Boundary As Borderland: Mexico City’S Central Plaza And The Politics Of Presence, Re'al Christian Dec 2021

Boundary As Borderland: Mexico City’S Central Plaza And The Politics Of Presence, Re'al Christian

Theses and Dissertations

In the postcolonial era, the land surrounding national borders—the borderland—has inherited a specific identity and relationship with those who navigate it. While national borderlands are oft discussed amid conversations on globalization, land disputes, and war, the Spanish colonization of the Americas in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries saw the new establishment of borderlands from within in the form of segregative boundaries that purported to separate Indigenous and European peoples. This thesis concerns the manifestation of the borderland as not only an external entity, but an internal one as well. Using Mexico City, the center of the Spanish colonial empire, as …

Mosque Architecture And Identity: A Study Of The Autochthonous Mosque In China, Yutong Ma Dec 2021

Mosque Architecture And Identity: A Study Of The Autochthonous Mosque In China, Yutong Ma

Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations

This thesis argues that an autochthonous mosque architecture exists in China, and this historical type adequately serves as a reference for contemporary mosque building in southeastern China in light of how it responded to the Chinese cultural and urban contexts. Many Hui Muslims and architects in this region refuse to consider historical mosque architecture built in traditional Chinese architectural style as their cultural references in constructing new mosques, as they believe that the traditional Chinese architectural language is insufficient to express their identity as Muslims. Instead, they prefer a collection of symbolic architectural elements to be used in mosque architecture …

Life In Between: Prehispanic Settlement Patterns Of The Carabamba Valley, Northern Peru, Amedeo Sghinolfi Dec 2021

Life In Between: Prehispanic Settlement Patterns Of The Carabamba Valley, Northern Peru, Amedeo Sghinolfi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation is an archaeological study of the Carabamba Valley (ca. 150 - 3,500 m.a.s.l.) in Northern Peru, which aims to reconstruct settlement patterns through the longue durée (ca. 1800 B.C. - A.D. 1532). This study also documents the relations occupants of this frontier zone maintained with neighboring polities on the Peruvian North Coast (Virú Valley) and in the Northern Highlands. The valley features the resource-rich ecological niche called chaupiyunga, fed by rainwater that flows towards the Pacific Ocean and by a number of springs, where crops like coca, fruits, and vegetables can be easily grown. The Carabamba Valley also …

"The Christ Chosen Emperor": Representation Of Emperors As Divine Figures In Byzantine Art, Aly Hutchinson Dec 2021

"The Christ Chosen Emperor": Representation Of Emperors As Divine Figures In Byzantine Art, Aly Hutchinson

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

The concept of power has been evident throughout Byzantine culture, whether in its aristocratic and bureaucratic politics, textiles, architecture, or minted coinage. Consequently, the arts were frequently utilized to represent imperial and religious power with various renderings of symbols, colors, and icons. In addition, images portrayed significant visual and spiritual value as the viewers looked to them for knowledge, guidance, and prayer. The ruling emperors were held in high regard, and imperial families were dominant over Byzantine society. The emperor was created in God's image, given the responsibility to rule on earth and carry out the ten commandments. This essay …

Byzantine Textiles: Embroidery, Delphine Dah Dec 2021

Byzantine Textiles: Embroidery, Delphine Dah

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

The textile that I will be discussing is the Embroidered Medallion found in the fifteenth to the sixteenth century Byzantine Empire. This rare example of Byzantine embroidery consists of two medallions, one depicting the eagle of Saint John, the other the angel of Saint Matthew, two of the four evangelists. The original piece is paired with the other medallion, which shows the symbol for Mark and Luke. Since their scale is so small it suggests that they are meant to be attached to an epitrachelion, a stole worn by priests and bishops as a symbol of their priest hood.

The Face Of Power: A Chronological Comparison Of Byzantine Coinage, Emma Duffin Dec 2021

The Face Of Power: A Chronological Comparison Of Byzantine Coinage, Emma Duffin

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

Coinage was an effective tool for representing imperial power in the Byzantine Empire. This short essay focuses on the evolution of power representation in coinage and argues that Byzantine emperors displayed power by employing classical Roman elements in their coinage. This argument is communicated through a chronological comparison of five coins ranging in date from 288 to 1425 C.E. These coins are a small example of the transition from imperial iconography to Christian iconography in which we see how classical forms are preserved even among a drastic change in style and narrative.

The Vienna Genesis And The Evolution Of Christian Book Illumination, Samantha Castro Dec 2021

The Vienna Genesis And The Evolution Of Christian Book Illumination, Samantha Castro

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

In this essay, I argue that the Vienna Genesis influenced future Christian manuscripts by pushing the idea that higher status and holiness were linked. The Vienna Genesis' expensive creation and classically-influenced illustrations, which were seen by some as conspicuous, would be imitated by the Paris Psalter, only differentiating in the subject matter. The Melisende Psalter would take a turn in its style, mimicking Byzantine icons rather than classical works, but it continued the high-cost production and ruler-appealing narrative of King David. And unlike the other two, the Melisende Psalter cements the initial bias, with signs hinting at possible royal/imperial ownership.

Utility, Liturgy, And Luxury, Olivia Brock Dec 2021

Utility, Liturgy, And Luxury, Olivia Brock

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

The material legacy of medieval Byzantium is one of intricate luxury objects made of precious materials. As was evident in many cultures and periods, including the Byzantine, high-quality luxury materials were used to promote the status of individuals and institutions. The Attarouthi Treasure out of the Church of St. Stephen in Syria presents an excellent case study of luxury liturgical objects used to promote the social status of the church, as well as imbed the church in a series of complex social networks that both enhanced and retracted from the church’s social role. These objects were also physically dynamic as …

Case Study Of Byzantium, Shelby Johnson Dec 2021

Case Study Of Byzantium, Shelby Johnson

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

The Byzantine Empire (395-1453 CE) was a large cultural center that included a meshing of different societies in terms of trade. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, the empire had a monopoly of sea trade, leading to their multiple years of success under many different ruling emperors. Many different countries brought with them pieces of their culture and textile materials to the Byzantine Empire.

Around 500 A.D. China was known for their silk making textiles, holding the secret of their creation for many years until a group of traveling monks in Europe were able to smuggle out silkworm eggs from China, …

The Constantine And Zoe Mosaic, Lilly Jones Dec 2021

The Constantine And Zoe Mosaic, Lilly Jones

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

In this case study I will go over the history behind the Constantine and Zoe mosaic in the Hagia Sophia, why it was hidden for so long, and the multiple theories behind its alterations. I will also cover the history of Zoe and her many husbands and why altering the mosaic would have been necessary to show history and they wanted it to be remembered. There is not the same record of events in Byzantium like we have today, history was written by the powerful and important to write to narrative they wanted. Because of the clues left behind we …

Subverting The Selfie: Analysis Of Cindy Sherman’S Instagram Photos And Untitled Film Stills, Katrina M. Russell Dec 2021

Subverting The Selfie: Analysis Of Cindy Sherman’S Instagram Photos And Untitled Film Stills, Katrina M. Russell

Theses and Dissertations

As a prominent artist of self-portraiture, Cindy Sherman has been captivating audiences and scholars for decades. Recently, some media outlets have begun generalizing all of Sherman's work under the selfie concept using her dual role as model and photographer as the defining factor along with her recent activity on Instagram. In this paper, I argue that characterizing all of Sherman's work as selfies is problematic and inaccurate while illustrating similar themes present in her early Untitled Film Stills series and more recent Instagram photos. First, I start by outlining the fundamental criteria for characterizing a photo as a selfie using …

The Interdisciplinary Work Of Senga Nengudi: How Abjection In Art Can Lead To Greater Deai In Exhibition Spaces By Danielle Lynne Paswaters, Danielle Lynne Paswaters Dec 2021

The Interdisciplinary Work Of Senga Nengudi: How Abjection In Art Can Lead To Greater Deai In Exhibition Spaces By Danielle Lynne Paswaters, Danielle Lynne Paswaters

Theses and Dissertations

Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion (DEAI) have become popular topics in today’s increasingly divisive and political climate. This thesis investigates how the abject in art challenges social structures and institutional norms through an analysis of the interdisciplinary work of Senga Nengudi. While this conversation has been started by Leticia Alvarado regarding the work of Ana Mendieta, there is no scholarship on the more specific ways that Nengudi’s work employs the concept of Blackness itself as abject. This gap in literature is not only a disservice to the work of Nengudi, but also to scholars and institutions that aim to understand …

Secular Architecture: Domestic, Carolyn S. Snively Dec 2021

Secular Architecture: Domestic, Carolyn S. Snively

Classics Faculty Publications

The geographic focus of this discussion of Byzantine domestic architecture, from the late fourth to fifteenth centuries, will be on the Balkans and Asia Minor. Although more dwellings exist than any other type of structure within a settlement or outside it, emphasis has often been on large public buildings or the peristyle house rather than the range of housing units and their multifunctional nature. Those who study domestic architecture tend to look at palaces and other grand and richly decorated structures; only recently has attention been paid to lower-class and rural dwellings.

The chances of excavation often dictate our knowledge …

How “Interested” Criticism Fueled The Formulation Of Nineteen Eighty-Four’S Cultural Afterlife, John Cameron Bosch Dec 2021

How “Interested” Criticism Fueled The Formulation Of Nineteen Eighty-Four’S Cultural Afterlife, John Cameron Bosch

All Theses

George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four carries a “cultural afterlife” as a result of “interested” criticism, which has a set political/practical barometer or motive. While everyone agrees that the novel presents a frightening dystopia, many also consider it a prophetic piece that illuminates the possible corruption of executive power of a nation thanks to this cultural afterlife; the modern and popular term “Orwellian” resulted from these sorts of analyses and have only escalated in the years since its inception. As a result, within the past decade, multiple scholars, analysts, and journalists have referenced Orwell’s novel as a factual representation of this executive …

Designing Digital Antiquity: Classical Archaeology In New Virtual Applications, William Loder

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I argue that the combination of existing archaeological theory with game design theory offers an innovative avenue for creating serious 3D applications of archaeological sites in virtual reality that can be productively used for pedagogical, research, and outreach solutions. In this thesis, I engage with the archaeological theories of phenomenology and sensory studies, briefly touching on structure and agency as well as discussion of some current digital applications in use in the field. For this project, I am interested in game design theory as it relates to education and I view Virtual Reality as an important tool …

The Physical And Digital History Of The Ancient Egyptian 18th Dynasty Queen Nefertiti High Hat Bust, Gidgette Ulloa-Torres Dec 2021

The Physical And Digital History Of The Ancient Egyptian 18th Dynasty Queen Nefertiti High Hat Bust, Gidgette Ulloa-Torres

Theses

This paper specifically questions the authenticity of the queen Nefertiti high hat bust currently exhibited at the Berlin Neues Island Museum as a modern fraud. Several factors back up this claim such as the fact that the discoverer, Ludwig Borchart created a carving of plaster of paris that covered the original limestone bust which was made by the royal sculptor, Thutmose. A major point in this composition is the examination of the forty depictions of queen Nefertiti as a black African woman showcasing African facial features. The queen Nefertiti high hat bust at the Neues Berlin Island Museum does not …

The Uncanny Desire In American Animation And Film., Kristen Hankins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although surrealism was short lived, the impact on popular culture is ongoing. Analyzing this impact is quite interesting because it set a standard for American animation and film. In this thesis, Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis and the uncanny are investigated through the lens of the camera in American cinema and animation. This thesis looks at cartoons and films that were made after Breton’s surrealist manifestos were published. This thesis aims to show the viewer the lasting impact that Breton had on American popular culture. This thesis is divided into three chapters with an introduction and conclusion. Chapter one discusses Fleischer …

A Biocultural Analysis Of The Impacts Of Interactions Between West Africans And Europeans During The Trans-Atlantic Trade At Elmina, Ghana, Heidi Ellen Miller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project utilizes a biocultural approach to assess the demographics and health of the West African population from Elmina, Ghana. Elmina, selected by the Portuguese in 1482 as the site of the first European trade fort in sub-Saharan Africa, grew from a small coastal fishing village to a large settlement over the course of more than 400 years of trade and cultural entanglement. Taken over by the Dutch and then ceded to the British, the people of Elmina navigated significant cultural changes, changes and experiences that can be detected in their skeletal remains. Bioarchaeological research concerned with the effects of …

Note On The Restoration Of Five Egyptian Mosques, Monica Hanna Nov 2021

Note On The Restoration Of Five Egyptian Mosques, Monica Hanna

Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists

[En]This paper discusses the cultural loss of five Egyptian mosques in Egypt due to their renovation. While illicit digging, encroachment, and real estate unplanned development has damaged ancient Egyptian heritage, in particular in the last eleven years, Egypt has a long history of faulty restorations of Islamic monuments, which include demolition, wholesome reconstruction, and unhistorical additions. Few of the original early Islamic monuments survive today, the oldest being the Nilometer on Rawḍa Island (AD 869), which dates to two hundred years after the Arab conquest of Egypt. Interventions in the capital Cairo are often subjected to media coverage and …

Constructions With Negative Prefix At- In The Coptic Language, Shaimaa Abdelsttar Ahmed

Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists

( En )The present paper handles the compound noun, the negative, using the formative at, which is used for nouns and verbs because many abstract nouns comprise the prefix at- Finally, all the abstract nouns negated by at are appended to them.
In Coptic, there are few true adjectives because the old form of the language is rich in adjective-verbs. Generally speaking, the adjective is expressed in Coptic by means of a relative clause or by substantives linked together by the genitival adjective n-. Less frequently, the noun and its qualifying substantive are in direct opposition. This adjective follows …

Contributions Of Muslim Mechanical Engineers In Modern Automata (In The Light Of Kitāb Al-Ḥiyal Of Al- Ǧazarī) A Descriptive And Analytical Study, Dr.Boussy Muhammad Zidan

Journal of the General Union of Arab Archaeologists

(En)

Were the Muslims in ancient times highly proficient in mechanical engineering? Did they have a head start over the West in this field? Unfortunately, it is noticeable nowadays that Arabs and Muslims all over the world became just consumers; exploiting all technological developments of the West that are rapidly growing. Here we had to wonder whether the Arab Muslims, long ago, was in this manner. This research hypothesizes that Muslims had attained an advanced level of mechanical engineering and were the inventors of the self-moving artifacts; recently known as automata. Accordingly, this research has undertaken the mission to prove …
