The Robert Burns Portraits Revisited, Patrick Scott

Illustrated lecture for the 2025 annual meeting of the Robert Burns Association of North America, in Atlanta, Georgia, on the major portraits of the Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796), and on the dissemination of the well-known Nasmyth portrait through engravings, copies, and adaptations, charting the delayed emergence of the other portraits now generally recognized, surveying recurrent efforts to get other 'discoveries' accepted as depicting Burns, and suggesting possible dramatic further news likely to come later in the year.

Through researching the provenance of a Buddhist manuscript written in the Pali and Thai languages currently held at Rollins, this article seeks to answer the question of how a religious document created in Thailand ended up in a liberal arts college library in America. Regarded as an act of devotion by many Buddhist followers in Southeast Asia, the use of folding manuscripts (samut khoi) has been observed for centuries. One of the most important, yet neglected, periods in photography's young history took place in the United States during the 1960s. For years, photographers who explored the medium's creative aspects, such as Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston, struggled for recognition and success. That changed decades later when, at long last, the American public accepted photography as an art form. The catalogue for the exhibition "The Light of the Revival: Stained-Glass Designs for Restituted Synagogues in Ukraine by Eugeny Kotlyar" held at Fordham University from September 10-December 10, 2023 offers a broad perspective on the revival of Ukrainian synagogues after Ukraine’s independence. It showcases three sets of stained-glass windows, which were designed by Eugeny Kotlyar and partially implemented in Ukrainian synagogues in the period from 1995 to 2005. Two early works shown here were the first samples of stained-glass designs for modern Ukrainian synagogues, which set a new trend. “A Tyrannical Grace”: Mabel Frazer, The American West, And The Navigation Of A Man’S Space, James R. Swensen

In 1949 the painter Mabel Frazer (1887–1981) applied for, and finally received, promotion to the position of associate professor of art at the University of Utah. Yet, after nearly three decades of diligent service, she witnessed her male peers, often with far fewer bona fides, receive advancement.1 This was the challenge, she acknowledged, of being a “woman in a man’s institution.”2 Throughout her career Frazer repeatedly overcame similar challenges and, by so doing, defied and redefined what it meant to be a female artist in Utah. Devour The Land: War And American Landscape Photography Since 1970, James R. Swensen

At first glance, it is apparent that this is not a typical art book or exhibition catalog. Spiral bound with various, variegated folios and sections, Devour the Land appears to be taken from a restricted archive. Indeed, everything down to the chosen fonts makes it seem as if this was a government record. Yet, it becomes quickly evident that this engaging text is not a report that federal authorities would like to broadcast. By subverting the look of a bureaucratic document, this text penetrates and probes the very system it wants to critique.
