Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932, surveys the contributions of Black artists to literature and music in America, situating these contributions within a broader history of African civilization and creative achievement. The thesis opens with a discussion of ancient African scientific, religious, and artistic accomplishments before turning to its central focus on Black American literary and musical figures from the eighteenth through early twentieth centuries.
The thesis profiles a series of poets and writers, including Phyllis Wheatley, described as the first Black woman in American literature; Paul …
The Bibliography Of The Ethnobiology Of The Southwest Indians, Vera A. Hough
The Bibliography Of The Ethnobiology Of The Southwest Indians, Vera A. Hough
Art & Art History ETDs
This investigation was made for the purpose of determining what has been accomplished in the past in the study of ethnobiology of the southwest Indians. Much of this has been produced as incidental to the archaeology of the region, and some as definite biological problems. Also isolated pieces of work have been done with the different Indian peoples and with varying phases of their ethnobiology. It is therefore proposed to organize and correlate this great mass of ethnobiological literature into a plan which (1 ) includes the entire region and (2) considers the various phases of the culture through which …

The Roman Catacombs, Conrad A.E. Saskowski
The Roman Catacombs, Conrad A.E. Saskowski
Bachelors’ Theses
One day in May 15-78, some laborers digging in the "pozzolano" on the Via Salerna two miles from the wall of Rome, went at their work so industriously as to fall into the Galleries that were banked with graves. Great as the astonishment of the age to find the existence of a city of the dead beneath the suburbs of Rome, and many were the people who flocked to see it. Since the tenth century the Catacombs had lain forsaken and forgotten but from this time on they were the most interesting curiosity in Italy.
The English Inn And Tavern In The Lives And Works Of English Poets From Chaucer To Shakespeare, Hugo C. Schwartz
The English Inn And Tavern In The Lives And Works Of English Poets From Chaucer To Shakespeare, Hugo C. Schwartz
Bachelors’ Theses
This paper is an attempt to show the part or the inn and tavern in the lives of the early English writers, and the influence it had on their work. The English inn has a romantic interest to readers of English literature, chiefly the result of rhapsodic verse about the Mermaid, the Apollo Club, and other similar places, written by the poets of the time and many others since. The effect has been to cast a romantic glow over the inn which yet glimmers over the remains of that institution to-day.

The Acculturation Of Sandia Pueblo, Marjorie Ferguson
The Acculturation Of Sandia Pueblo, Marjorie Ferguson
Art & Art History ETDs
To study the culture or a people, to become acquainted with the arts, folklore, religion, industries, and traditions, past and present, of what seems to be a slowly dying Indian pueblo -- was the writer's main purpose when she became interestd in Sandia pueblo, a town or the old, old Tiguex province, so often mentioned in southwestern history and folklore.
One might ask what there could be of interest in that shabby little settlement off the main highway from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. To the unsympathetic outsider such a study as was conducted at Sandia might seem nothing more than …
The Relation Of French Poetry And Painting To The Development Of French Impressionistic Music, Phyllis Elaine Threlfall
The Relation Of French Poetry And Painting To The Development Of French Impressionistic Music, Phyllis Elaine Threlfall
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
As far as the writer could find in her reading no one has ever written a finished study of this phase of Music, Art, and Literature. Of course, there are hints of it here and there in many books, but in no one in particular was a detailed study given. Paul Landormy’s book, A History of Music, seemed to carry the heart of the subject, however, in an extremely miniature style.
When we think of French music, our minds are generally centered in Paris, for it is here that the greatest organizations have been sponsored, and the important musical ideas …
