Through an extensive review of the literature of the history and methodology of art history and visual resources, this thesis charts the effect of the use of slides for the discipline of art history.

The three chapters examine the conjunction between slides and art history. Chapter one gives an account of the pedagogical and practical reasons for the current predominance of the slide as the reproduction of choice in art history, concluding with a discussion of the relative importance of the text and image for art history. Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archeological investigations at Lake Alan Henry, in Garza and Kent Counties, Texas, between 1987 and 1993 generated much archeological data relevant to interpreting late Holocene human activities. This review goes beyond the project boundary to synthesize the late prehistory and history of the Texas Panhandle Plains, with special emphasis on the north-south band of rugged canyons found along the Caprock Escarpment, herein defined as the Caprock Canyonlands. This synthesis looks at the human past from an ecological perspective, correlating shifts in subsistence, technology, and settlement patterns with inferred changes in paleoclimate, flora, and fauna. Past fluctuations in bison population size, …

This dissertation examines the photographs of Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi. A successful photographer and celebrated artist during much of his life, Chambi and his work was largely forgotten about since the 1950s and unknown outside of South America. During the 1970s he was rediscovered and his photographs made known to audiences around the world. As a result, new interpretations of him as an artist have emerged which are different from those during his life. The photographs he is known for today are not those he considered his artistic work.

Combining The Historical And The Personal In Painting, Christopher A. Shotola-Hardt

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis project consists of five large scale, abstract paintings executed on Masonite panels. A major component of these paintings is the heavily built-up surface texture. In order to achieve this heavy, sculptural surface, plaster and acrylic media have been applied in an aggressive, spontaneous manner using variously-sized masonry knives. The paintings are largely action-oriented. They are non-neutral, and they bespeak a great deal of intensity on the part of the artist.

The five paintings contain emotional content based upon personal experiences and family history. In some cases, I began a painting with the subject matter clearly in mind. In …

This thesis is an attempt to study in detail the career and life of one of the South's many overlooked painters, the New Orleans-based artist and teacher Paul Ninas (1903-1964). Ninas, known as "The Dean of New Orleans Artists" was intimately associated with the art scene in New Orleans and was influential in its formation and development through both his academic and aesthetic contributions.
