hostility toward their belief, they still claimed to be god's handmaids with an aim to preach their religious belief. Their …

The Life Writing Of Hart, Inspector-General Of The Imperial Maritime Customs Service, Henk Vynckier, Chihyun Chang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "The Life Writing of Hart, Inspector-General of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service" Henk Vynckier and Chihyun Chang analyze the life and writing of Sir Robert Hart (1835-1911). Hart arrived in China in 1854 and served as Inspector-General of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service 1863-1911. Although Hart disparaged his own role, Jonathan Spence views him as a key adviser to the Qing government. Despite of the historical importance of Hart's texts, of his seventy-seven volume diary only eight of the volumes have been published and the remaining volumes remain largely unexamined. Vynckier and Chang examine the complex transmission …

Cannibalism, Ecocriticism, And Portraying The Journey, Simon C. Estok Dec 2012

Cannibalism, Ecocriticism, And Portraying The Journey, Simon C. Estok

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Cannibalism, Ecocriticism, and Portraying the Journey" Simon C. Estok discusses the ways early modern preoccupation with cannibalism is at once rooted in and reflective of an ecophobic environmental ethics. Looking both at descriptions of metaphoric and literal cannibalism, Estok shows that imagining cannibalism was central to the travel narrative and to its investments in writing the center and the periphery, the human and the nonhuman, the acceptable and the repugnant — binaries which reveal ethical positions, not only toward people, but, more broadly, toward the natural environment. Estok argues that it is relevant to discuss the discourse …
